Batesville outduels Lady Knights in sectional opener

Jan. 31—AURORA — A pair of EIAC foes tipped off Sectional 29 at South Dearborn with the Lady Bulldogs of Batesville facing the host Lady Knights. A big third quarter for Batesville allowed the Lady Bulldogs to pull away to the 49-25 victory.

With the win, the Lady Bulldogs improve to 15-9 on the season and advance to face Connersville in the 6 p.m. semifinal Friday. South Dearborn ends the year at 3-20.

Batesville led 8-5 after the first eight minutes of action. An identical 8-5 second quarter had the Lady Bulldogs in front 16-10 at the half.

In the third quarter, Batesville outscored the Lady Knights 21-9 to lead 37-19 heading to the fourth quarter. Batesville doubled up South Dearborn in the fourth quarter to seal the sectional opening round win.

Batesville was led in scoring by Sophie Gesell with 18 points. Kaylin Kathmann was also in double figures with 10 points.

Claire Saner and Lydia Haskamp both chipped in with seven points. Liv Maddock added three points. Maddie Haskamp and Sydney Campbell both scored two points.

The sectional semifinal pits Batesville against Connersville (13-9) at 6 p.m. Friday. The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Spartans 45-37 during the regular season.

The winners from Wednesday will square off in the other semifinal.
