Analyst ‘can’t see (Ian) Jackson pulling the trigger’ on rumors of St. John’s flip from UNC

Earlier this week Rick Pitino was named the head coach at St. John’s, immediately sparking rumors around one UNC basketball commit.

2024 five-star wing Ian Jackson of Cardinal Hayes (New York) High School has been committed to UNC for a few months, but has suddenly heard his name rumored with St. John’s.

And, Pitino is set to visit Jackson next week.

What does that mean? It could be something, but it also could be entirely nothing.

According to Rivals national recruiting director Rob Cassidy, a flip from UNC to St. John’s would be surprising.

“My gut says Jackson will sign with North Carolina based on simple logic as well as the fact that I know first hand how much the recruiting process and the attention that came with it bothered Jackson. I just can’t see him pulling the trigger on something like this and inviting a tsunami of attention that bothered him so much a few months back.

He continued saying a move from North Carolina to St. John’s is a risky bet for the five-star prospect.

“Even with Pitino in the driver’s seat, a flip from North Carolina to St. John’s is a risky proposition, and Jackson isn’t the type of prospect that needs to take that kind of risk. That said, I’ve seen stranger things happen. I wouldn’t dismiss it entirely, but I wouldn’t start losing sleep just yet. Nothing is imminent.”

While there is no firm connection of a potential flip for Jackson to St. John’s, this is definitely a situation to keep monitoring moving forward.

Jackson is part of a four-man 2024 class for UNC at the moment that is currently ranked No. 1 in the 247Sports team rankings.

Jackson is ranked the No. 3 overall prospect in the class.
