Auburn softball lands at No. 19 in preseason USA TODAY/NFCA Coaches Poll
The Auburn softball team returns to the diamond in just over one week when they host the Virginia Tech Hokies in the front end of a Friday doubleheader at Jane B. Moore Field.
Expectations will be sky-high for the Tigers as they come in ranked No. 19 in the final USA TODAY NFCA Coaches Poll before the season gets underway. The No. 19 ranking is fifth best in the Southeastern Conference trailing Tennessee (No. 3), Alabama (No. 7), LSU (No. 16), and Arkansas (No. 17).
Future SEC teams Oklahoma (No. 1) and Texas (No. 11) are also ranked above the Tigers, for what it’s worth.
Even with Auburn’s middle-of-the-pack ranking, the Tigers could very well find themselves fighting for an SEC Championship with star pitcher and SEC Player of the Year contender maddie penta leading a tremendously talented roster.
Penta and company will have just under a month’s worth of non-conference games before opening the SEC schedule against Missouri on March 8. Only time will tell how the Tigers rank nationally heading into the most grueling stretch of the season in college softball.
