Akron basketball’s March Madness opponent is Creighton to open 2024 NCAA Tournament bracket

The University of Akron men's basketball team’s return to the NCAA Tournament will pit the Zips against a Big East power in the first round.

Akron was given a No. 14 seed in the Midwest Region by the NCAA Selection Committee and a first-round game against No. 3 Creighton. The game will be played at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Pittsburgh. TNT will televise it.

This is the Zips' sixth trip to the NCAA Tournament and first since 2022, when they lost in the first round to UCLA. They have never won an NCAA Tournament game. Creighton is in the tournament for the sixth straight season and 25th time overall, reaching the Elite Eight a year ago.

Akron earned the Mid-American Conference's automatic bid by winning the MAC Tournament, defeating archrival Kent State in the title game.

It was the Zips' fifth NCAA bid via winning the MAC Tournament title, with all five coming since 2009. They earned their first bid, back in 1986, by winning the OVC Tournament championship with Bob Huggins as their coach.
