Agua Dulce, John Paul II clash; plus updated Corpus Christi football power rankings

Another week of massive open dates is upon us as six-teams district take a mid-season break. But for most of the area's largest schools, district play is in full swing. Agua Dulce travels to Corpus Christi for an interesting non-district battle with John Paul II as both try to hit their stride ahead of district competition.

GAME OF THE WEEK

Agua Dulce at John Paul II

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Bishop Carmody Field

Records: Agua Dulce 3-2, John Paul II 2-2

Last week: Agua Dulce 51, Riviera 8; John Paul II at Center Point (ccd.)

What to know — Both teams are hoping to round into form as non-district play nears its end. Agua Dulce is in its first full year under Jason Calvez, matching up with John Paul II's first-year coach Roland Ramirez, a longtime area assistant, most recently at Odem. The Longhorns have looked explosive at times averaging 33 points a game. The Centurions are coming off their most impressive showing of the season, a 33-8 win against Progreso two weeks ago before last week's game was canceled.
