Baseball roundup: Davis' heroics gives PORTA extra-inning win; plus other results from May 3-4

Here are local high school baseball results from around the Springfield area for Friday and Saturday, May 3-4:

Saturday's results

PETERSBURG PORTA 5, PAWNEE 4 (8 innings): At Petersburg, with runners at the corners and two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Kendall Davis delivered a walk-off RBI single to left field to give the Bluejays a nonconference win.

With one out in the extra frame, Drew Atwater singled. Two batters later, Trace Donnan hit a two-out single to put runners at the corners ahead of Davis’ heroics.

Atwater, who doubled, and Donnan had three hits apiece for the Bluejays. Donnan pitched the final three innings and didn’t allow a hit or a run. He struck out three and walked one.

Pawnee got all its scoring in the second. Carter Morell sparked the offense with a one-out single before Jacob Butler reached on a bunt single. Griffin Boblitt then connected on an RBI double to give Pawnee a 1-0 lead. One batter later, Ethan Fulton scored Butler with an RBI single. Hunter Barber then singled to load the bases before two scored on Nick Rice’s fielder’s choice-turned error.

WILLIAMSVILLE 6, SOUTHEAST 2: At Eisenhower Park, Ryan Mendenhall went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead the Bullets to a nonconference win.

Williamsville took a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Nathan Simko singled in a run and Mendenhall delivered a two-run double.

Easton Blankenship made it 4-0 with an RBI double in the third and Mendenhall added a run-scoring single in the fifth.

Williamsville pitcher Brecken Thomas got the start and threw four hitless innings, striking out one and walking two. Brayden Saling pitched three innings in relief, striking out four, walking zero and allowing three hits.

Southeast scored a pair of runs in the fifth when Tristan Grant singled in a run and Carter Hood had an RBI groundout off Simko, who had relieved Thomas.  

NEW BERLIN 14, BEARDSTOWN 6: At Beardstown, Rockman Prince and Reid Hepperly each had three hits apiece and Hepperly struck out 11 in a complete-game, nonconference win.

Prince went 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Teammate Lucas Bixby hit a pair of doubles.

Hepperly was 3-for-4 from the No. 8 spot in the lineup with a pair of RBIs. He also drew a walk.

Hepperly allowed six runs — three earned — on eight hits and no walks.

Beardstown’s Trey Riddell and Zach Meyer each had two hits and two RBIs for the Tigers.

HIGHLAND 12, CHATHAM GLENWOOD 10: In Glenwood’s first game on Saturday, a seven-run fifth inning cost Glenwood a chance at a nonconference win in a matchup of a pair of two-time state baseball champions.

Glenwood scored four runs in the top of the third to tie the game 5-5 then added two more in the fourth to take a 7-5 lead. That lasted until Highland sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth and scored seven runs — including a grand slam by Trey Koishor — before Glenwood could record an out.

The Titans responded with three in the sixth and had the tying run on first after Bryce Murphy walked before the Bulldogs got Colten Knoedler and Michael Lucas out to end the threat.

Cam Appenzeller led Glenwood with four RBIs and a double while Cru Erickson went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs.

CHATHAM GLENWOOD 10, TEUTOPOLIS 6: In Glenwood’s second game, Gavin Simmons finished with four RBIs and had a three-hit day in the Titans’ nonconference win.

Simmons was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

Bryce Murphy and Cam Appenzeller also drove in two runs apiece.

SACRED HEART-GRIFFIN 18, LANPHIER 2: At Robin Roberts Stadium, Hunter Wheat drove in three runs without a hit as the Cyclones cruised to a Central State Eight Conference victory.

Tyler Springer hit a pair of solo home runs for SHG. Max Powers walked four times and scored three runs. Rick Meadows, Thomas Lauterbach and Ethan Keller all had two RBIs each.

SHG pitchers Nick Hermes and Rodrigo Morales each threw two innings with four strikeouts apiece.

Lanphier’s Charlie Ramirez drove in both of the Lions’ runs.

ATHENS 14, DECATUR EISENHOWER 2: At Decatur, Cody Tobias and Davis Ishmael had three hits apiece as the Warriors finished with 13 total in a nonconference win.

Tobias and Ishmael scored three runs each and Kyle Weatherford went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs. Winning pitcher Josh Harris threw three innings and allowed two hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts and three walks. Harris also was 2-for-4 with two RBIs at the plate.

Ishmael fanned six, walked none and threw two hitless relief innings.

NOKOMIS 4, AUBURN 3: At Nokomis, pinch-runner Saint Newman scored on a walk-off balk by reliever Evan Kessler with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning as NHS defeated Auburn.

Conner Wilson led off the eighth with a walk and Newman replaced him and stole second. He reached third on a groundout. Nokomis finished with one hit and Wilson got it — a two-run double in Nokomis’ three-run fourth inning. Wilson scored on an Auburn error to tie the game 3-3.

Auburn scored three runs in the first on a Nokomis error, an RBI single by Clayton Dinardo and a balk by pitcher Drake Taylor. Jake Ferguson went 3-for-4 and scored a run for Auburn, which finished with 11 hits and three errors.

NORTH MAC 6, PANA 1: At Virden, Aiden Hatalla was 2-for-2 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored as the Macoupin County Panthers beat the Christian County Panthers in a South Central Conference game.

North Mac scored six runs on just six hits but drew six walks, four batters were plunked and Pana committed one error.

North Mac scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-0 lead.

North Mac pitcher Cade McCready limited Pana’s offense to one run on two hits and five walks in a complete-game outing.

PLEASANT PLAINS 25, EAST ST. LOUIS 0 (4 innings): At Pleasant Plains, the Cardinals scored all 25 runs in the first inning in a lopsided nonconference game.

Owen Johnson and Colton Boon each had three RBIs each for the Cardinals.

EFFINGHAM 16, TAYLORVILLE 4 (6 innings): At Taylorville, Kade Beckmeir went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the Tornadoes’ Apollo Conference doubleheader opener.

Colton Gatton doubled for Taylorville. Baron Odam went 1-for-1 with three walks and two RBIs.

EFFINGHAM 7, TAYLORVILLE 1: At Taylorville, Baron Odam had two of Taylorville’s five hits and drove in the Tornadoes’ lone run in the Apollo Conference doubleheader loss.

Odam was 2-for-4 to finish 3-for-5 on the day.

CUBA/SPOON RIVER VALLEY 4, HAVANA 1: At Cuba, Havana managed just three hits and finished with four errors in the loss.

McGwire Martindale drove in the only run for Havana with an RBI single in the seventh inning. Jaron Boggs finished 2-for-3 for the Ducks.

Friday's results

LITCHFIELD 4, VANDALIA 2: At Vandalia, Mathew Bywater went 4-for-4 from the leadoff spot and accounted for a pair of runs with an RBI and a run scored in the Purple Panthers’ South Central Conference win.

With the win, Litchfield continues to close in on its school record of 25 wins. After Friday’s win, the Panthers are 22-6 overall and 5-2 in the SCC. Litchfield has five games remaining, including the final three on the road.

Ethan Saathoff went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored for Litchfield.

Tate Dobrinich struck out four in his complete-game win. He allowed two runs — none earned — on two hits and three walks.

NOKOMIS 6, RAYMOND LINCOLNWOOD 5: At Nokomis, Brenton Lyons hit a walk-off single to score a pair of runs in Nokomis’ MSM Conference win.

Jonah Elvidge gave Lincolnwood a 5-4 lead on a two-run single in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, Kannon Jonas led off with a single and Ian Keller gave Nokomis runners at first and second when his sacrifice bunt was misplayed. Saint Newman then loaded the bases with an infield single ahead of Lyons’ two-run line drive to center field.

Newman had three of his team’s seven hits, including a double. Lyons was the only other Nokomis player with a multi-hit effort.

Keller struck out 11 in five innings pitched. He gave up five runs — two earned — on seven hits and four walks. Levi German got the win with two shutout innings pitched. He struck out one, walked two and didn’t allow a hit.

Elvidge and Brody Lush each had a pair of hits for the Lancers.

NEW BERLIN 3, ATHENS 1: At Athens, starting pitcher Lucas Bixby fanned 12 batters in six strong innings as the Pretzels won a Sangamo Conference game.

Bixby limited Athens to two hits and allowed one earned run and two walks. Reid Hepperly yielded two hits, striking out one in his one inning of work to close out the game.

New Berlin went ahead 1-0 on an RBI single by Trevor Colwell in the fourth. Wesley Preckwinkle increased the Pretzels’ lead to 3-0 with a two-run double in the sixth.

Wyatt Gleason drove in the only run for Athens with a run-scoring single with two outs in the seventh.

JACKSONVILLE ROUTT 7, PLEASANT PLAINS 0: At Pleasant Plains, pitchers Jace Lautemann, Conrad Charpentier and Eli Olson combined on a three-hit shutout in a nonconference win.

Lautemann earned the win and he and Charpentier threw three innings each. Olson tossed one inning and the Routt trio combined for two strikeouts and one walk.

Routt scored a run each in the third and fourth innings and put the game away with five runs in the seventh. Nolan Turner doubled twice and scored two runs and Dalton Brown went 3-for-4 and finished with two RBIs. Charpentier ended with three RBIs without a hit.

GILLESPIE 6, HILLSBORO 0: At Gillespie, Luke Schuckenbrock hit a two-run single as the Hiltoppers cemented their South Central Conference win with a four-run sixth inning.

Gillespie led 3-0 with runners at second and third when Schuckenbrock hit a line drive to left field, allowing Carson Hailstone and Tristen Wargo to score. Two batters later, Jesse Berry’s single put Gillespie up 6-0.

Schuckenbrock finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs and Wargo was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Schuckenbrock also struck out six in a complete-game shutout. He allowed four hits and two walks and needed just 75 pitches to finish the outing.

Gillespie improved to 21-7 (overall, 7-1 SCC). Hillsboro fell to 5-20 (1-5).

CLINTON 4, LINCOLN 1: At Lincoln, Colbie Glenn doubled, had two of the Railsplitters’ five hits and pitched six innings of relief in Lincoln’s nonconference loss.
