Airport, Huron, Dundee, Ida, Whiteford post boys basketball wins

MILAN – Airport’s boys basketball team delivered one of its most complete performances of the season in rolling over Milan 76-36 Tuesday.

The Jets led 42-15 at halftime and never looked back.

“ Our guys played with excellent effort and took care of the basketball with only 11 turnovers,” Airport coach Jason Ruhlig said. “I was proud of our effort as a team today with 10 guys in the scoring column.”

Colin Nowak led the balanced scoring attack with 17 points while Brett Moore added 15 and Noah Cook 10. Cooper Nye collected 9 rebounds for the 5-5 Jets.

Jaxen Wourman’s 9 points topped 2-8 Milan.

“We continue to struggle to defend,” Milan coach Bobby Green said. “The kids are committed improving and that has been a positive thing.”

Huron 62, Jefferson 44

NEW BOSTON – New Boston Huron didn’t show any signs of rust in its first game since Dec. 29.

“It was important for us to come out of a long break with high energy and tough defense and we did that from the start,” Huron coach Ted Tackett said.

Nine players scored for 5-3 Huron led by Kyle Kantola with 15 points, Alex Tejeda-Walker with a career-high 12 and Chad Martin with 10.

Ben Merkel scored 9 points to lead Jefferson (6-3).

Huron won the junior varsity game 65-27.

Dundee 59, Hudson 41

DUNDEE – Dundee was able to pull away in the second half to improve to 10-1.

“It was a very good defensive effort,” Dundee coach Jay Haselschwerdt said. “When they got close, we made some plays in the fourth quarter.”

Braiden Whitaker led the Vikings with 19 points and Ethan Layton tossed in 13.

Whiteford 83, Morenci 43

OTTAWA LAKE – Whiteford exploded for 83 points to put an end to a two-game losing skid.

The Bobcats got 22 points from Lincoln Joerin and 16 from Hunter DeBarr. Josh Hill added 11 points for the 8-4 Bobcats, who remained tied atop the TCC with Lenawee Christian and Britton Deerfield.

Ida 41, Adrian Madison 38

ADRIAN – Ida used defense to run its record to 9-1.

“We came out of the blocks a little slow but held Madison to 7 points in the first half,” Ida coach Jared Karner said.

Owen Snyder hit a 3-pointer to tie the game in the fourth quarter, then the Blue Streaks hit clutch free throws down the stretch.

AJ Schrader led the Blue Streaks with 19 points.

Ann Arbor Huron 60, Monroe 33

ANN ARBOR – Ann Arbor Huron showed why it is expected to win the Southeastern Conference title.

“We actually played better than the score indicates,” Monroe coach Larry Middleton said. “They just out matched us with their size and athleticism.”

Lucis Rzepa topped the 2-6 Trojans with 7 points.

Ann Arbor Skyline 77, Bedford 44

ANN ARBOR – “This is one of the most frustrating games I’ve been a part of as a coach,” Bedford coach Jordan Bollin said.

The Mules trailed by just 10 points at halftime.

Ish Hakki and Jace Williams scored 9 points each for the 1-7 Mules.

Lenawee Christian 55, Erie Mason 49

ERIE – Erie Mason held Lenawee Christian to a season-low for points.

“We couldn’t quite overcome the free throw and rebounding differential,” Erie Mason coach Kevin Skaggs said.

The Eagles cut Lenawee Christian’s lead to 50-47 in the fourth quarter.

Logan Goodin and Xavier Wise each notched 17 points and 9 rebounds for 1-7 Mason. Karter Stubleski led the defense and hit a trio of 3-pointers off the bench.

David Sweeney scored 20 points and Logan Doom 10 to lead Mason’s junior varisty to a 53-46 victory.
