Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:58

The full-time whistle sounds, and it's another statement win for Arsenal in the Premier League title race! It always looked like a long way back for Newcastle when Botman's own goal and Havertz's tap-in put them 2-0 down at the break. Howe's side improved somewhat in the second half, but they fell even further behind when the outstanding Saka turned Livramento inside-out before firing home, then Kiwior added a fourth from Rice's inswinging corner. Former Arsenal midfielder Willock came off the bench to get one back late on, but it's another resounding victory for the Gunners, who are now within two points of leaders Liverpool and one behind Manchester City in second! Newcastle, meanwhile, stay two points behind seventh-placed Brighton and Hove Albion, and they could fall below Wolves and West Ham before the end of the matchday. That's all from the Emirates, so thank you for joining us and we'll see you next time!

FULL-TIME: ARSENAL 4-1 NEWCASTLE UNITED.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:54

Now Nelson takes aim from 25 yards out, but his low drive is easily held by Karius, dropping down to his right.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:53

OFF THE LINE! Arsenal almost add a fifth, with Burn denying Smith Rowe! The Gunners substitute latches onto the loose ball after Nelson's right-wing cross is blocked, and he beats Karius with his left-footed finish. However, he doesn't beat Burn, who gets back to make the clearance and keep Newcastle within three.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:53

Newcastle have now conceded 20 goals in seven Premier League games since the turn of the year, having only shipped 16 in their final 11 matches to end 2023. Arsenal are the story here, but Howe needs to find a way of shoring up his backline.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:51

We will have five minutes of stoppage time to end this game. You suspect that might be five minutes too many for Newcastle.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:48

Elneny is on, and it's the outstanding Jorginho who makes way to a standing ovation. He has controlled things from the off, really staking a claim for a regular starting spot.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:48

As you would expect, the pace of this game has really dropped since that influx of substitutions. We're about to see another change, with Elneny prepared to enter the fray.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:46

Willock is the first Newcastle player to score away against Arsenal in the Premier League since Ayoze Perez in December 2014. It won't change the result, but it's some consolation for the travelling Toon Army.

Trossard skips away from Trippier with ease, showboating with a fantastic touch before winning a throw-in. This really has been a miserable outing for the side in black and white.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:43

A lot will be made of Arsenal's performance in the final third, but at the other end, they have faced just three shots on target in their last four league games including this one. We've seen next to nothing of Newcastle as an attacking threat.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:41

Smith Rowe is involved for the first time, and Trippier makes a crucial intervention to stop him from pulling the trigger after breaking into the area. Newcastle have 10 more minutes plus stoppage time to endure.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:40

Jorginho's introduction into the lineup has proven a masterstroke from Arteta; the Italy international has really pulled the strings here. He leads all players on the pitch for touches (105), successful passes (88) and passes in the final third (31). Newcastle have sat off him, and he has taken them apart.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:39

For those interested, Arsenal's goal difference is now two better than Liverpool's and seven better than Manchester City's. Arteta won't want the Gunners to let up – this title race could be decided by the finest of margins.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:38

Arsenal are the first team in Premier League history to score two or more goals in seven successive halves of football in the competition. They have found their groove at the perfect time.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:33

With the game surely beyond Newcastle, Howe withdraws a couple of his key players. Guimaraes makes way, having avoided a booking which would have landed him a two-match ban, as Willock comes on.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:33

Arsenal are well on course for a sixth straight Premier League win, and they have now scored an astonishing 25 goals in those matches. There could still be more punishment to come for Newcastle…

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:28

Saka has now scored in five straight Premier League games, becoming the first Gunner to do so since Olivier Giroud in 2015, and the first Englishman to do so for the club since Ian Wright in 1994. He deserved a goal for his electric display, and now he has one!

Barnes, meanwhile, takes the place of Isak. Gordon will play centrally now, with Howe not taking any risks with Isak following his latest injury lay-off.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:24

It's a double change for Newcastle. First, Murphy replaces the disappointing Almiron on the right flank.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:24

Both managers are turning to their benches here. Martinelli gets a standing ovation as he becomes the first player to make way, with Arteta introducing Trossard.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:22

OVER! That's much better from Newcastle! Guimaraes sweeps a lovely pass out to Isak, who kills it dead with the outside of his boot before marauding towards the corner of the box. He cuts inside before shooting, but Raya can watch it whistle over his crossbar.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:21

We're past the hour mark, and the game has been pretty even since half-time. Newcastle haven't really carved out a clear-cut chance, but at just 2-0 down, they are not out of this contest.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:20

Arsenal appear to have men over as the ball drops to Saka midway through the Newcastle half, but he overhits his volleyed pass towards Martinelli, and the chance is gone. The Gunners are not quite playing with the same verve as they did before the break.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:18

Since losing 3-2 to Tottenham in November 2011, Arsenal have won each of their last 42 home Premier League games in which they've led by at least two goals at half-time.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:17

Arsenal are not pressing anywhere near as aggressively now as they did in the first half. Perhaps Arteta has told his players to take a step back, in the knowledge that Newcastle will have to chase the game and leave gaps at some point.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:15

Great challenge from Trippier, who absolutely had to win that 50-50 with Havertz attempting to break in behind on the left. That gets Newcastle on the front foot, but Gordon fails to keep Trippier's overhit cross alive on the far side and the chance is gone.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:14

The home fans are in fine voice as Arsenal knock the ball around patiently in front of Newcastle's packed rearguard. They have been treated to some excellent football here, but they'd love a third goal to kill of any hopes of a fightback.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:12

Martinelli gets a chance to run at Longstaff, who has endured a torrid outing. He skips past him with remarkable ease, but his cross is blocked at the front post and Almiron can then win a free-kick to break up the game.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:11

Arsenal's 30 Premier League clean sheets against Newcastle are the most any side has kept against another in the competition's history. Is another shutout on the way here?

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:10

A quick check of both teams' average positions tells the story of the first half; no Newcastle player spent the majority of their time in Arsenal's half, while every Arsenal outfielder bar Saliba had an average position inside the Newcastle half. The Magpies are looking to be a little braver since the restart.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:09

Save! Newcastle are at least showing more endeavour now! Gordon breaks in behind White and scampers to the corner of the box, before seeing a low, curling effort held by Raya. Isak was lurking in case of a rebound.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:08

Now Isak breaks in behind at the other end, but he delays his shot and Raya is able to smother it, before Arsenal get plenty of red shirts back around Isak to prevent him from finding a team-mate at the second attempt. That's a warning for the Gunners – this game is not over yet.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:08

HUGE CHANCE FOR 3-0! That should be game over! Saka drives infield from the right before finding Odegaard, who slips a perfectly weighted pass in behind for Havertz. He's one-on-one with Karius, but he prods his finish across goal and wide of the bottom-right corner. He had to score!

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

21:05

We're back under way for the second half as Newcastle get the ball rolling again! No changes for either side at the break.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:57

Zero shots, one touch in the Arsenal area and seven final-third entries. That is the sum of Newcastle's first-half efforts, and Howe has a lot of work to do at half-time. Arsenal, meanwhile, have fired 10 shots at Karius' goal, registering 34 touches in the Magpies' area from 33 entries into the final third. It has been the definition of one-way traffic. Is more of the same in store after the break?

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:54

Paul Tierney brings the first half to a close, and Arsenal lead Newcastle 2-0 following a mesmerising first 45 minutes from Arteta's men. The only question is; how are Newcastle still in the contest? The Gunners have been rampant from the off, penning their opponents back and taking the lead after 18 minutes. Gabriel met Saka's inswinging corner from the right, and though Karius kept his header out, Livramento knocked the loose ball against Botman and in for an own goal. It was 2-0 just six minutes later, with Martinelli darting onto Jorginho's chipped pass before putting it on a plate for Havertz to finish. Martinelli and Saka have gone close since then, with Newcastle looking ragged and Karius' goal living a charmed life, but they got to half-time without suffering further damage. Is there any way back for Howe's men?

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:50

HALF-TIME: ARSENAL 2-0 NEWCASTLE UNITED.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:50

Havertz pleads with the referee after going down under a challenge from Schar on the edge of the box. On second viewing, the Newcastle defender pulled Havertz down by his arm… he might be fortunate that incident occurred the right side of the line.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:49

Newcastle are enjoying a little more time on the ball now, but they are still yet to manage a single shot either on or off target. The first 45 minutes could hardly have gone any better for Arsenal.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:47

We will have three minutes of stoppage time to end this first half. Guimaraes tries to dance to the edge of the box as Newcastle seek a lifeline, but Rice dispossesses him.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:45

Now Newcastle look to have a chance as Gordon breaks in behind to go one-on-one with Raya… but the flag is raised! In any case, Gordon looked to round the goalkeeper and simply prodded the ball straight at him.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:45

Some of the football on display from Arsenal so far has been breathtaking. Havertz and Odegaard fire passes into one another on the edge of the box before the latter offloads to Saka. His deep cross is kept alive by Rice, and Havertz juggles the ball before looking to return it to him, only to be penalised for handball.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:44

Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 20 Premier League games that have come after playing in Europe in midweek (16 wins, four draws), since losing 1-0 to Manchester City in February 2021. They've shown no hangover from Wednesday's defeat to Porto here.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:42

There are a few boos as Guimaraes goes down in midfield, with the Newcastle physio primed to come on, but it appears the Brazilian just has a loose boot. Five minutes plus stoppage time to go until half-time, and Newcastle are desperately trying to take the sting out of this match.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:41

Saka takes the resulting corner, and it's another menacing delivery towards the back post, but a striped shirt gets there first to make the clearance.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:41

SAVE! It's wave after wave at present as Martinelli stands up Trippier before crossing. It's only cleared as far as Saka, who jinks onto his right foot before firing at goal, and Karius has to spring to his left to push it wide. Newcastle desperately need half-time here.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:40

Newcastle are caught out by Arsenal's high press yet again as Havertz dispossesses Longstaff. His initial cross is cleared, but it comes back to him and he finds Martinelli. With the Brazilian shaping to shoot, Miley gets back to make a crucial challenge.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:38

Havertz has scored in successive Premier League games for the first time since March 2023 with Chelsea. He has been excellent so far, dragging Schar and Botman all over the place from his false-nine role.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:37

OVER! Jorginho looks for the run of Kiwior with his chipped pass, but Trippier gets there first. However, Longstaff doesn't react to the loose ball near the edge of the box, and Martinelli lashes a first-time volley high and wide. Newcastle look shellshocked.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:36

Another Newcastle mistake – this one from Guimaraes – gifts Arsenal a corner on their right-hand side. It's worked short as Odegaard finds a better angle for the cross, and Schar heads clear. As has been the case all game, though, possession is immediately back with the Gunners.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:35

We're past the half-hour mark, and this is a matter of attack versus defence. Arsenal have played 110 passes in the final third to Newcastle's four. Gordon, Isak and Almiron, meanwhile, have had just 20 touches between them.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:34

OVER! Arsenal are still hunting a third goal, and they almost get one at the end of a terrific move. Saka finds Odegaard on the right-hand side, and the Arsenal skipper immediately returns it to him with a delicate backheel. Saka reaches the byline before crossing on his right foot, but he just gets slightly too much on it as Martinelli nods over the crossbar!

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:31

Saliba goes direct this time, lifting a pass over the top of the Newcastle backline for Havertz to chase. Karius has to rush out of his area to meet it, and fortunately for the Magpies, he shows good composure to mop up the danger.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:30

Newcastle finally mount their first foray forward with Almiron checking back to cross, but with Isak and Gordon lurking, it's White that gets there to make the clearance for Arsenal.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:30

Arsenal have now scored two or more goals in their last six halves of Premier League football (second half v Liverpool, both halves v West Ham and Burnley, first half v Newcastle). They are absolutely flying!

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:29

IT SHOULD BE 3-0! What are Newcastle doing?! Schar stands still on the ball near his own box, then inexplicably plays a pass straight to Odegaard. The Arsenal skipper bursts into the box and bears down on Karius, but he then squares it for Havertz instead of shooting, and his pass runs too long. This is one-way traffic.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:24

Arsenal have scored more goals from set-pieces (18, excluding penalties) and from corners specifically (12) than any other side in the Premier League this season.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:23

Newcastle simply have not got going here, having just 28.7 per cent of the possession and failing to record a shot, a touch in the Arsenal area, or even a final third entry! Arsenal, by contrast, have been electric.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:21

Arsenal are well on top here and are looking to put this game to bed early. Martinelli darts down the left to cross, and his low delivery almost deflects into the path of Havertz in the six-yard box. However, mere moments after scoring an own goal, Botman saves Newcastle with a vital clearance.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:18

It's another Arsenal corner as Livramento tracks Saka's run before clearing a deep cross behind at the far post. Saka will deliver this one from the Arsenal right…

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:18

Goal Gabriel dos Santos Magalhães

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:18

Newcastle have all 10 outfielders within 30 yards of their own goal as Arsenal probe, but Jorginho still finds Martinelli inside a crowded penalty area. He turns one way and then the other, but Trippier gets back to make a vital challenge.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:16

Trippier seems to be moving smoothly, which hasn't gone down too well with the Arsenal fans. With a quarter of an hour gone, Newcastle are yet to enjoy anything resembling a prolonged spell in possession.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:16

There's an early concern for the Magpies with Trippier down, holding his knee. He quickly gets back to his feet, however, as Odegaard has a word with the referee, and the home fans feel the visitors are already engaging in a spot of clock management. Last season's fixture between these teams at the Emirates saw Newcastle's gamesmanship come under the spotlight as they dug in for a goalless draw.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:13

Arsenal can overwhelm teams when they play at pace, particularly at the Emirates, and they're looking to do so in the early exchanges here. Botman hacks Jorginho's cross away, but the Gunners will come straight back…

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:13

SAVE! Karius is going to be busy here. Rice breaks into the box on the right-hand side with the ball at his feet before lashing goalwards, and the Newcastle goalkeeper has to stand firm to bat it away at his near post. It's still all Arsenal.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:13

Poor! Rice is gifted possession in a good area and Arsenal look to be in again, but Odegaard's attempted flick towards Martinelli is too heavy and it runs all the way through to Karius. Newcastle can't get out at present, though.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:11

SAVE! Rice steps up to recover possession from Livramento before finding Havertz, who in turn works the ball right to Saka. He steps infield from the right side of the box, then sees his shot deflect off Botman and loop into the arms of Karius.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:07

Yellow Card Martin Ødegaard

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:07

Arsenal have begun a calendar year with five successive league wins for the first time in the club's history, improving their goal difference by 19 during this run (21 scored, two conceded). Only between February and April 2023 (a run of seven) have the Gunners won more Premier League games consecutively in a single season under Arteta.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:06

Newcastle need to settle down here. Schar takes his time inside his own area and Havertz presses him to recover possession near the corner flag, but Guimaraes relieves the pressure by getting back to win a foul. Arsenal have started very quickly, just like they did in their last home game against Liverpool.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:05

There are a few boos as Gordon gets his first touch of the ball… the Arsenal fans clearly haven't forgiven him for that controversial winner in November, which prompted Arteta to describe refereeing standards as a "disgrace" and "embarrassing".

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:03

Rice's second corner is a better one, with White flicking it on… but Gabriel is just crowded out before Saka blazes over the crossbar from the edge of the box. The Gunners have wasted no time in showing Newcastle their intentions, though.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:03

Fast start from Arsenal, who win a corner within 20 seconds through Martinelli on the left-hand side. Rice's delivery is headed away from the six-yard box, but the England man will get another chance.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

20:02

We are under way for this huge primetime clash as Rice gets the ball rolling! There's a terrific atmosphere at the Emirates under the floodlights, with so many storylines feeding into this fixture!

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

19:56

Having won 1-0 at St James' Park in the reverse fixture in November, Newcastle are looking to complete a Premier League double against Arsenal for just the second time, previously doing so in 1994-95. Can the Magpies cause an upset here? The teams are out, and kick-off is fast approaching!

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

19:49

Howe, meanwhile, makes three alterations to the Newcastle side which started last week's 2-2 draw with Bournemouth. Martin Dubravka is out due to illness, so Karius comes in for his first Premier League appearance since May 2018, when he played for Liverpool in a 4-0 rout of Brighton and Hove Albion. Livramento replaces the out-of-form Burn at left-back, while Isak is back after missing the Magpies' last three games, so Barnes drops to the bench.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

19:49

Arteta only makes one change to the Arsenal XI which began Wednesday's surprise Champions League defeat to Porto, with Jorginho replacing Trossard to bolster the Gunners' midfield. That likely means Havertz will play as a false nine, and the hosts also have Jesus available from the bench after an injury caused the Brazilian to miss four games.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are desperate for a result to boost their hopes of European qualification after enduring a disappointing winter. The Magpies are actually unbeaten in their last five games across all competitions, but they required a stoppage-time leveller to salvage a draw against Bournemouth last week, having also fought back for a point against Luton Town a fortnight earlier. Eddie Howe's men can go seventh, four points off sixth-placed Manchester United, with a win, but a defeat would open the door to the likes of West Ham, Chelsea and Wolves below them.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

19:38

This fixture has become something of a grudge match recently, with Newcastle getting under Arsenal's skin with a memorable rearguard action on this ground last January and Anthony Gordon's controversial goal deciding this season's reverse fixture at St James' Park, prompting a remarkable outburst from Mikel Arteta. More than bragging rights are at stake here, though, with Arsenal desperate to respond after seeing title rivals Manchester City beat Bournemouth 1-0. The Gunners start this game four points adrift of City and five away from table-topping Liverpool, who are not in Premier League action this weekend due to their involvement in the EFL Cup final.
