Barberton, Hoban, STVM, Springfield set to host weekend basketball events

High school basketball fans have several options this weekend with 30 varsity games at four events in Summit County.

Barberton is hosting the K. Jack Greynolds Memorial Classic on Saturday and St. Vincent-St. Mary is hosting the Holy Grounds Showcase on Saturday.

Archbishop Hoban and Springfield are hosting games on Saturday and Sunday at the the Hoban Hoopfest and the Spartan Holiday Boys Basketball Showcase, respectively.

Here are details about each event at a glance:

K. Jack Greynolds Memorial Classic at Barberton

This will be the 18th year for the Classic that honors legendary Barberton boys basketball coach Jack Greynolds, who died in 2005.

Proceeds from the event go the the Lake Anna YMCA, Magic City Kiwanis, the Barberton Public Schools and the Larry Bidlingmyer Outdoor Education Fund for youth programs and equipment as well as stroke awareness education.

The Greynolds Classic has raised over $250,000 over the past 17 years, Barberton Athletic Director John Sabol said.

This year's event starts at 12:15 p.m. with a girls basketball game between Springfield and Barberton on Greynolds Floor. Four boys basketball games follow with Cuyahoga Heights versus Chippewa at 2 p.m., Norwayne against Ellet at 3:30 p.m., Firestone versus Hoban at 5 p.m. and Barberton against Rootstown at 6:30 p.m.

Hoban is the reigning Division I boys basketball state champion.

Greynolds coached 12 years at Revere and 18 years at Barberton. He compiled a 549-121 overall record (343-61 at Barberton) and never had a losing season.

Greynolds guided Barberton to the 1976 Class AAA state championship with a 26-0 record. The Magics were Class AAA state runners-up in 1977 (25-1) and in 1982 (22-6).

Greynolds’ teams also won 17 sectional titles, six district titles and three regional titles.

Holy Grounds Showcase at St. Vincent-St. Mary

The Holy Grounds Showcase is scheduled to feature four varsity boys basketball games at LeBron James Arena. The event starts at noon with a junior varsity game between STVM and Cincinnati Moeller.

The rest of the schedule pits STVM against Moeller at 1:45 p.m., Brush versus CVCA at 3:30 p.m., Lutheran West against Frederick Douglass (Atlanta, Georgia) at 5:15 pm. and Lutheran East versus Holy Name at 7 p.m.

Lutheran West finished as the Division II state runner-up to Buchtel last season and Lutheran East is the defending Division III state champion.

Hoban Hoopfest

Hoban is hosting 13 varsity girls basketball games this weekend, eight on Saturday and five on Sunday.

Saturday's schedule:

  • Field vs. Massillon, 9 a.m.

  • Waynedale vs. Laurel, 10:30 a.m.

  • St. Joseph Academy vs. Chagrin Falls, noon

  • Thomas Worthington vs. Lutheran West, 1:30 p.m.

  • Harvest Prep vs. Blackhawk (Pennsylvania), 3 p.m.

  • Bolingbrook (Illinois) vs. Cathedral Prep (Pennsylvania), 4:30 p.m.

  • Toledo Central Catholic vs. North Allegheny (Pennsylvania), 6 p.m.

  • Hoban vs. Gilmour Academy, 7:30 p.m.

  • Laurel vs. Bolingbrook (Illinois), 1 p.m.

  • North Allegheny (Pennsylvania) vs. Stow, 2:30 p.m.

  • Conotton Valley vs. Rittman, 4 p.m.

  • Hoban vs. Toledo Central Catholic, 5:30 p.m.

Spartan Holiday Boys Basketball Showcase at Springfield

Springfield is hosting eight varsity boys basketball games this weekend, five on Saturday and three on Sunday.

Saturday's schedule:

  • Southeast vs. East Canton, 1 p.m.

  • Coventry vs. Medina Christian Academy, 2:30 p.m.

  • Reimer Road Baptist vs. Cloverleaf, 4 p.m.

  • Streetsboro vs. Nordonia, 5:30 p.m.

  • Kent Roosevelt vs. Louisville, 7 p.m.
