Bayside South's best: These are the top performers, moments from Week 2 of football season

It was an exciting Week 2 of football in the Bayside South, as teams grabbed their first wins of the season and showcased the type of talent fans can expect to see on the field this season.

The Stephen Decatur Seahawks picked up right where they left off last season with a dominant 49-8 home win over Randallstown, while Wi-Hi and Snow Hill gutted out close, tough wins over Easton and Nandua respectively. And the Bennett Clippers grabbed their first win since the 2019 season, going up 32-0 over Washington before the game was called due to weather conditions, and Bennett was declared the winners.

There's plenty to talk about in Week 2, and here were some of the top performers in the second week of Bayside South football:

Snow Hill playmakers lead them to 2-0 start

Snow Hill's Zyheem Collick (8) scores a touchdown against Nandua Friday, Sept. 8, 2023, at Kelly Shumate Stadium in Snow Hill, Maryland. Snow Hill defeated Nandua 26-23.

The Snow Hill Eagles are off to an impressive 2-0 start, beating Annapolis Area Christian on the road in the first game of the season, and following it up with a 26-23 win at home over Nandua.

The Snow Hill defense continued to impress after shutting out Annapolis Christian in Week 1, stifling Nandua for most of the game and continuing to force turnovers. Jayceere Fields grabbed a big interception in the second half, and would go on to score the game winning touchdown late in the game.

Quarterback Tyler Reddick also threw for two touchdowns and broke off a big run for another, while playmaker Zyheem Collick found the end zone as well. Under first-year head coach Raheem Hammond, the Snow Hill Eagles have been one of the Bayside's most impressive teams through two weeks.

Hugee makes huge early impact in Wi-Hi's first win of the season

Wi-Hi's Takai Hugee (1) gets the snap in the game against Linganore Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, in Salisbury, Maryland. Linganore defeated WiHi 40-0 to start the season.
Wi-Hi's Takai Hugee (1) gets the snap in the game against Linganore Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, in Salisbury, Maryland. Linganore defeated WiHi 40-0 to start the season.

Coming off a tough loss to Linganore in Week 1, Wi-Hi's road game against Easton gave them an opportunity to bounce back and get in the win column for the first time this year. And they took advantage of that opportunity, winning 17-3.

They got on the board first with quarterback Takai Hugee showing off his explosive playmaking on the opening kickoff, taking it to the house for seven for Wi-Hi's first points of the season. And then the Wi-Hi defense shut down Easton for the rest of the game, only allowing three points, surely making former defensive coordinator and new head coach Matt McMurdo proud in his first win as head coach. Running back Jordan Hayman would put the game on ice with a rushing touchdown.

Wi-Hi has a tough first five games of the season scheduled, as they travel to face Queen Anne's this week before coming back home to host North Caroline and Kent Island. But if their defense is this dominant, they'll be a tough team to beat once again in the Bayside.

Coleman, Decatur pick up where they left off in opening win

Decatur's Brycen Coleman (9) rushes for a touchdown against Wright in the first round of the 2A East Region playoffs Friday, Nov. 4, 2022, in Berlin, Maryland. The Seahawks defeated the Mustangs 45-13.
Decatur's Brycen Coleman (9) rushes for a touchdown against Wright in the first round of the 2A East Region playoffs Friday, Nov. 4, 2022, in Berlin, Maryland. The Seahawks defeated the Mustangs 45-13.

The Decatur Seahawks had to wait a week to get their football season off the ground after Queen Anne's forfeited their Week 1 matchup. But once they took the field the Seahawks looked like their usual selves in their 49-8 home win over Randallstown, putting points on the board and proving too much for the opposing defense.

With Vanderbilt commit Brycen Coleman under center, the Seahawks spread the ball around to their myraid of weapons, with Coleman making plays with his legs as a runner and in the air as a passer. Newcomer and Seaford transfer Careen Bolden made some eye-popping plays during the Seahawks opening drive, while juniors Ethan Bradshaw, Zakhari Baker and Trybe Wise were each on the receiving ends of passing touchdowns from Coleman.

Tre Dorn and Amarian Manuel each added rushing touchdowns while also making plays on the defensive end, and AJ Kolb made the play of the game for the Seahawks, scoring on a 99-yard interception that he returned for a touchdown. While grabbing the win, Decatur once again looked like a team capable of going on another long playoff run later in the fall.

First win since 2019 for Bennett comes in dominant fashion over Washington

Bennett's Jamareon Stevens (20) rushes for a touchdown against Washington Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023, at Wicomico County Stadium in Salisbury, Maryland. Bennett defeated Washington 32-0.

When the Bennett Clippers and Washington Jaguars faced off at Wicomico County Stadium on Thursday afternoon, whichever team that emerged as winners would be winning their first game in multiple years, as both teams were coming off of consecutive winless seasons. That team would be the Bennett Clippers, as they jumped out to a 32-0 lead before the game was called and they were declared winners due to lightning.

Quarterback Zakai Smullen scored twice on the ground, while also tossing a touchdown to Marcus White, and sophomore running back Jamareon Stevens got on the board with a rushing touchdown of his own.

After putting 74 points on the board combined in their first two games, the offensive potential for the Clippers has been on full display early in the season. Hopefully, this first win provides a boost to a Bennett program that has struggled in recent years..
