Alabama vs. Georgia score, highlights from SEC championship game: Crimson Tide beats Bulldogs

Alabama football managed to beat what has for the better part of two seasons been an unbeatable team during the SEC championship game.

The Crimson Tide took down No. 1 Georgia in a 27-24 win for SEC Championship honors and legitimizing the Crimson Tide's candidacy for the College Football Playoff.

The Tide leaned on its explosive running game, amounting 114 rushing yards, compared to just 78 from the Bulldogs. Quarterback Jalen Milroe connected on only 13 of his 23 passes but came up with the big chunk plays when it mattered, finding former Bulldog Jermaine Burton for a massive 15-yard touchdown ahead of half time.

Alabama's defense managed to stifle a Georgia offense that has not seen struggles all season like it saw at Mercedes-Benz Stadium against the Crimson Tide. Coach Nick Saban and his defense held Georgia quarterback Carson Beck to just 4 of 12 on third down conversions and pounced on a costly fumble late in the third quarter.

Alabama's win against Georgia marks the Tide's ninth SEC championship under Saban, while Milroe came away with the MVP honors. Alabama now has a fighter's chance to sneak into the postseason, but the Week 2 upset loss to the Texas Longhorns looms large over the Tide.

Touchdown, Georgia: Crimson Tide 27, Georgia 24

6:00 p.m.: On third-and-2, Milroe is swarmed by Georgia defenders and shovels the pass to Bond in the middle of the field. Bond takes it around the outside for 13 yards.

5:59 p.m.: Milroe has ample time in the pocket and hits a wide open Bond for 12 yards on the right sideline.

5:58 p.m.: Roydell Williams blasts through a big hole for a 9-yard pickup.

5:57 p.m.: Alabama only has 21 yards of offense in the second half. On the first play of the drive, Milroe steps back and finds Isaiah Bond for a big gain of 21 yards.

Touchdown, Georgia: Crimson Tide 20, Bulldogs 17

5:53 p.m.: Beck delivers a strike to Ladd McConkey to the 1-yard line, and a quarterback sneak by Beck puts points on the board for Georgia. Alabama not scoring in the red zone on the previous trip comes back to hurt them.

5:50 p.m.: A 42-yard punt return by Anthony Evans III gives the Bulldogs great field position inside Alabama territory.

5:48 p.m.: Milroe does not get rid of the ball fast enough and is brought down by Tramel Walthour for a loss of 12 yards.

5:44 p.m.: Carson Beck's pass on third-and-13 is incomplete to Dillon Bell, as it just slips of the fingers of Alabama cornerback Trey Amos. Georgia will punt.

5:37 p.m.: Beck hits Milton on a checkdown for a short pass, picking up 4 yards to open the drive.

5:33 p.m.: On third-and-9 in the final minute of the third, Milroe is under pressure and cannot connect with Burton. Georgia's defense puts up a huge stand and forces a Will Reichard 24-yard field goal, which is good.

Fumble, Georgia: Crimson Tide 17, Bulldogs 10

5:32 p.m.: Carson Beck's hand off to Dillon Bell on the end-around play is fumbled and Alabama recovers to put the Crimson Tide in the red zone.

5:15 p.m.: Two Crimson Tide defenders are down in Dallas Turner and Kool-Aid McKinstry.

5:10 p.m.: Beck airs it out long to Arian Smith for 51 yards, the first explosive play of the game. The play is being reviewed to see if Smith lost control of the football. Georgia is down at the Alabama 19-yard line.

5:07 p.m.: Milroe looks for Niblack but underthrows the football. Good coverage by Georgia's Starks and it's a quick three-and-out for Alabama.

5:05 p.m.: On the first play of the drive, Milroe hands it off to Williams for a short gain.

5:01 p.m.: Cornerback Terrion Arnold sees the run coming and makes a stellar tackle in the backfield on third down to force another Georgia punt. That is an ideal start to the half for the Crimson Tide.

4:20 p.m.: The sack brings up third-and-21, and Milroe gets a big chunk of the yardage needed finding Amari Niblack to bring up a fourth-and-4 at the Georgia 37-yard line.

4:18 p.m.: Milroe is sacked for the first time today by Warren Brinson for a loss of 12 yards. Milroe held on to the ball for a while looking for a receiver before Brinson got a hold of his foot and dragged the quarterback down.

4:16 p.m.: On third-and-2, Jam Miller pushes his way for a first down, shedding two tackles.

4:15 p.m.: Milroe keeps the football and takes it the edge, very close to a first down.

4:14 p.m.: Milroe takes a deep shot to Burton but underthrows the ball, forcing a pass interference call on Malaki Starks.

4:10 p.m.: Dallas Turner gets his ninth sack of the year on a Georgia third down, forcing a field goal try. A false start moves the ball back five yards, making it a 50-yarder. Peyton Woodring's kick comes off the right post and is no good.

4:08 p.m.: Linebacker Deontae Lawson trips up Kendall Milton for a 2-yard loss.

Touchdown, Alabama: Crimson Tide 10, Bulldogs 7

3:57 p.m.: Milroe finds Jam Miller on a wheel route down the left sideline for a 28-yard touchdown. Nice design by Alabama to create traffic in the middle of the field, opening the sideline up for Miller. That's the 22nd touchdown for Milroe this season. Alabama goes 92 yards in 10 plays to take the lead.

3:56 p.m.: On a crucial fourth down, Milroe hands it off to Williams for 3yards and a first down.

3:35 p.m.: Alabama's offensive line creates a whole for Jam Miller to pick up 8 yards.

3:32 p.m.: Beck looks for Bowers with Caleb Downs in coverage on third-and-13, but Downs plays great coverage and forces a punt. Great answer by the Alabama defense, and the Crimson Tide have great field positioning for the upcoming drive.

3:29 p.m.: Malachi Moore makes a big tackle on Bowers on a first-down throw, a tackle for a 3-yard loss.

3:16 p.m.: Beck runs play-action and finds star tight-end Brock Bowers for a 23-yard pickup.
