Arsenal vs West Ham United

22:17

Arsenal miss the chance to return to the Premier League summit after West Ham complete a perfect smash-and-grab performance to win 2-0 at their London rivals at Emirates Stadium. Soucek opened the scoring after just 13 minutes in controversial circumstances as the VAR and referee Oliver concluded Bowen had kept the ball in play when setting up his midfield team-mate. A similar decision to one that the Gunners suffered at Newcastle earlier in the season did not dampen the spirit of the hosts, who went close again through Saka when the winger hit the post before the break. However, Jesus missed two good chances in the second half before Mavropanos headed in against his former side, extending the lead for Moyes’ men to 2-0. Benrahma still saw a 96th-minute penalty saved by Raya, though that will matter for little as West Ham jump up to sixth in the league, while Arteta’s side remain two points behind top-flight leaders Liverpool. Arsenal cap off 2023 away at Fulham on Sunday, with West Ham next in action at home to Brighton on Tuesday. Until next time, it is goodbye for now! Thanks for following.

FULL-TIME: ARSENAL 0-2 WEST HAM

Arsenal vs West Ham United

22:14

RAYA SAVES THE PENALTY! Benrahma, oh no. The West Ham winger steps up to the spot-kick after Rice's foul on Emerson, angling a right-footed strike towards the bottom-right corner. Raya guesses the right way and parries away a smart save, keeping his side two goals behind. That will not matter, though, as it is full-time at the Emirates.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

22:13

PENALTY TO WEST HAM! As if it can get any worse against his former side, Rice lunges in with an ill-timed sliding challenge and fells Emerson inside the Arsenal area after Bowen's throughball leaked into open space. Referee Oliver immediately points to the spot and West Ham could make it 3-0!

Arsenal vs West Ham United

22:12

The West Ham supporters are suggesting former Hammer Rice should have signed for a bigger club than Arsenal. The tongue-in-cheek remark will add insult to injury for Arteta's side, who are heading towards their first home defeat of the season.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

22:10

Back-to-back Odegaard corners from the right-hand side come to nothing as West Ham stand firm to head clear, with Ward-Prowse the unlikely first line of defence. Saka then offloads inside the area for Nketiah but the Hammers defend once more with a wall of bodies in front of Areola's goal.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

22:09

In the midst of the Odegaard chance and Nelson miss, Jesus is shown a yellow card for an off-the-ball incident, which seems to be dissent towards referee Oliver. The Arsenal striker is letting his feelings get the better of him, having also wasted two good chances earlier in this half.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

22:09

The fourth official indicates a minimum of five additional minutes as Nelson curls a woeful effort well wide of the target.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

22:08

GREAT STOP! Gabriel plays a free-kick quickly to Rice before Arsenal work it inside from the right flank. Odegaard sprays a left-footed long-range strike towards the top-right corner, but Areola tips around the post with a fantastic stretching save. The West Ham goalkeeper has been on fire in north London!

Arsenal vs West Ham United

22:06

Alvarez dives to block behind when Nketiah crosses from the right flank. Saka delivers the corner towards the near post, from which Nketiah attempts an audacious overhead kick that Areola comfortably saves.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

22:05

As has been the case all game, Odegaard breezes inside but his left-footed strike is greeted by a wall of Hammers. Areola collects, goes down with the loose ball and eats into some more valauble seconds. This has been perfect from Moyes' men.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

22:04

How can Arsenal expect to win the league when their main striker rarely scores goals? Jesus has missed two brilliant second-half opportunities, with the Gunners failing to score from a team total of 2.11 expected goals (xG) so far. This has been a frustrating outing for Arteta's side, who may look to strengthen their striking options in January if possible.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

22:02

The Arsenal supporters are furious as Emerson clatters through the back of Saka. It is not the foul but the decision the fans are aggrieved with, as they feel referee Oliver has missed an opportunity to play advantage. Tensions are rising in north London!

Arsenal vs West Ham United

22:00

Referee Oliver sticks with the original decision as the VAR reviews and confirms the on-field call. Saka went down after beating Ogbonna but the Arsenal winger could have been accused of simulation for that one. It remains 2-0 to West Ham.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

22:00

NO PENALTY! Jesus falls backwards when holding off the challenge of Ogbonna, who sticks out a leg as Saka bursts past him with the loose ball. The Arsenal winger goes down as the hosts appeal for a penalty but referee Oliver shakes his head and waves play on. The VAR will take a look at this one, however...

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:57

What a ball! Odegaard powers inside before pinging a well-weighted left-footed cross towards the back post from the right flank. Smith Rowe bursts towards the delivery but fails to reach with his head as Areola watches behind for a goal-kick.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:56

Limited to appearances from the bench after his return from injury, Smith Rowe comes on for a late cameo by replacing Trossard. Can the Arsenal academy product prove the hero?

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:56

SAVE! Saliba tries to dictate play from deep, drilling into the feet of Saka. The Arsenal winger ghosts inside onto his favoured left foot, angling a low strike between the legs of a West Ham defender but straight into the grasp of Areola.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:54

Ward-Prowse takes a while over a free-kick before clipping down the left-hand side, where Benrahma fails to keep it in play under pressure from Saka. The Hammers would have been better swinging that set-piece goalwards, Moyes may think.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:53

Odegaard, the man for a magical moment, cuts inside and slices a frustrated and miscued left-footed strike well wide of Areola's target. West Ham are edging closer towards the full-time whistle.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:52

SAVE! The Hammers have their backs against the wall as Odegaard dances into the right of the area before angling a low cross towards the near post. Trossard controls well before his low right-footed strike is kicked behind for a corner by Areola.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:49

Nelson lunges in with a late sliding challenge on Soucek, pulling out at the last minute but still catching the West Ham man. The Arsenal substitute goes into the book for that tackle.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:49

Alvarez's headed clearance only falls as far as Saka, who offloads for Rice before the midfielder's low strike is blocked by a combination of Ogbonna and Soucek.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:48

Nelson's left-sided free-kick is woeful, lifting a wasteful chance both high and wide of Areola's goal from a tight angle. Moyes' side will take that all game as the clock ticks on at the Emirates.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:47

Nelson and Nketiah are queuing up as Odegaard clips another inviting delivery from the right-hand side. West Ham manage to stand firm before Kudus hacks down Jesus near the left flank, conceding a free-kick in a promising position.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:45

The Hammers were 2-1 victors at Tottenham earlier in the season, with Moyes on course to complete an unlikely double over the north London clubs. There is still a long way to go here, of course, but West Ham have been simply brilliant thus far.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:44

ANOTHER GREAT OPPORTUNITY! Odegaard's magical feet release White towards the right-hand byline, from which the right-back dinks a delicate chip towards the far post. Jesus is completely unmarked, sneaking away from Coufal, but heads over with the goal at his mercy. That is two huge chances for the Arsenal striker in as many minutes.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:42

CHANCE! Saka finds space down the right flank and swings a delightful left-footed curling cross towards the penalty spot. Jesus gets up well, beating team-mate Nketiah to the ball, but sends his header straight at Areola from close range. The Brazil striker should do better with that sort of opportunity.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:41

Bowen does the hard yards to dispossess Saliba but his attempted pass to his right for Kudus is poor as the hosts intercept. At the other end, Areola makes an expert last-ditch intervention to keep a deflected clearance in play without conceding a corner.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:39

Alvarez, a quiet hero in this West Ham team, throws himself at a block from Saka's right-wing cross. The Hammers are seemingly everywhere at the moment, with Arsenal's possessional dominance translating into little in the way of significant chances.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:38

Just over 30 minutes remain as Arteta cuts a frustrated figure on the touchline. The West Ham supporters are enjoying themselves, suggesting Rice's transfer fee to Arsenal was heavily inflated in comparison to his quality. The England midfielder will not be too bothered by that, though, with his sole focus on getting his new side back into this game.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:36

The frustration inside the Emirates is evident for all to see (and hear) as Jesus curls a timid effort well over Areola's target. The Gunners are unbeaten in north London across all competitions this season, but need a late second-half comeback to keep that record intact.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:35

After winning three consecutive league games against Arsenal between February 2006 and April 2007, West Ham have won now just two of their last 30 against the Gunners (D6 L22). The Hammers could be on course for a rare victory here!

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:32

Goal Konstantinos Mavropanos

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:32

Bowen has Emerson outside of him to his left and offloads before the left-back drills a cross that White has to turn behind for a corner. The Hammers will all come forward for this one...

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:31

SO CLOSE! Against his former side, Rice receives a short offload from Trossard before whipping a 20-yard right-footed strike towards the top-left corner. Areola remains motionless as the England midfielder's effort goes narrowly over his crossbar.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:29

This is going to be a long 40-plus minutes for West Ham. The Hammers are penned back inside their own third as Martinelli loops a cross over Jesus and out for a goal-kick. Moyes will want his side to take this game in five-minute spells, managing the potential danger and ticking off the checkpoints as they edge closer towards full-time.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:27

That is a painful one for Trossard, who stays down after the challenge with Kudus. Referee Oliver takes his time to check on the Arsenal midfielder, who is fine to continue after being helped up by team-mate Jesus.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:26

Mavropanos takes no chances before Alvarez comes across to clear for a corner as Jesus and Odegaard look to attack down the right flank. The Norway international pings a low delivery towards the edge of the area, where Kudus and Trossard slam into each other as the ball loops off the Arsenal forward and out for a goal-kick.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:25

West Ham have won four of their nine Premier League away games this season (D1 L4), already more than they won on the road in the whole of last season (W3 D3 L13). However, the Hammers are without a clean sheet in their last 13 away from home in the league, shipping 31 goals in the process. A shutout here would ensure an unlikely victory, however.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:21

Arsenal get the ball rolling for the second half. The decision for Soucek's opening goal appears to have split opinions of football supporters, but can the Gunners put that behind them and respond in this next 45 minutes?

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:10

Moyes will be asking for more of the same from his West Ham side, who have defended with dogged brilliance led by centre-back pairing Mavropanos and Ogbonna. Saka hit the post towards the end of the first half, having also forced a smart save from Areola earlier, but the visitors will fancy their chances of sitting deep and hitting on the counter-attack in the next period. However, the loss of the injured Paqueta will only aid Arsenal's cause as the hosts attempt to respond.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:08

An air of discontent looms over Emirates Stadium as a stuttering Arsenal head in 1-0 down to West Ham at half-time in the Premier League. The Gunners have been in complete control but trail to Soucek's contentious 13th-minute opener. Bowen assisted the early strike, with the VAR and on-field match officials concluding the Hammers winger managed to keep the ball in play, with a similarly controversial decision as to the one Arteta's side suffered at Newcastle earlier in the season. The north London club must find a way back into this game, regardless of their opinions on referee Oliver's decision-making for the only goal of this clash so far.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:06

HALF-TIME: ARSENAL 0-1 WEST HAM

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:05

Moyes has never won in 22 attempts away against Arsenal in all competitions (D4 L18). He’s only faced Chelsea on the road more without ever winning in his managerial career (23). The Scot may be starting to dream of a first triumph against the Gunners as half-time approaches.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:04

Paqueta is now back on the bench for West Ham with his left leg strapped up in bandaging. Moyes will be desperate for the Brazilian's injury to not be too serious, just as the Hammers are finding form in both Europe and the Premier League.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:02

Owing to Paqueta's first-half injury and Soucek's opening goal, there will be five minutes of additional time to end this half. Can Arsenal muster a response?

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:01

Ward-Prowse's right-sided corner is headed away by Jesus, who wins a free-kick after Benrahma clips back towards the Arsenal area. Just over a minute remains for the hosts to snatch an equaliser before the break.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

21:00

Saka, perhaps frustrated with his miss just a minute ago, fells Emerson when backtracking towards the right-hand touchline. Arteta continues to gesture wildly as Kudus' left-footed long-range effort deflects behind for a West Ham corner.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:59

OFF THE POST! Odegaard slips a lovely throughball inside Ogbonna, leaving Saka one-on-one with Areola. The Arsenal winger tightens the angle with a poor touch, though, before smashing a right-footed strike into the right post. Trossard is there on the follow-up but can only turn a quick-thinking rebound wide of the target.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:57

Frustration continues to grow from the home crowd as West Ham, camped inside their own 18-yard box, clear once more. Areola then gratefully dives on a low Martinelli cross, eating into some more valuable seconds in north London.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:56

Saka knows exactly what he is doing as Kudus breaks away, hauling the West Ham midfielder down with a cynical foul. The Arsenal winger avoids a caution, but the Hammers will not be too bothered as the free-kick buys the visitors some much-needed rest.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:54

Saka has been involved in 18 goals in his last 17 home games in all competitions, scoring 11 and assisting seven. He’s also had a hand in three goals in his last four league games against West Ham (one goal, two assists), though he did miss a penalty against the Hammers at the London Stadium last season. The England winger has already attempted a game-high three shots here, too.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:53

WIDE! Arsenal have three or four opportunties for someone to shoot as Odegaard lays out to Saka, who angles towards the middle. Jesus flicks to his left for Martinelli, who curls a right-footed shot well wide. Soucek was also late on a tackle on Jesus but the VAR checks the foul and deems it not to be worth a penalty.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:51

White's right-wing cross hits the head of the retreating Emerson and spins out for another Arsenal corner. Saka goes short before Zinchenko's delicate delivery is flicked well wide by White towards the left of West Ham's area.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:49

Substitution Lucas Tolentino Coelho de Lima Mohamed Saïd Benrahma

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:48

This is not good news for West Ham. Paqueta pulls up, having also struggled in the warm-up before this game, and goes down immediately. The medical team rush on to tend to their Brazilian star, whose game will likely come to an end here with a muscular injury.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:47

GOOD SAVE! Jesus ghosts inside from the right flank and crosses a delicate chip towards the penalty spot. Saka, an unlikely aerial target, flicks on towards the roof of the net but Areola tips the header over with a fine acrobatic stop.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:45

Trossard whips in the left-sided corner but, yet again, Coufal clears at the near post. The former Brighton man has endured a torrid time on set-pieces in this first half, surely it is time to give another Arsenal player a go?

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:44

Saka, seemingly fed up by a lack of action, cuts inside from the right flank and sees his left-footed curling effort deflected behind for a corner. The Emirates raises in noise, but can Arteta's side find an equaliser?

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:43

Odegaard and Trossard hover over a wide free-kick, around 20 yards away from the West Ham goal. The Belgium international looks to go for a strange routine, however, and the visitors' wall intervene before Areola can be tested.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:43

Zinchenko's left-wing cross causes some problems as Mavropanos fails to clear, although Odegaard cannot control with slow reactions near the penalty spot. Arteta's side have monopolised the ball and set up camp inside the West Ham half before Ward-Prowse fells Jesus and concedes a free-kick.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:41

Kudus once again does his duties at the other end by dispossessing Trossard after a two-minute period of Arsenal possession. Bowen takes his side up the pitch soon after, winning a throw-in and a much-needed breather for the away team.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:40

A prolonged spell of Arsenal possession seems to not bother West Ham at all as the visitors are content to sit deep and invite the hosts onto them. For now, Arteta's side remain patient on the ball, working it methodically from one flank to the other.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:38

Arsenal have won 12 of their last 13 Premier League home games against West Ham, with the exception being a 2-0 loss on the opening weekend of the 2015-16 campaign. The Gunners will have to come from behind, however, to keep that impressive record up here.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:36

Saka, perhaps looking for the foul, falls to the ground as Emerson and Paqueta defend inside their own box. Referee Oliver immediately refutes appeals for a penalty, much to the frustration of the home crowd.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:35

West Ham have avoided defeat in their last six matches when scoring the opening goal in the Premier League, dating back to September 2023 against Manchester City (a 3-1 loss). There is a long way to go yet for the Hammers, though.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:34

Saka, Rice and White all try and fail to create a shooting chance on the edge of the West Ham area. This could be route-one traffic for the rest of the half, but Moyes and his men will not care!

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:33

The VAR takes an age over the Soucek goal before confirming whether it can stand. Similar to the goal conceded against Newcastle United by Arsenal earlier in the season, the replays try to deem whether the ball stays in play after Bowen hooks back for the assist. Eventually, referee Oliver confirms the original on-field decision and it is 1-0 West Ham!

Arsenal vs West Ham United

Good football! Odegaard feeds the diagonal run of Martinelli, who cuts back towards the edge of the West Ham box for Trossard. The Belgium international angles a first-time right-footed strike well over when leaning back, however.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:27

Ward-Prowse takes his time over the wide free-kick before whipping towards the penalty spot. A slight deflection finds Soucek, who can only redirect harmlessly wide of Raya's target.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:25

Zinchenko needlessly lunges in on Coufal and concedes an avoidable free-kick in a promising position on Arsenal's left. Ward-Prowse will fancy his chances with this delivery...

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:24

Martinelli's left-wing chip is blocked behind for a corner by Coufal, the first of the game. Trossard delivers from the set-piece but the West Ham right-back clears at the near post.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:23

Kudus does his defensive duties when tracking back to deal with Martinelli, who is hugging the left-hand touchline. On the opposite side, Saka crosses towards the back post but Soucek pokes away on two occasions.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:21

Every attack is coming down Arsenal's right-hand side as Odegaard and Saka continue to link up. The Arsenal winger whips a right-footed cross in but Areola claws away as Martinelli lurks at the far post.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:20

SAVE! White, Rice and Odegaard pen West Ham inside their own half before the latter flicks through with a neat pass towards the right of the area. Saka speeds onto the throughball before curling a left-footed strike straight at Areola. The England winger will be disappointed to not find either corner with that chance.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:18

OVER! Coufal launches a long throw-in towards the area as Mavropanos challenges at the near post. A loose ball falls to Ward-Prowse, who from around 20 yards out fires a right-footed strike over Raya's goal.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

Referee Michael Oliver gets this Premier League clash underway!

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:13

Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 13 home games in all competitions (W11 D2) since a 3-0 loss to Brighton in May. The Gunners have won their last seven at the Emirates Stadium by an aggregate score of 21-2. Can Arteta’s side continue that impressive run? We’re about to find out as kick-off approaches in north London…

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:09

Moyes is also forced into one change from the victory over Man Utd. Kurt Zouma is not in the squad, with Ogbonna replacing the Frenchman at centre-back. Nayef Aguerd and Michail Antonio are still not fit enough to feature for the Hammers, who will rely on Bowen, Kudus and Paqueta in attack.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

20:05

Arteta opts for one change from the draw with Liverpool, albeit it is an enforced alteration. Kai Havertz misses out through suspension, which means Trossard comes in to take his place alongside Rice and Odegaard in midfield. Saka, Jesus and Martinelli are the front three once again as that trio aim to put West Ham to the sword.

West Ham shot up to sixth in the Premier League table heading into Christmas after a convincing 2-0 victory over Erik ten Hag’s struggling Manchester United. The Hammers, besides a 5-0 embarrassment at Fulham, have defeated Wolves, Tottenham and Burnley in recent weeks as optimism continues to grow at London Stadium. Owing to a later fixture on Matchday 19, David Moyes’ men slipped down to seventh – thanks to Manchester United’s last-gasp win over Aston Villa – but would return to their previous position with an unlikely derby victory here.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

19:45

Arsenal celebrated Christmas at the top of the Premier League tree after a battling 1-1 draw against fellow title contenders Liverpool at Anfield last time out. The Gunners sat a point clear of Jurgen Klopp’s Reds and Unai Emery’s Aston Villa after 18 games, with Tottenham four further back and Manchester City trailing by six. Mikel Arteta’s side slipped down to second after Jurgen Klopp’s side were 2-0 victors at Burnley on Tuesday, although the north London club have not lost in the league since a controversial defeat to Newcastle United on November 4 and the Spaniard will see this as another winnable chance to return to the summit.
