Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

May 2 (The Sports Xchange) - General manager Brian Cashman of the New York Yankees said Saturday the team will not pay Alex Rodriguez a $6-million bonus for hitting his historic 660th home run. "We have the right, but not the obligation to do something, and that's it," Cashman said before Saturday's Yankees-Red Sox game at Fenway Park. "We're going to follow the contract as we follow all contracts, so there is no dispute, from our perspective." The Yankees' interpretation of the contract is that the organization is under no obligation to pay off on a deal it feels is no longer valid due to Rodriguez's 162-game suspension last year for performance-enhancing drug use. According to multiple reports, the deal was drawn up as an addendum to the 10-year, $275 million contract Rodriguez signed with the Yankees after opting out of his previous contract in 2007. The deal would call for five payments of $6 million for reaching home run milestones. Rodriguez, who turns 40 in July, also would pocket $6 million apiece if he tied Babe Ruth (714 home runs), Hank Aaron (755), Barry Bonds (762) and topped Bonds' record. Rodriguez reached the first milestone with his pinch-hit home run in the eighth inning of Friday night's 3-2 win over the Red Sox. - - - Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig, on the 15-day disabled list, will play some games on a minor league rehab assignment next week. Puig was placed on the disabled list April 25 for a strained left hamstring. He is eligible to be activated May 10, the last day of next week's seven-game trip. Manager Don Mattingly said Puig will not go to the first city on the trip, Milwaukee, but he could be activated for the final game in Colorado. - - - The Milwaukee Brewers activated outfielder Carlos Gomez from the 15-day disabled list prior to Saturday game against the Chicago Cubs. Gomez, a two-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner, has been sidelined since April 15 with a hamstring strain, missing 15 games. - - - Boston catcher Ryan Hanigan was placed on the 15-day disabled list after breaking his right hand late in Friday night's game.
