ASU football beats UCLA in Pac-12 Conference stunner in Pasadena

The ASU football team was a 17-point underdog against UCLA.

It was coming off a 55-3 loss to Utah, one of its worst losses ever and it had managed just 83 yards in that game, the second fewest it had ever gained in a game.

And the Sun Devils were missing several key contributors to injury.

They still found a way to beat the Bruins at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, thanks to a couple of long touchdown drives and to a strong defensive effort.

ASU's defense stopped UCLA on all four of its fourth-down conversion attempts, three of which came deep in ASU territory.

UCLA also went just 3-for-11 on third down.

And this was a week after ASU allowed Utah to score 55 points.

ASU's Cameron Skattebo had a 25-yard touchdown pass to Elijhah Badger on ASU's first touchdown drive of the game in the third quarter.

He then had a 17-yard rush lock up the win with 3:07 remaining in the game.

ASU's touchdown drives were for 12 plays and 75 yards over 6:40 and then 14 plays and 99 yards over 7:11.

ASU kept UCLA's offense off the field, winning the time of possession battle, 36:54 to 23:06.

UCLA outgained ASU, 300-250 and 183-74 on the ground, but the Sun Devils made the plays when they needed them most.

Badger finished with 12 catches for 116 yards and the touchdown.

Skattebo rushed 12 times for 61 yards and the touchdown.

Trenton Bouguet went 19-for-34 for 149 yards with one interception for ASU passing.

Collin Schlee was 11-for-18 for 117 yards and a touchdown for UCLA, which pulled within 10-7 with 9:47 left in the game before ASU responded with its monster second touchdown drive.

ASU (3-7 overall, 2-5 Pac-12) hosts Oregon next week.

UCLA (6-4, 3-4) plays at USC.

Final score: ASU 17, UCLA 7

ASU defense gets another UCLA turnover on downs, runs out clock

UCLA just turned the ball over on downs for the fourth time of the game as ASU once again stopped UCLA.

The Sun Devils then ran out the clock to secure a 17-7 win over the Bruins in a stunner in Pasadena.

ASU had been a 17-point underdog entering the game.

Score: ASU 17, UCLA 7 (final)

ASU football responds, extends lead vs. UCLA

The Sun Devils are up by 10 again at UCLA.

Cameron Skattebo just ran for a 17-yard touchdown with 3:07 left in the game to give ASU a 17-7 advantage at the Rose Bowl.

The run topped off a 12-play, 75-yard drive that took 6:40 off the clock.

UCLA helped ASU on the drive.

A 15-yard personal foul on UCLA's Gabriel Murphy after ASU failed to convert a 3rd & 14 at ASU's 32 yard line allowed the Sun Devils' drive to continue.

Then UCLA's Devin Kirkwood was called for pass interference on Elijhah Badger on a 3rd & 1 at the UCLA 46, giving ASU another set of downs.

ASU converted a huge 4th and 4 at the UCLA 24 on the drive when Trenton Bourguet connected on a 7-yard pass to Elijhah Badger.

Score: ASU 17, UCLA 7 (3:07 left in fourth quarter)

UCLA closes gap vs. Arizona State with touchdown

This game just got a lot more interesting.

UCLA just drove 59 yards in 1:58, taking six plays to get on the board and pull within 10-7.

Collin Schlee hit Logan Loya from 16-yards out for the score. It is Schlee's first touchdown pass for the Bruins.

Schlee is 11-for-17 for 117 yards and the touchdown. He has also rushed 13 times for 51 yards.

There is a lot of game left, with 9:47 remaining in the fourth quarter at the Rose Bowl, making this next possession a critical one for Arizona State.

Score: ASU 10, UCLA 7 (9:47 left in fourth quarter)

Sun Devils punt ball back to Bruins

Well, that was interesting. The Sun Devils just punted the ball back to UCLA after going 3-and-out, but they picked up three false start penalties and one delay of game penalty before punting the ball back to the Bruins.

ASU managed to take 1:37 off the clock between its third down play and the punt.

UCLA will begin its next possession at its own 41.

This game has seen its share of penalties. ASU has seven for 46 yards. UCLA has seven for 55 yards.

ASU stops UCLA on fourth down again

The UCLA Bruins are now 0-for-3 on fourth downs in this game after ASU thwarted UCLA on 4th & 2 at the ASU 37.

UCLA's drive went for 40 yards over six plays.

Carson Steele only gained one yard on UCLA's latest fourth down try.

Third quarter numbers for ASU vs. UCLA

We're three quarters of the way through this game and here are some notable numbers, the most important being the ones on the scoreboard: ASU 10, UCLA 0.

UCLA has a 236-234 advantage in total yards in this game and a 163-72 lead in rushing yards.

ASU has a 162-77 advantage in passing yards.

ASU football extends lead vs. UCLA with first touchdown of game

The ASU Sun Devils, who have struggled to move the ball all night, just went 99 yards on 14 plays over 7:11 to take a 10-0 lead on UCLA at the Rose Bowl.

And they scored the touchdown on a 25-yard pass from running back Cameron Skattebo to Elijhah Badger.

Badger is having a big games for ASU, despite the Sun Devils' offensive woes, with 10 catches for 105 yards and the touchdown.

ASU will take it, especially after only putting up three points last week against Utah.

Score: ASU 10, UCLA 0 (1:59 left in third quarter)

UCLA punts again against ASU

This game is definitely not exciting from a scoreboard point of view and the second half isn't really helping.

The Bruins had to punt after a five-play 15-yard drive on their second possession of the second half.

Hey, they at least got a first down. Will Powers had a 49-yard punt to pin ASU at its own 1-yard line.

ASU forced to punt against UCLA to open second half

Like ASU on the previous drive, UCLA got a big third down sack on the Sun Devils, forcing Arizona State to punt on its first possession of the second half.

ASU interestingly had tight end Jalin Conyers play quarterback for the entire possession after playing there occasionally in the first half.

It didn't work out as the Sun Devils had to punt after three plays on the drive.

Sun Devils force a Bruins punt to open second half

UCLA went 3-and-out on its first possession of the second half, gaining just two yards on the drive.

ASU picked up another sack of Schlee on third down, bringing a lot of pressure on the QB like it has down at opportunistic times all night.

Can the Sun Devils' offense get something going to extend their lead?

First-half stats for ASU vs. UCLA game

It was not a pretty first half of football in Pasadena.

Both ASU and UCLA have eight first downs.

ASU has 137 total yards. UCLA has 169.

ASU has 94 yards passing. UCLA has 56.

Arizona State shuts out UCLA in first half

The ASU defense gave up 55 points on the road against Utah last week.

It gave up zero points in the first two quarters against UCLA at the Rose Bowl on Saturday.

That will do.

The Sun Devils' defense has come up with big play after big play in the first half, and big stop after big stop, to keep the Bruins off the scoreboard.

ASU has only been able to get a field goal in this game, but it has a 3-0 lead at the half in Pasedena.

Score: ASU 3, UCLA 0 (halftime)

ASU defense comes up big again to stop UCLA

ASU's defense has done it again.

UCLA just turned the ball over on downs for the second time deep in ASU territory, failing to pick up a yard on 2nd & 1, 3rd & 1 and 4th & 1 runs and giving ASU the ball back at the Sun Devils' own 9-yard line with 2:12 left in the first half.

The Sun Devils' defense is playing hard. You have to give them credit. You have to wonder if UCLA would have been better served kicking field goals on its past two possessions.

UCLA in great position against Arizona State

So much for momentum for ASU.

ASU went 3-and-out pinned deep in their own territory, and UCLA returned a Josh Carlson punt to the ASU 18-yard line to give the Bruins a great chance to get on the scoreboard late in the first half.

Trenton Bourguet had three straight incompletions on the drive.

ASU stops UCLA drive on downs

UCLA just had a 1st & goal at the ASU 5.

They ran the ball four straight times and didn't get into the end zone, turning the ball over on downs after eight plays and 74 yards.

That's a nice stand by ASU's defense.

UCLA has rushed the ball 20 times for 122 yards, but has yet to find the end zone.

That will help the Sun Devils build some confidence, and perhaps some momentum.

ASU's drive stalled after a 1st & 10 at the UCLA 16, but they did get on the board.

The field goal was set up by a great catch and run by Elijhah Badger, who caught a short pass from Trenton Bourguet on 3rd & 5 at the UCLA 46 and was able to break several tackles on his way to a 30-yard gain.

Score: ASU 3, UCLA 0 (7:54 left in second quarter)

Promising UCLA drive ends with fumble vs. ASU

It was UCLA's turn to turn the ball over to end a promising drive.

The Bruins had marched eight plays and 58 yards down the field, but Anthony Adkins fumbled the ball on second and 6 at the ASU 26, giving the ball back to the Sun Devils.

Caleb McCullough forced the fumble for ASU and Shamari Simmons recovered it.

ASU has 56 total yards in this game. UCLA has 52.

ASU has five first downs. UCLA has three.

ASU has 31 yards passing, UCLA has four.

ASU has 25 yards rushing, UCLA has 48.

ASU has a 9:08 to 4:37 advantage in time of possession.

Score: ASU 0, UCLA 0 (end of first quarter)

Promising ASU drive ends with interception vs. UCLA

ASU's second drive of the game was much better than its first as the Sun Devils went 43 yards over 10 plays and 6:17.

But Trenton Bourguet threw an interception in the end zone on 2nd & 13 at the UCLA 27 to end Arizona State's drive.

There were no ASU receivers in the vicinity of the throw and UCLA's Kenny Churchwell III as able to make a diving catch for the interception.

ASU is utilizing a lot of different formations on offense in this game and RB Cameron Skattebo and TE Jalin Conyers have also taken snaps under center.

Collin Schlee gets start at QB for UCLA vs. Arizona State

The Bruins started Collin Schlee at quarterback against the Sun Devils, who was just 3-for-13 passing entering this game this season for UCLA, but had 247 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 21 carries.

ASU got a huge sack from Elijah O'Neal on Schlee for a 17-yard loss on 3rd & 4 at ASU's 46 to force the Bruins to punt after an 8-play, 16-drive drive.

Schlee was 1-for-1 passing for four yards on the drive.

Trenton Bourguet back at quarterback for ASU vs. UCLA

Trenton Bourguet was hurt on ASU's first possession against Utah last week.

The QB later came back in for one possession, but was pulled in the Utes' rout over the Sun Devils.

He's back out there for the start of Arizona State's game against UCLA at the Rose Bowl tonight.

ASU had a 56-yard completion from Bourguet to Troy Omeire wiped out on ASU's opening drive because of an illegal formation call and was forced to punt after a 5-play, 18-yard drive.

Bourguet was 2-for-4 for seven yards on the first possession for the Sun Devils.
