Aggie Sophomore Shemar Turner named “Rising Star” for 2022

The Texas A&M football program put together the #8 recruiting class in the country in 2021, and no player on that list was more highly ranked than Shemar Turner. Turner, a 5-star defensive lineman from DeSoto (TX) high school was the #22 prospect in the country, and the program’s lone 5-star signee in 2021.

In his freshman year, Turner saw limited snaps in 8 games, and totaled 14 tackles and 1.5 sacks, before being awarded the Defensive Top Newcomer award and the Freshman Aggie Award for Strength and Conditioning.

Now heading into the 2022 season, 247 Sports compiled a list of 22 rising stars to watch, and Turner’s name is near the top, at #3.

Shemar Turner was a five-star prospect in the 2021 class and got valuable time in the defensive line rotation for the Aggies last season. Five Texas A&M pass rushers participated in the NFL Combine earlier this year, which means there are several spots opening up within the two-deep. And after a dominant spring practice for Turner, he’s one of the guys who will have a vital role in Texas A&M’s pass rush. He moves well for his size and is a terror to block in 1-on-1 situation. GigEm247’s Brian Perroni says Turner can play either end or tackle and the Aggies will use him in a number of ways, similar to how they did so with DeMarvin Leal.

The Aggies, and new defensive coordinator DJ Durkin will certainly be depending on a major impact from their super sophomore as the seek to continue the reemergence of the Wrecking Crew defense.
