Bartlesville-area fall sports report: Teams finish week on winning notes

Following is a look at recent Bartlesville-area high school and college girls sports action from Aug. 8-18.

BARTLESVILLE SOFTBALL

After a rugged start — falling to a 1-8 record in the first 10 days of the season — the Lady Bruins needed a turnaround in the worst way.

As it turned out, they did it in the best way.

On Saturday, Bartlesville knocked off Broken Arrow, 6-3 — the Lady Bruins’ first win in almost a decade against the Lady Tigers.

Bartlesville (3-8) also hammered Tahlequah, 9-2, on Saturday.

“We got together in the morning with the kids and told them, ‘You’re not playing well. You guys have got to get together and decide what you want to do,’” Bartlesville skipper Kyle Minton said.

The Lady Bruins answered with the two signature victories.

Saturday: BHS 8, Broken Arrow 6: In what was their biggest win in the first 10 games, the Lady Bruins needed only five hits, including a double by Lexi Durao. Lola Redington drove in two runs — without a base hit. Chloe Robbins, Allie Scullawl, Chelsea Goddard, Kenzie Denny and Isabell Daniels drove in one run apiece. Parker Fielder contributed two stolen bases. Durao pitched the distance, overcoming 11 hits to earn the win. Redington — a freshman who was awarded her first two starts Saturday — delivered the go-ahead hit.

Saturday: BHS 9, Tahlequah 2: Savannah Alden, Emerson Casey, Fielder and Goddard each nailed a double. Scullawl and Fielder drove in three and two runs, respectively. Alison Rosson drew the rare start and answered masterfully, allowing only one hit and two runs in four innings. Yales finished up by striking out the side in the final frame.

Bartlesville teams split: Lady Bruin teams forged a split against the powerful Broken Arrow program in a pair of contests in Bartlesville. In the varsity game, The Lady generated singles by Durao, Fielder and Mady Nachbor. Bartlesville won the jayvee game, 8-5, sparked by Alden’s homer and Redington’s two-RBI production. Rosson pitched.

DEWEY SOFTBALL

The Lady Doggers are off to a start worthy of a team battling to return to state.

They improved to 8-3 following three straight wins to end the week: 6-0 vs. Collinsville, 16-4 vs. Caney Valley and 6-0 vs. Berryhill.

Dewey, which is coached by Niki Keck, has been to state three of the past four seasons.

Dewey will be home at 5 p.m. Monday to host Lincoln Christian.

DHS 16, Caney Valley 4: Reagan White pitched the distance to collect the win Friday. Ripping two hits each were Maycee Smith, Kirsten Kay and Kyla Overton. Londyn Bond clobbered a solo homer and Israel Olson produced a double in the bottom part of the lineup to help fuel the attack. Chanley Herren added three stolen bases.

Dewey 6, Berryhill 0: Overton starred in the pitching circle, snapping off a two-hitter while walking two and whiffing 10 on Saturday. Smith and Olson both lashed two hits and Shatanna Sutton sparked the attack. Dewey led only 1-0 through six innings. Kay drove home Smith for Dewey’s first run.

Following are other games during the past several days.

Wagoner 2, DHS 0 -- White hurled the first four innings for Dewey; Overton finished up the final two frames.

Broken Arrow tourney -- Dewey knocked off Edmond North, 3-1, Putnam City North, 4-0, and Muldrow, 10-0. Against Edmond North, Overton struck out two batters to help preserve the victory.

BARTLESVILLE VOLLEYBALL

Bartlesville finished off the week with a rousing performance, despite a scary moment for one of its key players.

That occurred when leading hitter Emry Brown and second-leading hitter Kelsey Ward collided during a Friday match at the Regent Prep tourney. Brown didn’t play the rest of Friday, but returned Saturday to help Bartlesville record a winning tourney record.

“Our setting was so much better to the middles,” said Bartlesville head coach Jen Ward. “Our setting is so much better than it was last year at this time.”

Hayden Brandon and Emma Parsley split Bartlesville’s setter duties. Brandon also contributed 10 aces.

Regent tourney: Ward, a fourth-year starting senior, spearheaded the Lady Bruins’ smash attack with 73 kills on the weekend, followed by Brown with 50 and Marissa Demuth in a break-out weekend with 45. That meant Bartlesville three most-potent hammerin’ hitters combined for 168 kills. Demuth also register a single-game career best (11 kills vs. Ponca City). Rye Christenson pounded seven kills vs. Catoosa and finished with an impressive 32 kills, increased the total to 200 kills for Bartlesville top four spikers. Mariel Bussey added a key 18 kills. Bartlesville defeated Ponca City, Moore, Catoosa and Collinsville in the tourney. “All in all, I was really pleased with the weekend,” coach Ward said.

Following is another recent matches.

BHS sweeps Sand Springs and Enid: Brown and Ward slammed 27 and 20 kills, respectively. Demuth added 12 kills (10 against Enid) and Christenson belted 10. Ward swatted seven service aces, followed by Brown (six) and Brandon (three).

COPAN SOFTBALL

Lady Hornets veteran coach Randy Davis couldn't have ended the week on a happier note.

For the first time since he could remember his team won its own tourney, bolting unbeaten (4-0) during the sun-blazing Friday and Saturday ordeal.

Copan improved to 5-1 on the season with the shining effort.

Copan tourney: The Lady Hornets beat Bluejacket, 13-0; Nowata, 12-5; Foyil, 13-12; and South Coffeyville, 4-1. Veteran pitcher Kam Van earned the winning decision in all four games, with Zoey Secondine as her catcher. Amaya Barnes earned the save against Foyil. In the final against South Coffeyville, an overthrow in the first inning resulted in a South Coffeyville run. In the second inning, Myah Call scored the tying run on a pickoff play and error. Elizabeth Odum belted a two-run single in the third inning. Amy Nittler scored the final tally. In the thriller against Foyil, Copan rallied from an 8-4 deficit. Odum and Secondine spearheaded the offense.

Copan 17, Bluejacket 3: Copan batters drew 12 walks to carry the team to a home victory. Odum snapped off a triple and two singles and drove in three runs. Van twirled a five-hitter with three K's.
