Auburn football flips 5-star receiver Perry Thompson away from Alabama at Big Cat Weekend

AUBURN — Auburn football just took a coveted in-state recruit from Alabama.

Five-star wide receiver Perry Thompson, from Foley High School, has flipped his commitment from Coach Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide to Coach Hugh Freeze's Tigers. Thompson announced his decision Saturday during Big Cat Weekend, Auburn's premier recruiting event of the summer first started by former coach Gene Chizik in 2009.

The 6-foot-3, 202-pound Thompson, who is rated by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 32 player in the Class of 2024 and the eighth-best receiver, had been committed to Alabama since June 2022.

Thompson is also ranked as the No. 4 player in the state. On Wednesday, Auburn received a commitment from five-star linebacker Demarcus Riddick out of Chilton County High School in Tuskegee; Riddick is tabbed as the No. 3 senior recruit in Alabama.

Prior to Riddick's pledge, the Tigers had not received a commitment from a five-star recruit since 2019.

Auburn now has 14 players in the Class of 2024, as Thompson joins a list that includes Riddick, four-star quarterback Walker White, four-star edge Joseph Phillips, four-star running back J'Marion Burnette, four-star defensive lineman Malik Blocton, four-star receivers Bryce Cain and Malcolm Simmons, four-star defensive backs Jalyn Crawford, A'Mon Lane, Jayden Lewis and Kensley Faustin, three-star linebacker D'Angelo Barber and three-star athlete Martavious Collins.
