Who is Arne Slot? What to know about new Liverpool manager

Jürgen Klopp is no longer the manager of Liverpool after serving in the role for nine years. The club announced Monday they plan to hire Dutch up-and-comer Arne Slot to take over from the 56-year-old Klopp.

Slot, 45, was the manager at Feyenoord Rotterdam in the Dutch Eredivisie for the last three seasons and is a former player for Dutch club PEC Zwolle – among others in the Eredivisie and Eerste Divisie. In total, he has five seasons of managing experience across three different Dutch teams.

The Dutchman led Feyenoord to a couple of trophy wins in recent years and has achieved a winning record with a positive goal differential at every club he's managed so far.

Liverpool's Monday announcement noted that Slot would officially take over managerial duties on June 1, pending a work permit. Assuming no last-minute shake-ups, Slot will be the Reds' seventh manager since the turn of the century. Here's what to know about him.

Why is Klopp leaving Liverpool?

Klopp announced he'd voluntarily step down from Liverpool's managerial role in January, even as the Reds were contending for a Premier League title.

“It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy," he explained at the time.

In a corresponding statement, Fenway Sports Group – owners of Liverpool – president Mike Gordon said, "I would like to take this opportunity to place on record our gratitude to Jürgen for everything he has done and continues to do for Liverpool Football Club. Thank you, Jürgen. When the time comes, you will never walk alone."

Arne Slot history

Slot was one of Dutch club SC Cambuur's interim head coaches in the 2016-17 season, a year after their relegation from top Dutch league Eredivisie. He helped the team finish third in Eerste Divisie, narrowly missing a promotion back to the Eredivisie, and brought them to the first semifinal appearance in the Dutch KNVB Cup in club history.

After the one season in the interim role at Cambuur, he bounced to Eredivisie club AZ Alkmaar as an assistant coach. He took over managerial duties in 2019 and led AZ to a season in contention for the top of the table before the COVID-19 pandemic cut the season short. The club finished tied for the lead with Ajax in points.

In December 2020, Slot was fired from AZ after the club discovered he was in contract talks with fellow Eredivisie side Feyenoord for the following season. Ten days after his firing, Feyenoord announced Slot's hiring as their head coach for 2021-22 and beyond.

Slot led Feyenoord to the UEFA Europa Conference League final in his first season, won the Eredivisie with them in his second season and just led the team to a KNVB Cup win in his third and final season.

Arne Slot managerial record

Slot-led teams hold a 151-51-40 record with a +304 goal differential across 242 matches played. That's good for a 62.4% win percentage in five seasons as a manager.

Arne Slot song

When the rumors of Slot taking over from Klopp were still not official, Klopp led thousands of Liverpool faithful in a chant for his successor during his farewell speech at Anfield.

It went: "Arne Slot! La la la la la la."

Liverpool 2023-24 season

Liverpool were in contention for a Premier League title for much of the last season and even sat at the top of the table for 12 of the season's 38 weeks. The Reds found most of their success at home in 2023-24, having lost only one match and drawing in three at Anfield.

The club's one home loss – a 0-1 effort against Crystal Palace – came on Matchday 33 and left Liverpool in a tough spot. They played three consecutive matches as the away side following that sole home loss. Though the club came away with four points in those three matches, it wasn't enough to make up the distance Arsenal and Manchester City built with streaks of six and nine straight wins, respectively, to finish their seasons.

The Reds still finished in third in the Premier League and clinched a spot in next year's UEFA Champions League group stage.

Liverpool fared well in tournament play this season. The Reds won the EFL Cup over Chelsea this year in a 1-0 final. They advanced to the FA Cup quarterfinals as well, though they lost to Manchester City after allowing a goal in the final seconds of extra time.

In the UEFA Europa League, Liverpool headed their group with four wins and a +10 goal differential in six matches. They defeated Sparta Praha with an 11-2 aggregate score in the round of 16 but fell to eventual Europa League champions Atalanta in the quarterfinals.
