Baker Mayfield, wife Emily expecting their first baby
TAMPA — Baker Mayfield thought his wife was going to surprise him with a new puppy and instead landed in the doghouse.
After returning from training camp during the summer, the Bucs quarterback thought he might receive a Goldendoodle after sending his wife a picture of one.
“I was in shock, to be honest with you,” Mayfield said of the news that he and wife Emily are expecting a baby girl in April. “I had sent her a picture outside of our hotel, there was a Goldendoodle puppy sign with the number on it and I sent her a screen shot of that.
“And two days later, I go to the house and she puts a Big Brother shirt on our dog. So I start looking around for a puppy, not seeing the ultrasound and all the different pregnancy tests right in front of me.”
What was Mayfield’s reaction to becoming a father?
“Just a complete shock, but so blessed, honestly,” Mayfield said. “There’s much more to life than just football, so it’s one of those things that we’re extremely happy about.”
Mayfield said he expects to be spoiling his daughter very soon.
“I know. Girl dad!” he said. “She’ll have me wrapped around here finger. I’m completely screwed.”
How long was Mayfield in the doghouse?
“Not long, I got out quickly. I got over the no puppy thing pretty quickly. Reality set in.”
