Area basketball roundup for Jan. 30: Canistota boys upend Class B No. 1 Viborg-Hurley

Jan. 30—CANISTOTA, S.D. — Canistota outlasted Class B No. 1 Viborg-Hurley on Tuesday night, upending the Cougars 48-47 for their second loss of the season in boys basketball action.

Tage Ortman had 20 points and eight assists and Brandon Kjetland had 19 points in the win. Jaden Kleinsasser scored seven points for the Hawks, who shot 43.8% from the field. No team led by more than six points, with 10 ties and 14 lead changes in the contest.

For the Cougars, Nick Hanson had a game-high 22 points, while Nolan Kolthoff had nine points. V-H shot 38.8% from the field in the game.

In addition to the game, Canistota raised funds for Viborg-Hurley student Kobee Sherman, who is battling osteosarcoma. The effort brought in $5,006 for the Cougar senior.

Canistota (10-2) hosts Canton on Friday, Feb. 2, while Viborg-Hurley (10-2) will play at Freeman Academy/Marion on Feb. 2 in Marion.

* Winner picked up a 61-15 home win over Miller. Lilly Barfuss scored 12 points, Ava Craven had nine points and Leila Balsiger had eight points.

* Ashlin Jacobsen scored 25 points, and Freeman defeated Scotland 81-16. Peyton McCune added 15 points. For Scotland, Trinity Bietz had five points and three blocks.

* Courtney Sees' all-around effort lifted Avon to a 51-21 win over Menno. Sees had 16 points, seven steals and six assists for the Pirates. Kinley Doom added 12 points, and Rylin Thury had eight rebounds. Ashton Massey's 14 points fronted the Wolves' offense.

* Viborg-Hurley outlasted Canistota 52-44. Aubree Schwartz led V-H with 14 points. Natalie Becker led the Hawks' offense with 17 points, while Kayla Papendick had six points and 12 rebounds.

* Gayville-Volin defeated Tripp-Delmont/Armour 44-35 despite 16 points and five assists from Megan Reiner. Mia Reiner added eight points and seven rebounds. V-H got 21 points from Taylor Hoxeng and 12 points from Maia Achen.

* Wagner raced past Hanson 60-38 in Alexandria. A quartet of Red Raiders were in double digits for scoring, with Macy Koupal logging 16 points, Lydia Yost had 15 points and Ashlyn Koupal had 13 points. Braxton Nedved had 11 points and seven assists for the Red Raiders. Hanson had 12 points from Alyssa Moschell and nine each from Taziah Hawkins and Eliza Oltmanns.

* A near triple-double by Abby Aslesen helped Howard to a 59-40 home win over Irene-Wakonda. Aslesen scored a game-high 19 points, along with 11 rebounds and eight assists. Ann Connor also had a double-double for the Tigers, with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Quinn McDonald led I-W with 12 points.

* Jayla Bruguier scored 18 points, and Marty turned back Colome 70-52. Raelynn Kingsley and Aleah Musser each tabbed 13 points for the Cowgirls.

* Parkston outscored McCook Central/Montrose 23-10 in the fourth quarter to secure a 66-40 win in Salem. Berkley Ziebart led the Trojans with 23 points, while Keeara Oakley added 18 points. For MCM, Abby Wagner was 4-of-5 shooting for 10 points.

* Platte-Geddes scored 28 points in the second half to pull away from Chamberlain 52-48 in Platte. Karly VanDerWerff had 15 points and six rebounds. Cadence Van Zee posted 11 points and six assists. Kori VanDerWerff had eight points, six rebounds and seven assists for the Black Panthers, while Chamberlain had a game-high 22 points from Kinsey Evans. Jayna Handel had 18 points for the Cubs.

* Winner beat Miller 45-33 to improve to 9-4. Shawn Hammerbeck tallied 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting, and Aiden Barfuss had 10 points. Derek Brueggeman had eight points for Miller.

* Freeman blitzed Scotland in a 67-40 win at home. Rocky Ammann had 13 points, while Tate Sorensen posted 12 points and Luke Peters tallied 10 for the hometown Flyers.

* Wagner overcame Jayce Slaba's 23 points for a 50-47 win over Hanson in Alexandria. Joey Cournoyer had 13 points for the Red Raiders, and Preston McFadden had 12 points.

* Kolt Koepsell had 26 points, and Howard notched a 73-35 home win over Irene-Wakonda. Luke Koepsell chipped in 14 points, and Logan Mentele added 12 points. Brody Johnke's 14 points led I-W.

* Gregory cruised past Mount Vernon/Plankinton 85-58 on the strength of 30 points from Noah Bearshield. Daniel Mitchell had 19 points and nine rebounds, with 13 points for Cruz Klundt. The Gorillas converted 60% of its field goal tries in the win. For MVP, Zach Baker had 23 points and Ty Feistner scored 17 points.

* Parkston outscored McCook Central/Montrose 35-22 after halftime for a 62-47 road win in Salem. Luke Bormann had 17 points, with 13 points each from James Deckert and Payton Koehn. Lane Deutsch had 12 points to pace the Fighting Cougars, with 10 points from Owen Alley.

* Platte-Geddes pulled out a close victory over Chamberlain at home on Tuesday 63-61. Chamberlain led 34-33 at halftime and P-G led 50-48 after three quarters. Hayden Sprik had 23 points, one four P-G standouts with 10 or more points, with 12 each from Parker Bailey and Braxton Breukelman and 10 from Tanner Dyk. Chamberlain had 21 points from Kenyon McCloskey and 20 points from Dakota Munger.

* Wessington Springs took down 281 Conference foe Iroquois/Lake Preston 62-42. Four Spartans were in double figures, led by Parker Graff's 17 points. Colby Flowers had 12 points, Blake Larson had 11 points and Ryder Michalek had 10 points for WS.

* Bridgewater-Emery edged Colman-Egan. A pair of Huskies notched double digits, Ben Weber (20 points) and Camdyn Stoterau (15 points), while Weber added 10 rebounds. C-E got 19 points from Jase Mousel.

* Blake Leiferman's double-double of 20 points and 19 rebounds powered Kimball/White Lake over Colome 52-45. Hudson Heath had 12 points and seven boards for the Wildkats, while the Cowboys' Joseph Laprath, Seth Heath, and Jack Anderson had 14, 13, and 10 points, respectively. Anderson also added 10 rebounds.
