Anna Gray hits a career-high 15 for Bedford; Ida wins with just six girls

TEMPERANCE – Victoria Gray, last year’s Monroe County Region Girls Basketball Player of the Year, didn’t play for Bedford Tuesday night.

But the Mules did just fine without her.

They had another Gray to lean on.

Freshman Anna Gray scored a career-high 15 points to lead Bedford past Ann Arbor Huron 62-32.

“She was solid,” Bedford coach Bill Ryan said. “She got her hands on a lot of balls and rebounded. We like how fearless she is as a freshman.

“We run a lot of things, especially on defense. She is like a sponge. She picks it up and learns quickly.”

Gray got more playing time because her older sister sat out with an ankle injury suffered in practice.

“Almost to the day she hurt it last year,” Ryan said.

Anna Gray stepped into the void.

“Earlier in the season when Victoria sat out a game and was playing with a shoulder brace, Anna had some of her best games,” Ryan said. “She understands the ramifications of Victoria’s absence.”

Nyah Mullins added 13 points and Brooklyn Manard 10 as Bedford (12-1) reeled off its 12th consecutive win.

Ryan was able to return to the bench after missing two games last week after having surgery to install a heart stint.

“It went well,” he said.

“I thought everyone did a nice job  elevating their performance with the team being shorthanded,” said Ida coach Tim Leonard, who praised the work of Alyssa Torres and Rylee Shaffer in picking up the slack.

Ida allowed 10 points in the opening quarter, then never allowed Hillsdale to reach double digits again.

Jessica Schrader handled most of the weight on offense, with 23 points. Clare Allen added 9 for the 10-4 Blue Streaks.

“Clare Allen had one of her better games offensively,” Leonard said.

Ida also took the junior varsity contest 47-31 as Alexa Swiderski scored 18 points and Emily Lambert 12.

Carlson routs Edsel Ford

GIBRALTAR – Abby Carafelli and Brooklyn Kemokai scored 14 points each to lead Gibraltar Carlson to a 57-17 romp over Dearborn Edsel Ford Tuesday night.

“Great defensive effort from our girls,” Carlson coach John Mason said. “We made some halftime adjustments to secure the game in the second half.”

Edsel Ford managed just 5 points in the second half.

It was the fifth win in the last six games for the 9-6 Marauders.

Saline overpowers Monroe

MONROE – Monroe fell into a 33-10 halftime hole and never recovered in a 57-28 loss to a strong Saline team Tuesday night.

Monroe coach Trent Moody saw some bright spots for his team.

“We had long possessions tonight that unfortunately did not end in scores, but the girls are doing things we are looking for,” he said. “The ball was moving around on offense.”

Hayven Neddo hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter and finished with 8 points to lead the 5-10 Trojans.

Trenton pulls away

TRENTON – New Boston Huron was outscored 23-9 in the fourth quarter of a 63-57 loss to Trenton Tuesday night.

The Chiefs managed just two baskets in that final period.

Nina and Gabby Emelian each scored 16 points to pace Huron (8-7). Lila Clements added 13 points.

DUNDEE – Dundee trailed 19-4 after one period and 40-8 at halftime against the Lenawee County Athletic Association leader Blissfield and fell 57-15 Tuesday night.
