Arizona State's Bobby Hurley among 5 most overpaid men's college basketball coaches

USA TODAY Sports recently wrote a story on the five most overpaid coaches in men's college basketball and the fifth name on the list really caught our attention.

Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley.

Paul Myerberg, who wrote the story, wrote this of Hurley being among the most overpaid coaches in college basketball:

"Arizona State won four in a row to open this season's Pac-12 schedule but finished the regular season tied with Stanford and USC near the bottom of the conference. That's been part of the story of Hurley's broader tenure, which began with some major hype in 2015 but has been unable to maintain brief periods of success. That includes back-to-back tournament bids in 2018 and 2019 along with what would have been a likely appearance in the canceled 2020 tournament. But that's been followed by three losing seasons in four years, putting Hurley on the hot seat after nine seasons with the program. He's earning $3.1 million in 2023-24."

The other names on the list? Indiana's Mike Woodson, Kentucky's John Calipari, Louisville's Kenny Payne (who was fired Wednesday) and Maryland's Kevin Willard.

Hurley interestingly makes less than all of those coaches, with Woodson set to earn $4.2 million in compensation this season, Calipari at $8.5 million, Payne at $3.5 million and Willard at $4 million.

Hurley's inclusion on the most over-paid men's college basketball coaches has some interesting timing.

Analysis: Is Bobby Hurley's future with Arizona State in jeopardy after subpar season?

Speculation about Bobby Hurley's future as the coach of the Arizona State men's basketball team is starting to heat up.
Speculation about Bobby Hurley's future as the coach of the Arizona State men's basketball team is starting to heat up.

The Arizona Republic's Jason Wolf and USA TODAY Sports' Steve Berkowitz reported Wednesday that the ASU coach has not signed his contract extension with Arizona State a year after it was announced, making his future at the school potentially murky.

"The terms of the unsigned contract extension were approved by the Arizona Board of Regents in April 2023 and included up to a $2 million buyout, should Hurley leave ASU early for a coaching job with another school," Wolf and Berkowitz reported. "But absent a signed extension, Hurley could leave ASU this summer and owe the university nothing. His signed contract expires June 30."

Hurley's Sun Devils are the No. 11 seed in the Pac-12 Tournament and will face No. 6 seed Utah on Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in the first round of the conference tournament.
