Akron RubberDucks results: Ducks lose in 10 innings to Curve in regular-season finale

The RubberDucks closed out the 2023 regular season with a 4-3 loss to the Altoona Curve in 10 innings Sunday night at Canal Park. Four Ducks relievers struck out six over five innings, but Altoona scored a run in the top of the 10th to pull out the win.

The Ducks finished 65-73 overall in the Eastern League, including 30-39 in the second half.

The Curve took advantage of the runner on second to open extra innings. Tsung-Che Cheng advanced to third on a flyout and scored on a passed ball two batters later.

Ducks reliever Bradley Hanner (8-6) allowed one unearned run over two innings with two strikeouts.

With the Ducks trailing 3-1 in the eighth, Milan Tolentino worked a two-out walk and Micael Ramirez singled before Joe Naranjo brought both home on a double over the head of the Curve centerfielder to tie the score 3-3.

Chase DeLauter hit a single to finish the season with an 11-game hitting streak, and Aaron Bracho had a sacrifice fly.

Saturday's result: Korey Holland, Joe Donovan lead Ducks over Curve

Korey Holland was a single shy of hitting for the cycle and Joe Donovan drove in four runs to lead the RubberDucks to a 9-2 victory over the Altoona Curve Saturday night in Akron.

Akron’s offense got rolling early. Holland opened the second inning with a single before advancing to third on Bryce Ball’s single. Donovan doubled into the gap to score both and put the Ducks ahead 2-1. Three batters later, Petey Halpin singled to score Donovan for a 3-1 lead.

Ducks starter Jack Leftwich (6-7) and worked 5⅔ innings for the win. Relievers Randy Labaut (2⅓ innings, 0 runs, 2 strikeouts) and Jordan Jones (1 inning, 0 runs, 2 strikeouts) closed it out.

Donovan's two-run double keyed a three-run sixth to push the Ducks' lead to 6-2, and Holland hit his seventh home run of the season in three-run seventh to put the game out of reach.

Donovan's first multi-RBI game with Akron included two doubles, and Ball went 2-for-4 with a double.

The Ducks close out the regular season at 6:05 p.m. Sunday at Canal Park.

Friday's result: Curve scores late to beat Ducks

The Altoona Curve broke a scoreless tie with a four-run eighth inning and beat the RubberDucks 4-0 Friday night at Canal Park.

Three throwing errors, including two by Akron relief pitcher Franco Aleman, made all four Curve runs unearned.

Starting pitcher Will Dion and reliever Tanner Burns held Altoona scoreless through seven innings. Dion struck out eight in six innings before Burns pitched the seventh. Aleman faced seven batters and only recorded one out, a strikeout. Trey Benton came on in the eighth and pitched 1⅔ innings without giving up a run.

The final regular-season weekend series continues Saturday night in Akron.

Thursday's result: Aaron Bracho belts 3-run home run in Ducks win over Curve

The RubberDucks snapped a two-game skid with a 7-1 win over the visiting Altoona Curve Thursday night at Canal Park.

Keyed by Aaron Bracho's three-run home run, the Ducks erupted for six runs in the fifth to pull away. It was the 18th home run of the season for Bracho, who also added a single.

Ducks starter Hunter Stanley pitched six shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out four to earn the victory.

The six-game series continues Friday.

Wednesday's result: Triston McKenzie strikes out four in three innings in rehab start

For the second straight night, the RubberDucks bullpen faltered behind a solid outing from a Guardians starter making a rehab start in a 7-5 loss to the Altoona Curve at Canal Park on Wednesday.

Triston McKenzie delivered three dominant innings in his first rehab start for the Ducks, striking out four and allowing one run on one hit. Two innings later, Doug Nikhazy (4-8) gave up six runs on four hits and three walks in just ⅔ of an inning.

Joe Naranjo led the offense, going 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Chase DeLauter added a double and a run of his own for the Ducks (63-71). Juan Brito went 1-for-3 with two walks and two RBI.

Tuesday's result: Bieber strikes out four in hitless rehab outing

Shane Bieber tossed 3⅔ hitless innings in his first rehab appearance with the RubberDucks but the offense could not help out enough in a 3-2 loss to Altoona at Canal Park on Tuesday.

Bieber did allow two runs thanks to a walk, two hit batters and two errors behind him. He struck out four and avoided the loss. Ross Carver came on in relief for the final 5⅓ innings, striking out six but allowing the game-winning run in the eighth inning.

Joe Naranjo and Connor Kokx slapped back-to-back singles in the fourth inning to provide all the scoring for the Ducks (63-70).

Sunday's result: Brito's solo home run snaps Ducks' five-game skid

Juan Brito's solo home run in the ninth inning broke a scoreless tie and gave the visiting RubberDucks a 1-0 victory over the Richmond Flying Squirrels in a thrilling pitchers duel on Sunday afternoon.

The Ducks (63-69) only managed three hits for the game, but Brito had the only one that mattered. The home run was his 10th of the season and he also added his 20th double of the year.

Starting pitcher Jack Leftwich went five innings and gave up one hit and two walks while striking out five. Will Dion (3-2) tossed 3⅔ innings of scoreless relief to grab the win, striking out two. Franco Aleman locked down the final out for his seventh save and his 18th consecutive scoreless appearance.

Saturday's result: Ducks lose fifth straight

The Richmond Flying Squirrels handed the RubberDucks their fifth consecutive loss Saturday night with a 5-4 win in Virginia.

Akron designated hitter Bryce Ball homered twice, while center fielder Petey Halpin added a solo home run, but it wasn't enough as the Flying Squirrels took the lead in the eight inning to win the fifth game of a 6-game series.

After Ball’s second homer tied the game 4-4 in the eighth inning, Richmond responded in the bottom of the inning against reliever Trey Benton. Brady Whalen hit a leadoff single and went to second base on a passed ball by catcher Michael Berglund. Andy Thomas then hit a RBI single to for a 5-4 Richmond lead.

Benton suffered the loss and fell to 1-4 on the season. Juan Zapata went 4-1/3 innings in his AA debut for Akron. Zapata struck out one, allowed nine hits and four runs - three earned.

Friday's result: Ducks blasted by Flying Squirrels in Richmond

Aaron Bracho had four RBI but it wasn't close to being enough for the visiting RubberDucks in a 13-7 loss to the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Friday night.

The Squirrels scored 11 runs in the first three innings to extend their win streak to six games.

Ducks starter Hunter Stanley was removed with two outs in the first inning with Richmond already leading 4-0. Davis Sharpe relieved and pitched into the third inning, but allowed a two-run home run in the second inning and a grand slam in the third to make it 11-2.

The Ducks scored twice in the third inning and four times in the fourth, including Bracho's three-run double to right field, to pull within 11-6. Bracho then hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth to make it 12-7.

Thursday's result: Flying Squirrels score late to beat Ducks

The Flying Squirrels scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to break a 5-5 and went on to defeat the RubberDucks 6-5 Thursday in Richmond, Va.

Logan Wyatt singled home Ismael Munguia off Ducks reliever Bradley Hanner for the game-winner.

Akron (62-67) got runners on second and third with one out in the ninth before Richmond closer Ben Madison recorded a strikeout and a groundout to earn his second save of the season and kept the Squirrels second in the Eastern League's Southwest Division.

Juan Brito and Joe Donovan each had two hits for the Ducks, who outhit the Flying Squirrels 8-5 in the game.

Wednesday's result: Ducks drop extra-innings heartbreaker on throwing error

A throwing error on a sacrifice bunt cost the RubberDucks a heartbreaking 5-4 loss in 10 innings to the Flying Squirrels on Wednesday night in Richmond.

After the Ducks (62-66) scored two runs on Michael Berglund's home run in the ninth to send it to extras, reliever Franco Aleman (2-1) uncorked a wild throw that allowed Shane Matheny to score and the Squirrels to walk it off. Despite the loss, Aleman's ERA remained a perfect 0.00 in 17 appearances.

Milan Tolentino got the Ducks on the board in the fourth inning with a double to score Bryce Ball before coming around to score on a single by Joe Naranjo.

Tuesday's result: Ducks lineup sputters in loss to Flying Squirrels

The Richmond Flying Squirrels drilled three extra base hits to score all their runs in a 4-2 series-opening win over the RubberDucks at The Diamond on Tuesday night.

The Ducks (62-65) scored their runs in the ninth inning on a wild pitch and a fielding error as the lineup never got much going. Petey Halpin and Korey Holland each ripped a double for the Ducks, who finished with just six hits.

Will Dion (2-4) was stuck with the tough-luck loss, allowing one run on two hits and no walks with eight strikeouts in five solid innings.

Sunday's result: Michael Berglund hits grand slam to lead Ducks past Baysox

Michael Berglund hit a grand slam to cap a five-run eighth inning and power the RubberDucks to a 6-3 comeback win over the Bowie Baysox on Sunday night at Canal Park.

Michael Kelly tossed a scoreless inning of relief in his rehab appearance with the Ducks (62-64).

Akron's comeback in the eighth started when Aaron Bracho was hit by a pitch. Korey Holland then worked a walk and Milan Tolentino hit a single to load the bases. Joe Naranjo walked to score Bracho and bring Akron within a run at 3-2. Berglund followed with a grand slam into the Cutwater Tiki Terrace beyond the right field fence to put the RubberDucks ahead for the first time in the game.

Hunter Stanley started on the mound for Akron and allowed one run over his first five innings. The right-hander surrendered a single and a walk to open the sixth before departing. Reliever Erik Sabrowski allowed a single to score a run before getting a double play and a strikeout to end the inning. Kelly followed with a scoreless inning, Tanner Burns (5-3) allowed a run in one inning and Franco Aleman pitched a scoreless ninth for his sixth save.

Akron's Bryce Ball hit a two-out solo home run to tie the score at 1-1 in the third inning.

Saturday's result: Bracho homers again but Ducks lose to Baysox

Both teams scored all its runs in the first inning but the RubberDucks fell to the visiting Baysox 4-2 on Saturday night at Canal Park.

Jud Fabian hit a three-run home run off Ducks starter Tommy Mace (4-5) to start the scoring before Greg Cullen singled home Billy Cook later in the inning to account for all four runs.

Aaron Bracho drilled a two-run home run for the second straight game for the Ducks (61-64).

Friday's result: Aaron Bracho's home run propels Ducks over Baysox

Aaron Bracho's two-run home run in the eighth inning propelled the RubberDucks to a come-from-behind 6-5 Eastern League win Friday night at Canal Park.

After erasing the Baysox's 3-0 lead with a four-run fifth inning, the Ducks needed to rally from a run down in the eighth. Bowie took a 5-4 lead with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to set up Bracho's 16th homer of the season, hit to right-center field to also scored Juan Brito.

The late-game heroics allowed reliever Erik Sabrowski (4-0) to pick up the win with an inning of relief. Franco Aleman pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out two, to pick up save No. 5

Josh Naylor, in a rehab start from the Guardians, played seven innings at first base and went 2-for-4 with two singles and a RBI.

Thursday's result: Joe Naranjo's home run lifts Ducks over Baysox

Joe Naranjo hit a go-ahead solo home run in the seventh inning to lift the RubberDucks to a 4-3 win over the Bowie Baysox on Thursday night at Canal Park.

Josh Naylor hit a single and Michael Kelly struck out two in their rehab appearances from the Guardians.

Naranjo, who entered the game for defense in the top of the seventh, made his only at-bat of the night count as he launched his third home run of the season to put the Ducks (60-63) on top.

Ross Carver started and worked four innings for the Ducks, allowing three runs while striking out five. Trey Benton entered the game in the fifth with two on and no out and got a flyout and double play to escape the jam without damage. Kelly then worked a perfect sixth with two strikeouts, Jordan Jones fired a scoreless seventh and Tanner Burns worked two perfect innings to earn his first career save.

Wednesday's result: Leftwich gives up three as Ducks lose 5-2

The Baysox took the lead early and never looked back in a wire-to-wire 5-2 victory over the RubberDucks at Canal Park on Wednesday.

Starting pitcher Jack Leftwich gave up single runs in each of the first three innings to dig an early hole for the Ducks (59-63). He gave up three hits, walked two and struck out three in the loss that dropped his record to 5-7.

Scoring the only runs for the Ducks were Korey Holland who tripled in Angel Martinez and Joe Naranjo who singled home Joe Donovan. Martinez added a triple of his own.

Tuesday's result: Josh Naylor rips a single and scores in rehab appearance win

Big innings led the RubberDucks to a 7-5 victory in the series opener at Canal Park on Tuesday night.

The Ducks (59-62) only scored in two innings, but they were crooked numbers with a four-run third inning and a three-run sixth. A pair of singles by Connor Kokx and rehabbing Josh Naylor tied the game at 2-2 in the third inning before Juan Brito blasted a double to score Naylor and Petey Halpin and take a 4-2 lead.

In the sixth, another Brito double plated Joe Naranjo before singles from Korey Holland and Milan Tolentino put the Ducks up 7-4.

Bradley Hanner (8-4) took the win in relief, tossing two scoreless innings and striking out three. Davis Sharpe closed down the ninth for his third save to preserve the win.

Sunday's result: Angel Martinez drills grand slam to spark Ducks win

Angel Martinez hit a grand slam and the RubberDucks used a five-run third inning to cruise to a 9-2 victory at Altoona on Sunday afternoon.

Juan Brito was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the score at 1-1 before Martinez launched a grand slam home run to left field to put the Ducks (58-62) up 5-1. Brito proceeded to drive in four more runs over the seventh and eighth innings on a two-run home run and a double to right field to finish with five RBIs.

Tanner Burns (4-3) pitched 1⅓ innings of perfect relief. Erik Sabrowski and Jordan Jones finished off the final three scoreless innings, combining for three strikeouts.

Saturday's result: Ducks snap 6-game skid with late win over Curve

The Akron RubberDucks scored four first-inning runs off right-hander Paul Skenes in his Double-A debut and retook the lead in the seventh and eighth innings, but the Altoona Curve rallied and won, 9-8, on a ninth-inning, walk-off infield single by catcher Carter Bins to take the fifth game of a six-game series at Peoples Natural Gas Field Saturday night.

Akron led, 8-7, entering the bottom of the ninth, when Altoona shortstop Tsung-Che Cheng led off with a popup double down the left-field line, and center fielder Matt Gorski grounded a game-tying double down the right-field line against right-handed reliever Davis Sharpe. Designated hitter Joe Perez singled, putting runners at first and third bases, before right fielder Matt Fraizer was intentionally walked. Sharpe then struck out second baseman Andres Alvarez and got left fielder Connor Scott on an infield fly, but Bins hit a grounder off Sharpe’s foot and beat the pitcher’s throw to first base.

Akron left-hander Doug Nikhazy allowed a pair of first-inning runs on an error, two hits and an obstruction call, bringing Altoona within 4-2. He allowed three more runs in the second on a walk and three hits. Right-hander Mason Hickman quieted Altoona for a 3-1/3 scoreless, hitless innings with one walk and three strikeouts. Tyler Thornton pitched 1-1/3 innings, allowing a game-tying 2-run homer to Perez in the seventh. Right-hander Trey Benton got two outs in the seventh. Sharpe worked a perfect eighth inning before the Curve’s winning rally in the ninth.

RubberDucks left fielder Petey Halpin led off the game with a single against Skenes, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft last month. After a walk to shortstop Milan Tolentino, third baseman Aaron Bracho hit a 1-out RBI single, and right fielder Korey Holland added a RBI double. First baseman Joe Naranjo walked with two outs, ending Skenes’ start after seven batters. Catcher Michael Berglund drew a bases-loaded walk, and a wild pitch by reliever Noe Toribio scored another run to make it 4-0. In the seventh, second baseman Juan Brito singled, Bracho walked for the third time in the game and Holland singled to load the bases. Naranjo had a game-tying groundout, and Berglund hit a go-ahead, 2-run single for a 7-5 RubberDucks lead. In the eighth, designated hitter Bryce Ball drew a bases-loaded walk for an 8-7 Akron advantage. Halpin, Tolentino, and Holland each had two hits in the game.

The Ducks fell six games behind Bowie in the Southwest Division second-half playoff race. Altoona leads the season series with Akron, 6-5.

Connor Kokx blasted a tie-breaking home run in the ninth inning and the RubberDucks ended a six-game skid ended with a 5-4 win over the Curve Friday night in Altoona, Pa.

Bradley Hanner (7-4) pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Franco Aleman earned his fourth save with a scoreless ninth after Kokx's solo home run.

Kokx hit his third homer of the season to left field to put Akron up 5-4. Four of the Ducks' six hits went for extra bases. Joe Naranjo hit a two-run home run in the fifth to erase the Curve's 2-0 lead.

Juan Brito singled and doubled for the Ducks, and Aaron Bracho drove in two runs to tie the score 4-4 in the eighth and set up Kokx's game-winner.

Thursday result: Ducks losing skid hits 6 with 10-inning loss to Curve

The host Altoona Curve handed the RubberDucks their sixth consecutive loss, 2-1 in 10 innings Thursday night.

The game was scoreless through nine innings, but the Curve used three bunts and a walk-off sacrifice fly in the 10th after the Ducks scored a run in top of the inning.

Ducks reliever Jack Leftwich (5-6) took the loss. He got the final two outs of the sixth inning and retired the first eight batters he faced before consecutive hits started the ninth inning. With the winning run at third base, he struck out three straight hitters to send the game to extra innings.

Wednesday's result: Offense sputters in loss to Curve

The lineup sputtered again as the RubberDucks dropped their fifth straight game, 8-1 Wednesday at Altoona.

Hunter Stanley (3-10) allowed three runs on six hits and two walks over 4⅔ innings. The defense committing four errors did not help matters as the next three relievers combined to give up five more runs.

Cesar Idrogo recorded a double in two hits and scored a run for the RubberDuck (56-60). Joe Naranjo singled to score Idrogo in the fourth inning to provide the lone run.

Tuesday's result: Altoona roughs up Mace as Ducks fall 9-2

RubberDucks starter Tommy Mace was roughed up for eight runs in three innings as the Ducks dropped the series opener at Altoona 9-2 on Tuesday.

Mace (4-4) gave up three walks and eight hits including two home runs in the loss. The only bright spots were a 2-for-4 effort from Petey Halpin and a solo home run from Aaron Bracho in the second inning. Milan Tolentino drove in Joe Naranjo with a sacrifice fly in the third to account for the other Ducks (56-59) run.

Sunday's result: Korey Holland blasts two home runs in Ducks loss to SeaWolves

Korey Holland hit two home runs but it wasn't enough as the Erie SeaWolves downed the RubberDucks 8-6 Sunday at Canal Park.

Erie scored three runs in the sixth to tie the score 6-6 before Chris Meyers blasted a two-run homer to center in the seventh to give the SeaWolves the lead for good.

Erie scored three times against Ducks starter Doug Nikhazy in the second inning, but Nikhazy didn't allow another run through five innings. Trey Benton came on in relief and allowed three unearned runs in the sixth as the SeaWolves rallied, and Bradley Hanner (6-4) surrendered Meyers' home run to take the loss.

Akron answered the SeaWolves' early runs in the fourth inning, when Bryce Ball led off with a single and scored on Holland's towering home run into the bullpen that cut Erie’s lead to 3-2. After back-to-back singles by Joe Donovan and Cesar Idrogo, Gabriel Rodriguez lined a two-run double off the wall in left to give the Ducks a 4-3 lead.

In the fifth, Ball drew a two-out walk and Holland followed with his second two-run home run to make it 6-3. It was the first multi-homer game of Holland's career.

Donovan went 3-for-4 to lead the Ducks' 12-hit effort. Erie totalled eight hits.

Saturday's result: Ducks lose lead late in 6-2 defeat

A huge six-run seventh inning gave the Erie SeaWolves a 6-2 comeback victory over the RubberDucks at Canal Park on Saturday.

Juan Brito launched a two-run home run in the first inning to put the Ducks ahead 2-0. Ross Carver gave a dominant start through six inning to hold the lead before the bullpen lost control. Carver gave up one run on one hit — to the last batter he faced — and struck out 12.

Davis Sharpe (7-4) blew the save and the lead, giving up three runs on three hits, including two home runs. Tyler Thornton followed and gave up two runs to provide the final score.

Friday's results: Ducks-SeaWolves split doubleheader

The RubberDucks and Erie SeaWolves split a doubleheader of seven-inning games Friday at Canal Park.

The Ducks won the opener 2-1 with a two-run fifth inning. The second game, won 6-4 by Erie, was a makeup game from Thursday's rainout.

Bryce Ball's solo home run leading off the fifth inning tied the opener 1-1. Two outs later, Petey Halpin doubled home Connor Kokx for the go-ahead run.

Bradley Hanner (6-3) picked up the win in relief of Will Dion. Hanner allowed one hit and walked two in 2⅔ innings.

The SeaWolves scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings of the nightcap to erase the Ducks' 4-2 lead and split the doubleheader.Jake Holton's two-run homer off Akron reliever Mason Hickman (4-4) tied it at 4-4.

Before Hickman exited in the with nobody out, he gave up a single and walk. Tanner Burns came on and walked the bases loaded before Luis Santana singled in two runs for a 6-4 lead.

Thursday's result: Ducks game rained out; doubleheader on Friday

The Akron RubberDucks and Erie SeaWolves game on Thursday was postponed due to rain and will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Friday at Canal Park. The first game will start at 5:05 p.m.

Wednesday's result: Ducks lose heartbreaker 7-6 in extras

The RubberDucks failed to execute in extra innings, losing 7-6 in 11 innings to Erie at Canal Park on Wednesday.

Five of the Ducks' nine hits went for extra bases, but they could not deliver timely hits in the 11th as Joe Donovan popped up his sacrifice bunt attempt and extra runner Gabriel Rodriguez was doubled off second base. Connor Kokx struck out swinging to end the game.

Korey Holland and Aaron Bracho produced three runs for the Ducks (55-55) with Holland going 3-for-4 including a double and Bracho launching a solo home run and scoring an additional run.

The Ducks used seven pitchers in the contest with Trey Benton (1-3) taking the loss after allowing three runs over the 10th and 11th innings. However, the pitching staff did combine to record 19 of the 33 outs via strikeout.

Tuesday's result: Ducks get 4-2 win in Quantrill's rehab start

Bryce Ball and Micael Ramirez delivered back-to-back hits in the bottom of the eighth to break a tie ballgame and push the RubberDucks to a 4-2 victory over the Erie SeaWolves in the series opener at Canal Park on Tuesday night.

With the game tied 2-2, Ball lined a single to right field to drive in Korey Holland and Ramirez followed with a double to center that scored Ball.

Ball was involved in every scoring play for the Ducks (55-54) as he also scored a run in the fifth inning off a Connor Kokx single and then singled home Holland in the sixth.

Cal Quantrill got the start in a rehab appearance and went 3⅔ innings, giving up one run on four hits and a walk. He struck out four and came away with a no-decision. Tommy Mace (4-3) tossed 4⅓ innings of solid relief to earn the win and Bradley Hanner locked down a scoreless ninth to earn his eighth save.

Sunday's result: Ducks fall behind early in series-finale loss to Senators

The RubberDucks never recovered from a rough first inning in an 8-3 loss to the Senators in a series finale Sunday afternoon in Harrisburg.

Starting pitcher Doug Nikhazy (4-7) didn't even make it out of the first inning, giving up four runs on four hits and two walks while recording just one out. Matt Turner relieved Nikhazy and gave up three more runs in the third inning to put the Ducks (54-54) in a 7-0 hole.

Juan Brito finally put the Ducks on the board in the eighth with a double that scored Connor Kokx. Korey Holland followed with a single to plate Brito. Kokx singled home Gabriel Rodriguez in the ninth for the final tally.

Saturday's result: Ducks comeback falls short in 5-4 loss

The RubberDucks attempted a comeback but it was too little, too late in a 5-4 loss at Harrisburg on Saturday night.

Petey Halpin and Aaron Bracho did all they could for the Ducks (54-53), both going 3-for-4 with Halpin adding an RBI and stolen base and Bracho drilling a double and a solo home run while scoring twice.

The deficit was too large though, as starting pitcher Ross Carver (1-4) allowed five runs on five hits and three walks in 4⅔ innings.

Friday's result: Ducks down Senators 5-3 to snap 3-game skid

Akron shortstop Juan Brito hit a go-ahead, 2-run home run, and second baseman Aaron Bracho added a solo shot in a 3-run eighth inning, while Will Dion and reliever Jack Leftwich combined to give the RubberDucks a 5-3 win Friday night, snapping a 3-game losing streak against the Harrisburg Senators .

With the Ducks trailing, 3-2, center fielder Connor Kokx drilled a leadoff double to the top of the left-field wall, where fan interference placed Kokx at second base. Brito followed by hitting a 2-run homer for Akron’s first lead since the first inning Tuesday. Two batters later, Bracho drilled a solo home run to right field to make it 5-3 in favor of the Ducks.

Dion allowed a first-inning run when left fielder Robert Hassell III reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on third baseman Trey Lipscomb’s RBI double to left-center field. Dion induced double plays in each of the next two innings and pitched a perfect fourth. In the fifth, he allowed a walk and another RBI single by Lipscomb to make it 2-0. Dion finished five innings, allowing seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Leftwichstarted in the sixth inning and allowed a seventh-inning run on one hit and two groundouts, before retiring eight of the last 10 batters to work the final four innings. He struck out four batters while allowing one walk and two hits, earning his first win since June 3.

The RubberDucks dropped their third consecutive game of a six-game series in Harrisburg, Pa., 5-2 Thursday night to the Senators.

Harrisburg put four runs on the board in the third inning on a triple, error, single and a two-run home run by James Wood. The Senators added their fifth run in the fifth on a solo home run by Robert Hassell.

All five runs were earned and charged to Ducks starter Hunter Stanley (3-9), gave up six hits, one walk and struck out six in five innings. Three Ducks relievers allowed just three hits and no walks while holding the Senators scoreless in the final three innings.

The Ducks scored single runs in each of the eighth and ninth innings, with Aaron Bracho leading off the ninth with 11th home run of the season. Cesar Idrogo added a single, double and scored a run.

Wednesday's result: Ducks manage just three hits in loss to Senators

The RubberDucks had another rough night at the plate, managing only three hits Wednesday in an 8-0 loss at Harrisburg.

Only Juan Brito, Michael Berglund and Gabriel Rodriguez slapped singles for the Ducks (53-51), who were shut out for the third time in their last five games.

Tommy Mace (3-3) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs on eight hits and a walk.

Tuesday's result: Three errors cost Ducks the series opener in 4-3 loss

Three errors and a wild pitch cost the RubberDucks in a 4-3 loss at Harrisburg on Tuesday night in the series opener.

The error that lost the game came in the fifth inning, when Senators center fielder James Wood ripped his second double of the game to left field but Connor Kokx misplayed the ball and allowed Trey Lipscomb to score and make it 4-3.

Juan Brito went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and Kokx drilled a two-run home run for the Ducks (53-50).

Doug Nikhazy (4-6) took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits, two walks and a wild pitch that allowed a run to score.

Sunday's result: Ducks rally to beat Patriots in series finale

The RubberDucks snapped a two-game losing streak with a 10-8 win over the Somerset Patriots in the finale of a six-game series Sunday at Canal Park.

The Ducks (53-49) won four of the games in the series.

The Ducks built a 10-4 lead in the seventh inning when Connor Kokx stole home. It was Kokx's 19th stolen base of the season and third run of the game.

The Ducks maintained that six-run advantage until the ninth inning, when the Patriots put four runs on the board off Jordan Jones, Akron's sixth reliever of the game. Franco Aleman then came on to get the final out of the game for his third save.

Erik Sabrowski (3-0) came on in the fourth inning in relief of Ducks starter Ross Carver, who walked four, gave up four hits and departed with the Patriots leading 3-1.

The Ducks tied it in the fourth when Petey Halpin tripled in two runs, and he scored the go-ahead run when Milan Tolentino hit a line-drive single to center.

Bryce Ball's solo home run in the fifth, followed by four more runs in the sixth — keyed by Tolentino's RBI double — put the Ducks ahead 9-3.

Tolentino finished with two doubles, a single and three RBIs, while Halpin and Aaron Bracho each had two hits.

Saturday's result: Ducks blanked again in loss to Patriots

The RubberDucks managed just three hits and were shut out for the second consecutive night, this time in a 2-0 loss to Somerset at Canal Park on Saturday night.

Unlike Friday night, however, the Ducks pitching staff kept them in the game all night, preserving a 0-0 tie going into the ninth. Jasson Dominguez then doubled home two runs off Ducks reliever Jack Leftwich (4-5) to give the Patriots (60-39) the win.

Bryce Ball ripped a double while Aaron Bracho and Gabriel Rodriguez recorded singles for the only hits of the game for the Ducks (52-49).

Friday's result: Ducks limited to just 3 hits in shutout loss to Patriots

Visiting Somerset snapped Akron's three-game win streak with a 5-0 victory Friday night at Canal Park.

The RubberDucks managed just three hits off Patriots starter Richard Fitts (8-5) and none off reliever Ryan Anderson in his two innings.

Korey Holland singled and doubled for two of the Ducks' hits off Fitts.

Ducks starter Hunter Stanley (3-8) struck out nine in 4⅓ innings, but also walked five and gave up three hits and four earned runs. Matt Turner relieved Stanley in the fifth, allowing a solo home run and striking out four.

Game five in the six-game series is set for 7:05 p.m. Saturday.

Thursday's result: Ducks collect 13 hits in rout of Patriots

Six players had multiple hits to power the RubberDucks to an 8-2 win over the Somerset Patriots Thursday at Canal Park.

The top four hitters in the Ducks order — Petey Halpin, Aaron Bracho, Angel Martinez and Juan Brito — each had two hits as the Ducks outhit Somerset 13-5.

Bracho drew a walk and Martinez singled to put runners on first and second with nobody out in the first. Brito then tripled down the line in right field to score both and make it 2-0. The Ducks added two more runs in the second to give starter Tommy Mace a 4-0 lead to work with.

Mace(3-2) breezed through the Somerset lineup the first time through, only allowing one base runner on a walk in the second. The right-hander ran into some trouble in the fourth, allowing a run on a two-out double, but that was the only real opportunity the Patriots got against Mace, who allowed one run on four hits while striking out five in 5⅔ innings.

Jordan Jones followed with a scoreless 1⅓ innings with a strikeout. Davis Sharpe allowed a run in one inning, and Franco Aleman struck out one in a perfect ninth.

Michael Berglund kept the Ducks rolling in the fourth by doubling with one out. Two batters later, Halpin singled home Berglund before coming around to score on a single by Martinez to make it 6-1. Bracho then launched a two-run home run off the batter’s eye in the sixth to make it 8-1.

Bracho extended his hitting streak to 10 games and on-base streak to 12 and raised his batting average to .253. Brito extended his on-base streak to 20 games with a single and triple.

Wednesday's result: Ducks score early in 4-2 win over Patriots

The RubberDucks put up all the runs they'd need in the first two innings Wednesday night en route to a 4-2 win over the Somerset Patriots at Canal Park.

Aaron Bracho got the scoring started with a one-run double to score Petey Halpin in the first inning. Angel Martinez followed by reaching on throwing error to score Bracho before Gabriel Rodriguez grounded out to score Martinez.

Michael Berglund launched a solo home run in the second to cap the scoring for the Ducks (51-47).

Doug Nikhazy (4-5) provided five solid innings, giving up two runs on five hits and three walks. He struck out four to limit the damage and lowered his ERA to 3.31. Mason Hickman and Bradley Hanner locked down the final four scoreless innings of relief, combining for four strikeouts.

Tuesday's result: Ball, Halpin homer in 6-1 Ducks win

A six-run inning and dominant pitching led the RubberDucks to a 6-1 victory over the Somerset Patriots at Canal Park on Tuesday afternoon.

With neither team having scored a run going into the bottom of the fourth inning, Korey Holland finally put the Ducks (50-47) on the board with a single that scored Juan Brito. The next batter, Bryce Ball, launched a three-run home run before Petey Halpin drilled a two-run shot of his own to punctuate the big inning.

Four pitchers combined for a solid afternoon, namely reliever Ross Carver, who went four hitless innings and struck out seven. Erik Sabrowski (2-0) got the win with a clean inning of relief in the fourth.

Sunday's result: Ducks drop series finale 7-1

The RubberDucks recorded six hits and coaxed six walks, but couldn't string much together in a 7-1 loss at Erie on Sunday afternoon.

Nine runners were left stranded and the Ducks (49-47) went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position on the day. Jose Tena scored the lone run when Aaron Bracho singled him home in the fourth inning.

Will Dion (2-3) took the loss, giving up four runs on four hits and four walks in 3⅓ innings. He struck out three but his ERA rose to 3.80.

Saturday's result: Ducks catch fire in extras, win 9-2

After only scoring two runs in nine innings, the RubberDucks scored seven in the top of the 10th to beat the SeaWolves 9-2 in extra innings on Saturday night.

Designated hitter Bryce Ball drilled a grand slam in the 10th to spark the Ducks (49-46) to victory. Petey Halpin went 3-for-5 with a double, a run and an RBI. Aaron Bracho slapped two singles, scored once and drove in two.

On the hill, Davis Sharpe (7-3) earned the win, pitching a perfect final 1⅓ innings and striking out one. Jack Leftwich came on in relief to keep the Ducks in the game, firing four shutout innings and striking out three.

Friday's result: Ducks score twice in the ninth to win

Jose Tena homered to break a tie in the ninth and Aaron Bracho doubled in a run for insurance as the RubberDucks defeated the SeaWolves 5-3 on Friday night.

Gabriel Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch in the eighth to help the Ducks (48-46) tie the game at 3-3. Bracho was perfect on the night, going 5-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, one run and two RBIs. Juan Brito went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

Franco Aleman (2-0) stole the win with two perfect innings of relief, striking out two.

Wednesday's result: Early hole costs Ducks in loss

Erie scored early and often in a 7-5 victory over the visiting RubberDucks on Wednesday afternoon.

The SeaWolves scored two runs in the first, two in the second and one in the third off Ducks starter Ross Carver (1-3) and reliever Matt Turner to gain a 5-2 lead after three innings.

Angel Martinez continued his hot hitting, going 2-for-4 with a run-scoring double and a solo home run. Juan Brito also ripped a double, scoring one and coming around to score for the Ducks (46-46).

Tuesday's result: Cruz drives in five to down Ducks

Trei Cruz launched two home runs, one triple and drove in five to propel the SeaWolves to a 7-3 home win over the RubberDucks on Tuesday night.

RubberDucks starter Will Dion (2-2) had his first rough outing in awhile, giving up three runs on four hits and four walks in five innings. He struck out two but three of his four hits allowed were home runs.

Aaron Bracho and Petey Halpin each drilled solo home runs for the Ducks (46-45). Gabriel Rodriguez provided the third run with a double in the ninth inning to score Connor Kokx.

Sunday's result: Korey Holland, Petey Halpin lead Ducks over Flying Squirrels

Korey Holland and Petey Halpin each had three hits and combined to drive in five runs Sunday afternoon at Canal Park to help the RubberDucks post a 10-2 win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels and earn a split of a six-game series.

The Ducks wasted little time jumping out to an early lead. With two on and two out in the first inning, Juan Brito lifted a double over the left fielder’s head to score two runs. Holland then lined a single up the middle to score Brito and make it 3-0.

Akron added a run in the second when Jose Tena lined a single into the right-center gap to score Bryce Ball. Halpin launched a solo homer to center in the fourth inning to make it 5-1, and the Ducks broke the game wide open in the seventh inning when Holland doubled home two runs before scoring on Ball’s single.

Halpin then singled home Aaron Bracho to stretch the lead to 9-2 before Ball capped the scoring on a wild pitch.

Holland reach base in all five plate appearances, and Tena collected his team-high 15th stolen base.

Hunter Stanley started for the Ducks and retired five of the first six he faced while striking out four. Richmond got to Stanley for a run in the second on a double, a hit batter and back-to-back walks, but the right-hander settled in to get a groundout to avoid further damage.

Stanley finished with six strikeouts while allowing just the one run over four innings. Mason Hickman (4-3) allowed one run over 2⅓ innings while striking out three. Matt Turner retired the only two he faced, and Davis Sharpe tossed two scoreless innings to finish the game.

Saturday's result: Ducks lose extra innings heartbreaker

Johnathan Rodriguez homered in the ninth to send the game to extra innings and again in the 11th but it was not enough as the RubberDucks fell 6-5 in 11 innings on Saturday.

Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with his 17th and 18th homers of the year and three RBI to lead the Ducks (45-44). Angel Martinez also launched a two-run home run in the ninth, his eighth of the season.

Trey Benton (1-2) was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs in the 11th inning.

Friday's result: Angel Martinez homer helps hold off Flying Squirrels

In a Negro League throwback, the RubberDucks beat the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-3 at Canal Park Friday night to even the six-game series in Akron at two games apiece.

Akron looked to add on to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Connor Kokx doubled to open the inning. After a strikeout and flyout, Kokx moved to third base with two outs. Angel Martinez then lined a two-run home run into the Cutwater Tiki Terrace to stretch the Akron lead to 5-0. It was Martinez's seventh homer of the year.

Doug Nikhazy (3-5) got the start for the Ducks and was dominant by striking out two in a perfect first. The left-hander did not allow a hit until the third and limited Richmond to no base runners until the fifth. The Squirrels loaded the bases with one out before Nikhazy got a flyout and strikeout to end his night with five shutout innings while striking out six. Mason Hickman tossed a scoreless inning with a strikeout. Ross Carver then followed with a 1⅔ innings of relief by allowing three runs and striking out three. Franco Aleman struck out three over a scoreless inning and a third to pick up his second save for the Ducks.

Martinez had two hits, two runs and RBI. Johnathan Rodriguez and Juan Brito also tallied two hits.

Thursday's result: Flying Squirrels win rain-shortened game

Bad weather in the Akron area on Thursday night and two runs in the fifth inning allowed and the Richmond Flying Squirrels earn a 3-2 win in a rain-shortened game over the RubberDucks at Canal Park.

Richmond took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a single off Ducks starter Tanner Burns. In the bottom of the inning Johnathan Rodriguez hit his 16th home run with Petey Halpin on to put the Ducks in front 2-1.

After three scoreless innings, Richmond went up 3-2 on three singles and a sacrifice fly. Both runs came off Matt Turner who relieved Burns in the fourth inning. Richmond starter Carson Seymour got the first two outs of the bottom of the fifth before Raymond Burgos came on in relief for the final out of the fifth before the game was suspended. Burgos threw four pitches and earned the win since Seymour did not go five full innings. He is now 6-2. Turner was tagged with the loss for the Ducks and is now 0-1.

Wednesday's result: Johnathan Rodriguez powers RubberDucks to win

Johnathan Rodriguez drove in two runs on a first-inning single and the RubberDucks pitching staff held on for a 2-1 victory on Wednesday at Canal Park.

Rodriguez plated Petey Halpin and Jose Tena to provide the only offense for the Ducks (44-42). Juan Brito and Michael Berglund were the only others to get hits.

RubberDucks starter Will Dion recorded his fourth straight quality start and ran his scoreless streak to 12 consecutive innings in improving his record to 2-1. He tossed six shutout innings, giving up two hits and one walk. He struck out seven and lowered his ERA to 2.95. Franco Aleman locked down his first save with 1⅓ scoreless innings and three strikeouts.

Tuesday's result: Flying Squirrels crush Ducks in series opener

The Flying Squirrels could not be stopped Tuesday afternoon, hitting four home runs in a 17-8 rout of the RubberDucks in the series-opener at Canal Park.

The Flying Squirrels (43-42) scored seven runs in the second inning, five in the third and two in the fourth to build a 14-0 lead.

Ducks starter Hunter Stanley (3-7) was hammered for 11 runs (seven earned) on six hits and four walks in 2⅓ innings. Three of the hits he allowed were home runs.

Jose Tena had two hits and Juan Brito hit his sixth home run of the season, a three-run blast in the sixth, for the Ducks (43-42).

Sunday's result: Rhodes gives Baysox walk-off win over Ducks

John Rhodes slapped his second run-scoring single of the game in the bottom of the ninth to help the Baysox steal a 6-5 walk-off victory over the RubberDucks Sunday.

After Bowie scored two runs to tie it at 2-2 in the sixth, the Ducks (43-41) answered with three runs on three singles by Angel Martinez, Johnathan Rodriguez and Juan Brito to make it 5-2. However, the Baysox tied it right back up in the home half before Rhodes' heroics in the ninth.

Mason Hickman was charged with a blown save before Trey Benton (1-1) took the loss in the ninth.

Saturday's result: Cook's home run beats Ducks 1-0

One solo home run from leadoff batter Billy Cook in the first inning was all the Baysox needed in a 1-0 win over the RubberDucks at Prince George's Stadium on Saturday.

Doug Nikhazy (2-5) was tagged with the tough-luck loss, allowing the solo shot over four innings, walking four and striking out three.

Jose Tena provided the lone hit for the Ducks (43-40) in the sixth inning with a single to left field. He also coaxed two of the Ducks' five walks.

Friday's result: Home runs abound in 8-6 Ducks victory

The Akron RubberDucks opened the second half of the season after the All-Star break with Friday's game at Bowie, Md. The Baysox hit four home runs, including three by John Rhodes, but still fell to the Ducks 8-6.

The game began late due to a 68-minute rain delay. Bowie took a 3-run lead in the bottom of the first inning including the first of Rhodes three solo homers. Akron scored one in the second which Bowie matched with a run in the bottom of the inning. Akron tied Bowie 4-4 in the top of the third with a 3-run inning keyed by Juan Brito's 2-run homer to center. Rhodes put the Baysox up 5-4 in the bottom of the third with a solo home run, which was his seventh of the season.

The see-saw affair saw Akron tie the game 5-5 when Johnathan Rodriguez hit his 15th home run in the top of the fifth. The Ducks took a 6-5 lead in the next inning when Angel Martinez drove in Connor Kokx on a single to right field. Later in the sixth inning, Rodriguez plated Petey Halpin with a infield ground out.

Rhodes' third home run in the seventh cut Akron's lead to 7-6. But, in the top of the ninth, the Ducks put their final run on the scoreboard when Aaron Bracho hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Brito.

The late comeback allowed Tanner Burns (3-3) to win his third game this season as he came on in relief of starter Ross Carver in the third inning. Franco Aleman and Bradley Hanner closed out the win with 2-2/3 innings of combined scoreless relief. Hanner picked up his sixth save with his ninth inning work.
