Asdrúbal Cabrera suspended four games after throwing batting gloves at umpire

The battle between Major League Baseball players and umpires took another turn Friday, as Texas Rangers infielder Asdrúbal Cabrera was suspended four games by MLB after he threw his batting gloves from the dugout at umpire Bill Miller. It happened Wednesday after Cabrera was arguing a called strike.

Here’s MLB’s announcement:

Texas Rangers third baseman Asdrúbal Cabrera has received a four-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for throwing equipment from the dugout at Major League Umpire Bill Miller during the bottom of the sixth inning of Wednesday’s game vs. the Cleveland Indians at Globe Life Park in Arlington. Joe Torre, Chief Baseball Officer for Major League Baseball, made the announcement.

Unless appealed, Cabrera’s suspension is scheduled to begin tonight, when the Rangers are to host the Chicago White Sox. If Cabrera elects to appeal, then the suspension will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.

We don’t know yet whether Cabrera will appeal, but he can continue to play if he chooses to. Interestingly, this is a much longer suspension than what Manny Machado received earlier in the week from MLB after his confrontation with an umpire. Machado was suspended one game for “aggressive arguing” after throwing his bat.

The MLB Umpires Association issued a harshly worded statement after Machado’s suspension calling for greater punishments for players who go after umpires. They were roasted for it on social media, but perhaps it worked.
