Area basketball roundup for Feb. 12: Burke overcomes Karly VanDerWerff's triple-double for win

Feb. 12—PLATTE, S.D. — A sturdy first half effort helped Burke overcome Karly VanDerWerff's triple-double in a 55-49 win over Platte-Geddes in a girls basketball battle on Monday night.

The Cougars scored 21 points in the first quarter, and 14 in the second quarter to take an eight-point lead at halftime The Black Panthers had a 22-20 edge in the second half, but were unable to mount a comeback.

Emmie Hausmann scored a game-high 23 points for Burke, to go with eight rebounds. Cecily Geaghan contributed 15 points and Paige Bull had nine points, while Piper Hansen added eight rebounds, and Kailee Frank dished out five assists. As a team, Burke was 21-of-62 shooting (34 percent) and collected 35 rebounds.

Karly VanDerWerff's 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists led the Black Panthers, while Hadley Hanson had 17 points and Kori VanDerWerff had 10 points and five assists. P-G shot 38 percent from the field and had 12 turnovers.

Burke (10-9) will play its regular-season finale on Thursday, Feb. 15 at Gregory, while Platte-Geddes (7-11) hosts Winner on Tuesday, Feb. 13.

* Scotland earned its second-straight win by defeating Freeman Academy/Marion 37-33. Propelling the effort was Trinity Bietz, who totalled 12 points, nine rebounds and four assists for the Highlanders, while Kailin Odens added nine points. For FAM, Karley Luke finished with 12 points, five assists and four steals.

* Asia VanDerWerff tabbed 21 points, and Gregory bested Colome 56-39. Regan Graesser (15 points) and Ella Sperl (11 points) also reached double digits. For the Cowgirls, Aleah Musser scored 15 points and Shaleena Kingsley had 14 points.

* De Smet ended the game on a 14-7 run to defeat Canistota 44-42. Hazel Luethmers scored 22 points for the Bulldogs, and Aubree Blue had eight points. In the narrow defeat, Kayla Pappendick and Natalie Becker each tabbed 12 points for the Hawks.

* Parkston raced past Estelline/Hendricks 64-30 to improve to 14-5. Lauren Ziebart (19 points) and Berkley Ziebart (16 points) delivered much of the Trojans' offense, while Keeara Oakley had 14 points, and Mya Thuringer tallied seven rebounds and four assists. E/H got 10 points from Kenzy Beare.

* Oakley Weber's 20 points, seven rebounds and four steals helped Bridgewater-Emery clip Howard 46-40. Hayden Hofer added 11 points for the Huskies, while Macie Weber had six points and eight rebounds. Abby Aslesen powered Howard with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

* After leading by 15 points at halftime, Ethan edged Corsica-Stickney 66-64 on Monday, moving the Rustlers to 15-3 on the season. Jack Bartscher had 20 points for Ethan, with 16 points each from Drake Gustafson and Braedon Nebelsick. Corsica-Stickney had 21 points and eight rebounds from Tyson Wentland and 17 points from Jarett Olawsky.

* Luke Bormann had a game-high 18 points as Parkston edged Bon Homme 48-35. Payton Koehn added nine points and Will Jodozi had eight points. For the Cavaliers, Chapin Cooper led the way with 16 points, while Landon Bares had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

* Wagner had four players in double figures to lead the Red Raiders to a 66-58 win at Burke on Monday night. Parker Petry scored 19 points, with 13 points from Jesse Zephier, 11 points from Carter Cournoyer and 10 points from Brady Cournoyer. Reed Benter scored 31 points for Burke and Sam Steele had 16 points.

* Andes Central/Dakota Christian topped Menno 56-36 in boys hoops. Hunter Loeffler had 19 points with 11 points added from Garth Maas for the Thunder, which outscored Menno 30-14 in the second half. For Menno, Izayah Ulmer had 12 points and nine rebounds, with 11 points and eight rebounds from Hunter Yosten.
