Alabama football transfer portal tracker: Roster reshaped with departing players, additions

Alabama football offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien called the transfer portal similar to free agency but without the rules.

Plenty of college football players are testing out the relatively new tool to look for other options. Alabama has some, too, but most are depth players.

And the Crimson Tide is using the portal to its advantage. Ahead of the 2021 season, Alabama added starters in Henry To'o To'o (Tennessee) and Jameson Williams (Ohio State). The Crimson Tide has already gained a few players through the portal who could make similar impacts in 2022.

Entering the transfer portal doesn't guarantee a player will transfer, but other programs are allowed to contact them.

Here's a look at the players who have entered their name and those the Crimson Tide has added.

Transferring out (26)

Tight end Jahleel Billingsley: The junior entered the 2021 offseason with promise, but he started the fall in Nick Saban's doghouse before a season marred with inconsistency. He caught 17 receptions for 256 yards and three touchdowns. Transferred to Texas.

Quarterback Paul Tyson: The great grandson of Paul "Bear" Bryant served as Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young's backup in 2021. He will look to head somewhere he can compete for the starting job. Transferred to Arizona State.

Edge King Mwikuta: He entered his name in the transfer portal ahead of the 2021 season but never left. The junior served as a reserve linebacker, making perhaps his greatest contribution when he recovered a blocked punt against Texas A&M. Transferred to Arkansas State.

Cornerback Marcus Banks: He entered the transfer portal in November and could have probably seen significant snaps if he hadn't. Alabama was decimated at cornerback late in the season with injuries. Banks' most significant contribution came in the Mercer game when he intercepted a pass. Transferred to Mississippi State.

Wide receiver Xavier Williams: He didn't play in 2021 after catching three passes for 24 yards in 2020. He entered his name in the portal on Nov. 12. Transferred to Utah State.

Offensive lineman Pierce Quick: He saw time in only one game this season as a reserve offensive lineman from Trussville. He also played in three games in 2020. Transferred to Georgia Tech.

Linebacker Jackson Bratton: He didn't see any playing time in his two seasons with Alabama. Bratton, a Muscle Shoals graduate, was a four-star recruit in high school. Transferred to UAB.

Edge Drew Sanders: Sanders took over the starting job opposite of Will Anderson Jr. once Christopher Allen went down. But then Sanders suffered a hand injury that forced him to miss time and resulted in him losing the starting job to freshman Dallas Turner. Sanders is a former five-star recruit. Transferred to Arkansas.

Running back Kyle Edwards: He entered the transfer portal back in June after not playing during his freshman season in 2020. He finally landed in a new spot in January. Transferred to Southeastern Louisiana.

Offensive lineman Tommy Brown: The redshirt junior started in one game at right guard in 2021, filling in at left guard against New Mexico State. He appeared in 10 games total. Transferred to Colorado.

Receiver Javon Baker: The sophomore receiver saw time in 11 games this season, catching seven passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. He was buried in the depth chart at receiver, primarily serving in a reserve role. He also played in nine games as a freshman in 2020. Transferred to Kentucky.

Linebacker Shane Lee: The junior saw time in 10 games, recording six tackles, a half sack and a quarterback hurry. Like Moody, he was another upperclassmen who sat behind Harris and To'o To'o. Transferred to USC.

Receiver DJ Rias: The sophomore walk-on did not see playing time in 2021.

Defensive back Brylan Lanier: The freshman walk-on from Paul W. Bryant High School did not play in 2021. Transferred to Indiana.

Quarterback Braxton Barker: The son of national-championship-winning quarterback Jay Barker, the redshirt junior saw time in only one game during his four years with the Crimson Tide. He completed one pass for 10 yards in his appearance this past season against New Mexico State. Joined UA staff as grad assistant.

Quarterback Stone Hollenbach: Also a walk-on like Barker, Hollenbach has not seen any playing time over three seasons with the Crimson Tide. Transferred to Western Michigan.

Punter Ty Perine: He served as the starter at punter in 2019. Perine was a backup in 2021.

Running back Camar Wheaton: The five-star freshman running back did not see the field in 2021. He missed time with a meniscus injury. Transferred to Southern Methodist University.

Defensive lineman Keelan Cox: He did not receive any playing time in 2021. Transferred to Wyoming.

Long snapper Carter Short: The Hoover native didn't see any playing time during his freshman season.

Tight end Caden Clark: He did not see playing time in 2021 and was not listed on the spring roster but now is in the portal, according to reports. Clark was a 3-star tight end, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Wide receiver Agiye Hall: He showed promise in the spring before his freshman season, but his time with the Crimson Tide derailed from there. Saban announced Hall's suspension for violating team rules the day before the sophomore entered his name in the portal. Transferred to Texas.

Defensive lineman Stephon Wynn Jr.: The redshirt senior saw time in seven games as a reserve defensive lineman while receiving 82 snaps during the 2021 season before submitting his name to be entered in the transfer portal. Wynn registered five tackles and a quarterback hurry during those seven games. Transferred to Nebraska.

Defensive back Kaine Williams: The redshirt freshman only saw snaps in the last game of the season when he played on special teams against Georgia. He is a former four-star recruit. Transferred to Nebraska.

Quarterback Blake Jarrett: The sophomore walk-on entered the portal after transferring to Alabama this offseason.

Offensive lineman Dayne Shor: The former 3-star 2022 recruit was an early enrollee this spring from Alpharetta, Georgia. The Tuscaloosa News can confirm his name is in the portal as of May 5. Transferred to Connecticut.

Transferring in (5)

Cornerback Eli Ricks (LSU): The former third-team All-American had a strong freshman season in 2020. He knows Young well from their time in California. Ricks played in five games in 2021, finishing with 11 tackles, one interception and one pass defense. The prior season he picked off four passes and returned two for touchdowns.

Running back Jahmyr Gibbs (Georgia Tech): With starter Brian Robinson Jr. headed to the draft, Alabama adds a quality running back to its room for 2022. Gibbs averaged 5.22 yards per carry for the Yellow Jackets this season. A four-star prospect in 2020, Gibbs is listed at 5-11, 200 pounds.

Wide receiver Jermaine Burton (Georgia): Alabama adds Georgia's most productive player at the receiver spot from this past season. The 6-foot, 200-pound Burton caught 26 passes for 497 yards and five touchdowns in 2021. Burton finished second among the Bulldogs in receiving yards and touchdowns, behind only tight end Brock Bowers. Burton's longest reception went for 73 yards.

Offensive lineman Tyler Steen (Vanderbilt): Alabama added a veteran tackle as it looks to replace both of its starters. Steen started 33 games over three seasons with the Commodores. He played left tackle for two seasons and right tackle in 2019.

Wide receiver Tyler Harrell (Louisville): Bringing in Harrell means adding elite speed to an offense that lost Jameson Williams to the NFL Draft. Harrell was clocked at 4.24 in the 40-yard dash at a Louisville pro day in 2021. He will be a welcomed addition to stretch the field for the Crimson Tide.
