Andre Drummond on struggling with mental health: ‘I felt like a robot’

“Little by little, I felt myself crying for help,”

Mental health is a real thing that is starting to become a norm to discuss in professional sports.

For Chicago Bulls center Andre Drummond, he knows all too well on the importance of mental health.

In a recent interview with Chicago Tribune, Drummond spoke on his struggles, which led him to seek help for the first in Dr. Wendy Borlabi, the Bulls’ director of performance and mental health.

“There were times where I’d walk past a mirror and I’d look at myself and feel like — I don’t even know who I’m looking at right now,” Drummond said. “It was just a shell. I felt like a robot. I was just going through the motions, not feeling anything. I felt numb. Practice, go home, workout, repeat. It gets to a point where, damn, this just doesn’t even feel like who I am.”

Drummond missed Chicago’s 121-110 loss against the Los Angeles Lakers on March 29 due to personal reasons, which he spoke on in the following days to the media. “I had to take some time away to really clear my mind and address some things that I’d been neglecting for a while,” Drummond said.

“Talking to a doctor, being consistent with it — it feels good,” Drummond said. “I still have a longer journey to go, but the process has started.”

“There were so many times where I knew what I was feeling, but I chose to neglect it and push it down,” Drummond said. “Now going through this, I know it makes you so much stronger to be able to articulate what you’re feeling.”
