Allen teams swat Yellowjackets twice
Jan. 17—ALLEN — The Allen Mustangs erupted for 36 points in the first quarter and swatted Strother 88-43 at home on Saturday.
Coach Greg Mills' club, ranked No. 10 in Class A, improved to 13-1 after its eighth straight victory. Strother dropped to 8-6 on the season.
The Allen girls were equally impressive, limiting Strother to a single point in the entire first half on the way to a convincing 67-5 win.
Coach Dottie Slabaugh's bunch, ranked No. 7 in Class A, stayed unbeaten at 14-0, while the Lady Yellowjackets dropped to 6-8.
Allen will host the Allen Mustang Winter Classic from Thursday through Saturday. The Allen girls are scheduled to meet Tishomingo at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in a first-round affair while the Mustangs are set to take on Coalgate in the 7:45 p.m. late game.
BOYS
Allen 88, Strother 43
The Mustangs led 36-7 after a red-hot first quarter that saw them sink four 3-point baskets. Brayden Tatum scored 12 of his 14 points in Allen's opening salvo.
Allen outscored the Yellowjackets 25-14 in the second period to forge a 61-23 halftime advantage.
Garrett Nix led the way for Allen with 17 points, all in the first half. He hit five 3-point baskets.
Gus Matthews was dominant in the paint, finishing with 14 points. Easton Ledo sank three 3-pointers and scored 11 for the Mustangs. Keith Howard contributed six points in the big AHS first period.
Stone Parker and Jeremiah Lena both scored eight points to pace the Yellowjackets.
GIRLS
Allen 67, Strother 5
As impressive as the Allen boys were in the first half, the Lady Mustangs were at least equally impressive.
Allen started the game on a 32-1 run in the first quarter and then pitched a shutout in the second period, outscoring the Lady Yellowjackets 15-0 to build an incredible 47-1 lead at halftime.
Allen forced 39 turnovers and finished with 27 steals.
The only downside to the game was Allen hitting just 2-of-10 free throws.
Addison Prentice paced Allen with 24 points and sank 4-of-6 3-point field goals. She also had five steals and four assists.
Ava Laden was next with 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Cherish Woodward just missed double figures with nine points and also had eight steals and seven rebounds. Kaylee Davis followed with eight points and six assists for the home team.
