Atlanta Hawks waive former Tech guard Jarrett Culver

Former Coronado and Texas Tech basketball player Jarrett Culver was waived on Saturday by the Atlanta Hawks, with whom he'd played in 10 games this season.

The 6-foot-6 guard was averaging 4.4 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. The Hawks signed Culver on Sept. 12 to a two-way contract between the NBA team and its G League affiliate, the College Park (Ga.) Skyhawks.

Culver was the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft. In four seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves (2019-21), Memphis Grizzlies (2021-22) and the Hawks, Culver has averaged 6.5 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game.

Tech men's tennis

Texas Tech picked up its first victory of the season Sunday, beating Louisiana-Lafayette 6-1 at The Falls Tennis & Athletic Club.

Tech (1-2) took the best-of-three doubles point with victories from the teams of Dimitrios Azoidis-Reed Collier and Piotr Pawlak-Franco Ribero.

Olle Wallin, Collier and Ribero then won the top three singles positions, and Tyler Stewart and Lorenzo Esquici won at Nos. 4 and 6 singles, respectively.

Louisiana-Lafayette is 0-1.

SPC basketball

South Plains College hosts Frank Phillips College in a women's/men's doubleheader Monday in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference.

The Lady Texans (7-7, 1-0) and the Lady Plainsmen (9-8, 0-1) square off at 5:45 p.m. at Texan Dome in Levelland. The 10th-ranked Texans (13-3, 1-1) and the Plainsmen (9-6, 1-1) follow at 7:30 p.m.

The SPC women opened conference play Thursday with a 58-47 victory against Howard College in Big Spring. Sophomore forward Celia Sumbane leads the Lady Texans, averaging 13.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.

Frank Phillips dropped its WJCAC opener 84-51 at Midland College. Freshman guards Xoe Rosalez (17.3 ppg) from Seminole and Teresa Mbemba (14.6 ppg) lead the Lady Plainsmen.

The South Plains men have won 12 of their past 14 games, but lost their conference opener Thursday at Howard 87-82. Four Texans are averaging in double digits: 6-9 sophomore Christian Coleman (16.8 ppg, 8.8 rpg), 6-4 sophomore Jaden Harris (13.5 ppg), 6-foot freshman Ismail Habib (12.9 ppg) and 6-4 sophomore Elijah Tate (10.8 ppg).

Frank Phillips' leaders are 6-9 freshman Chris Mpaka (14.5 ppg, 6.6 rpg), 6-5 freshman Ibrahim Zahran (11.6 ppg, 4.4 rpg) and 6-3 freshman Fabio Dias (11.4 ppg).
