Ida's girls basketball uses defense to topple LCAA leaders

IDA – Ida managed just 35 points Tuesday night against an 8-1 Adrian Madison team that came into game tied for first place in the Lenawee County Athletic Association.

That wouldn’t seem like a good formula for the Blue Streaks, but their defense made it work for a 35-31 victory.

“After last week’s embarrassing loss to Blissfield we made a conscious effort to step up our defensive game,” Ida coach Tim Leonard said. “We did a much better job of not giving Madison uncontested looks at the basket.

“Our offensive game and our free throws still need work but it was nice to see the hard work on the defensive end.”

Jessica Scrader scored 12 points to lead the 5-3 Blue Streaks.

Emily Lambert scored 11 points for Ida in a 40-27 junior varsity loss.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Monroe snaps skid

MONORE – Monroe snapped a five-game losing streak by shutting down Ann Arbor Huron 43-26 Tuesday.

“Our girls played very hard and did some good things tonight,” Monroe coach Trent Moody said. “We go through spurts where we can score in bunches and then where we might not score for four minutes. Something we are trying to eliminate and we believe we can fix that. We are very very close to kicking it up a notch on offense.”

Eight of Monroe’s 11 players scored led by Sophia Bussell led with 18 points 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Alana Aulph and Zoe Leach also played well for the 4-5 Trojans.

Bedford routs Skyline

TEMPERANCE – Payton Pudlowski scored 20 points and Victoria Gray 17 as Bedford rolled over Ann Arbor Skyline 67-33 Tuesday.

The Mules led 22-8 after one period, 35-14 at halftime and 51-28 after three.

It was the fourth straight victory for Bedford (4-1).

Boggs his career best

TAYLOR – Anna Boggs, who hit a career-high 11 points Monday, topped that with 17 Tuesday as Jefferson cruised past Taylor 47-21 Tuesday.

Grace Jones added 12 points for the 4-5 Bears.

Offense fails Dundee

HUDSON – Dundee trailed just 21-19 at halftime, but managed only 2 points in the third quarter and fell 40-39 to Hudson Tuesday night.

“The effort was there, but our shots were not falling tonight,” Dundee coach Jay Briggs said of his 3-4 team.

Ellie Salenbien led the Vikings with 9 points, including 7 in the fourth quarter.

Whiteford stumbles

MORENCI – Whiteford could not recover after scoring just 9 points in the first half and fell 42-27 to Morenci Tuesday night.

“We didn’t match their effort on the defensive end in the first half and dug too big of a hole to climb out of,” Whiteford coach Nick Brillhart said.

Emily Hill led the 4-4 Bobcats with 15 points.

Mason loses marathon

ADRIAN – Erie Mason dropped a 56-48 quadruple-overtime heartbreaker to Lenawee Christian Tuesday night.

“I was incredibly proud of this team and their effort tonight,” Mason coach Josh Sweigert said. “We went out to focus on our defense and did a great job forcing tough shots.”

Freshman Zoie Stubleski hit a shot with under 10 seconds remaining in the third overtime to keep the Eagles alive.

Bailey Meiring paced 2-6 Mason with 13 points and 4 steals. Aubrey Iocoangeli, Zoie Stubleski and Mackenna Gallaher also played well.

PREP SWIMMING

Bylow hits three cuts

DUNDEE – Drew Bylow hit a trio of state-qualifying times in leading Dundee to wins over Woodhaven 94-91 and Flat Rock 125-47 Tuesday.

He made it individually in winning the individual medley and 500-yard freestyle and swam with Jack Brunner, TK Westbrook and Dallas Bensch as the medley relay qualified for state.

Westbrook won the backstroke and 200 freestyle.

Other winners for the Vikings were Michael Gerweck (50 freestyle), Bensch (100 freestyle), Brunner (breaststroke) and the 200 relay of Westbrook, Bensch, Brunner and Gerweck.

Flat Rock fell 131-45 to Woodhaven. Adam Brodie was second in the backstroke and third in the 100 for the Rams, Jacob Stanislawski second in the butterfly and fourth in the individual medley and Tanner Vaughn second in the 500.

PREP WRESTLING

Bears roll to two wins

FLAT ROCK – Jefferson, ranked No. 5 in Division 2, had no trouble with a pair of Huron League foes Tuesday. The Bears beat Flat Rock and St. Mary Catholic Central by identical 78-6 scores.

Joe Peer (106), Daniel Allen (112), Tyler Vanderpool (120), Issac Masserant (132), Ryder Mulherine (138), Karson Petit (144), Carter Simota (157), Martre Pearson (165), Malachi Pribyl (175), Gabe Hall (190), Daniel Phipps (215) and Anthony Cousino (275) all won twice for Jefferson.

Wyatt Mack (150) was 2-0 for Flat Rock, which gave Riverview a 52-30 battle despite five voids.
