Armando Bacot named 247Sports favorite for ACC Player of the Year

Though the college basketball season is still five months away, the UNC basketball program continues to be one of a few teams that is racking up multiple offseason honors. That also hasn’t stopped people from looking ahead to next year, either.

The Tar Heels return four starters from a National Championship runner-up team this past season and look to make a run at a return-appearance this upcoming season.

One player who will be a focal point for UNC is big man Armando Bacot. Bacot returns next season after a tremendous junior campaign where he averaged 16.3 points and 13.1 rebounds per game.

Bacot was an All-ACC First-Team selection as a junior en route to tying the NCAA single season record for double-doubles (31) and becoming the first person in NCAA history to have six straight double-doubles in the NCAA Tournament.

One award he didn’t win, however, was ACC Player of the Year. That honor went to Wake Forest point guard Alondes Williams.

But, with Bacot’s decision to return, he is primed to be the player to beat for the award this upcoming season. And, according to 247Sports, he is the preseason favorite to win the award.

Bacot should have won ACC Player of the Year last season, but he came up just short behind Wake Forest’s Alondes Williams. Bacot will enter the 2022-23 season in the pole position. The North Carolina big man is just as good of a rebounder as Kentucky’s Oscar Tshiebwe, and North Carolina’s cohesion should be on full display right away with four starters back.

Bacot has played in 100 games in his UNC basketball career and started 99 of them. He is coming off of a career-high 31.6 minutes per game. If he stays healthy and sees similar numbers to this past season, there is no doubt that he will be the Player of the Year in the ACC.
