Area basketball roundup for Dec. 15: Howard girls hold off McCook Central/Montrose to win in 2OT

Dec. 15—SALEM, S.D. — Behind double-doubles from Abby Aslesen and Ann Connor, Howard girls basketball overcame a McCook Central/Montrose comeback to win 55-52 in double overtime.

Aslesen finished with 17 points and 20 rebounds for the Tigers, while Connor had 14 points and 12 rebounds, with seven coming off the offensive glass. Dakota Spader had nine points, four rebounds, and a pair of steals.

MCM mounted a 19 point second-half deficit to force overtime. Mandi Schock and Natalie Lueth each finished with nine points off the bench, as the Cougars had five players make multiple field goals in the game. Ashtyn DeKnikker had eight points while Abby Wagner finished with 13 rebounds and two blocks.

The Tigers shot 23.2 percent from the field for the game, and 2-of-20 from behind the arc for the game. The Cougars shot 23.5 percent from the field for the game, but shot 31.6 percent in the second half.

Howard (3-1) heads back on the road Saturday to take on Wessington Springs at 1 p.m. MCM (1-3) will hit the road Tuesday, Dec. 19 and will face Chester at 6 p.m.

* Hanson outscored Menno 36-8 in the first half en route to a 65-16 win. Jayce Slaba led all players with 17 points, while AJ Wilber and Ben Wilber had 16 points and 10 points, respectively, for the Beavers. Bryce Sattler and Trent Guthmiller led the Wolves with four points each.

* A 21-8 second-quarter margin was the difference as Huron defeated Rapid City Central 53-27. Gavin Moeding finished with 12 points while Anderson Porisch had eight points for the Tigers. Junior Allen was the Cobblers' leading-scorer, collecting eight points for the game.

* Nick Hanson's 24-point game led Viborg-Hurley to a 79-35 win over Irene-Wakonda. Owen Niederbaumer finished with 14 points and Brady Schroedermeier collected eight rebounds for the Cougars. Brody Johnke finished with 13 points for the Eagles.

* Dell Rapids St. Mary overcame a 20-2 first-quarter margin to beat Colman-Egan in overtime 55-49. Trevon Beckman finished with a game-high 26 points and five steals, while Maverick LeBrun had 14 points for the Cardinals. Jase Mousel posted a double-double of 24 points and 10 boards for the Hawks.

* A 31-point game from Lane Tietz lifted Groton Area to a 71-54 win over West Central. Keagan Tracy, Ryder Johnson, and Logan Ringgenberg all finished with 11 points apiece for the Tigers. Jake Kuhl led the Trojans with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

* Four Hanson players scored double-digit points in the team's 70-19 win over Menno. Taziah Hawkins had a game-high 19 points and Eliza Oltmanns had 15 points, seven rebounds, and eight steals for the Beavers. Ashton Massey had 14 points, nine rebounds, and a pair of blocks for the Wolves.

* A 23-7 third-quarter margin powered Canistota to a 50-34 victory over Bridgewater-Emery Friday. Natalie Becker had a game-best 19 points, nine rebounds, and three assists, while Ellie Becker finished with six rebounds and six steals for the Hawks. Oakley Weber had 10 points for the Huskies.

* A 15-5 first-quarter run was enough for Parkston to defeat Chamberlain 58-32. Kinsey Evans led the Cubs with 11 points and Jayna Handel finished the game with eight points.

* Behind Aaliyah Jones' 16 points, Rapid City Central defeated Huron 43-39. Vilique Fallis finished with 11 points and Leah Landry had 10 points for the Cobblers. Hylton Heinz and Hamtyn Heinz finished with 11 points each for the Tigers.

* Gabby Wald's game-high 28 points powered Ipswich to a 62-53 victory over Langford. Wald also finished with seven assists, while Kaylin Onken had 10 points and nine rebounds for the Tigers. Megan Gustafson finished with 14 points and six rebounds for the Lions.
