Annie Roshak reaches Ashland women's basketball milestone; Tye Hunt has top NCAA long jump

Hoover High School graduate Annie Roshak continues to climb in the record book with the Ashland women’s basketball team, which is ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II after winning the national championship last season.

The 6-foot-1 forward, a graduate student, is fifth place in career points for the Eagles, but she is close to moving up to third on the all-time list.

Roshak recently collected her 2,000th career point and currently has 2,012. She is four points away from moving up to fourth and needs 66 more points to move into third.

This season, Roshak leads 9-1 Ashland with a 15.1 scoring average. She’s second in rebounding at 6.0 per game and has 14 assists, 11 steals and a team-high 12 blocked shots. She had a season-high 25 points in a 97-71 victory over UIndy on Nov. 11 and 23 points in a 66-62 loss at Ferris State, ranked 10th in Division II, on Dec. 16.

Last season, the Eagles went 37-0 led by Roshak, who earned numerous honors. She was Midwest Region Women’s Student Athlete of the Year, Women’s Basketball Coaches Association first-team All-American and Great Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

Harold Fannin Jr. (McKinley)

The 6-4. 230-pound sophomore tight end wrapped up his season with the Bowling Green football team by catching five passes for 50 yards in the Falcons’ 30-24 loss to Minnesota in the Quick Lane Bowl on Tuesday in Detroit. Fannin Jr., who was named to the first-team All-Mid-American Conference, led Bowling Green (7-6) in receptions with 44 good for 623 yards and six touchdowns. He averaged 14.16 yards per catch. He played in 10 games, missing two because of an injury.

Tye Hunt (Lake)

The Youngstown State senior has the top effort in the indoor long jump in NCAA Division I after the first semester. He earned that by winning the event at the YSU Icebreaker on Dec. 1 in Youngstown. Hunt cleared 26 feet, 6.25 inches on his second effort of the day and then passed on his final four. It was the 13th victory in the long jump in his career with the Penguins. He also has picked up three seconds and five thirds. Hunt has qualified for the NCAA Eastern Regionals twice, both outdoors.

Blake Schaffer (Louisville)

The sophomore picked up his team-best 17th victory of the season for the Kent State wrestling team in its 37-6 loss at Northern Illinois on Dec. 19. Competing at 197 pounds, Schaffer won his match with a 5-3 decision. He is 17-6 this season. He went 3-0 with a technical fall and a decision and earned a victory because of an opponent’s injury as the Golden Flashes went 1-2 in a quad meet on Dec. 17. Schaffer saw limited action as a true freshman.

Sidnee Bowden (McKinley)

The 6-1 freshman, a center/forward, has played in all eight games with seven starts for the Hartford (Conn.) women’s basketball team (6-2. Bowden had a season-high 12 points in a 90-88 victory over Nichols on Nov. 29 and a season-high 12 rebounds in a 53-50 win over Baruch on Nov. 18. Bowden is averaging 5.3 points a game and is second with 6.6 rebounds a game. She also has 13 assists, 12 steals and a team-high 13 blocked shots.

Ben Smith (Hoover)

The redshirt senior for the Cleveland State wrestling team is nationally ranked heading into the Midlands Championship this weekend in Hoffman Estates, Ill. Smith prepped for the meet by scoring a 9-2 decision at 197 pounds for the Vikings in a 25-11 victory at Clarion (Pa.) on Dec. 21. He’s ranked 32nd in the country in his weight class and is 9-3 with three major decisions, a fall and a technical fall. He's qualified for the Division I NCAA Tournament twice before redshirting last season.

Breezie Williams (GlenOak)

The sophomore guard had big back-to-back efforts for the 6-7 New Hampshire women’s basketball team at the Hawk Classic on Dec. 20-21 in Philadelphia. She had 15 points and six assists in a 72-54 loss to host St. Joseph’s and came back with a career-high 20 points, five assists and three steals in a 73-52 win over Wagner the following night. She was 7-for-11 from 3-point range over the two games. Williams is averaging 6.5 points in 13 games (seven starts).

Will Aljancic (Louisville)

The 6-6, 195-pound freshman forward has played in 10 games (five starts) for the 3-7 Findlay men’s basketball team. He has had two big games to date — 25 points and eight rebounds in an 82-69 victory over Truman State on Nov. 10 and 18 points and eight rebounds in a 101-77 win over Cedarville on Dec. 9. Aljancic is second on the team in scoring (9.1). He leads the Oilers in rebounding (5.7) and has seven assists, five steals and five blocked shots.

Nick Everett (West Branch)

The 6-8 senior forward has started all 10 games for the Wooster men’s basketball team (4-6, 1-2 North Coast Athletic Conference). Everett is third on the team in scoring (11.5) and second in rebounding (5.1). He has scored in double figures in seven games highlighted by a career-high 25 points with seven rebounds in a 78-60 victory at Rochester (N.Y.) on Nov. 10.

Aeden Begue (GlenOak)

The junior won his 285-pound match 6-0 to help the Long Island University wrestling team score a 29-3 victory over Edinboro on Dec. 22 in a home bout in Brookville, N.Y. Begue posted a 10-3 victory in a 31-8 win over Bloomsburg on Dec. 9. He is 4-2 in dual matches on the season and one of his losses came against a nationally-ranked opponent. He was 2-0 in the Journeymen Classic on Nov. 12 in Bethlehem, Pa. At GlenOak, Begue posted a 131-36 record with 75 falls.

Zach Schering (Jackson)

The junior diver had a big effort for the Clarion men’s swim team to help the Golden Eagles wrap up the first semester with victories over Indiana (Pa.) and Frostburg State (Md.) in a tri-meet on Dec. 9. Schering won the 3-meter dive with a score of 306.23 and was runner-up to a teammate in the 1-meter dive (268.10). Schering is a three-time Division II All-American, finishing as high as fourth nationally in the 3-meter at the NCAA championships.
