Admiral Schofield kicks off post-Tennessee career by throwing shade at his old coach

Admiral Schofield’s career at Tennessee is over and by most standards, it was a pretty good one. During the Illinois native’s four years in Knoxville, the Volunteers improved their win total each year all the way up to a 31-6 record this season. They even reached No. 1 in the AP Poll at one point.

Grant Williams was the top dog in Tennessee’s resurgence, but it’s hard to see the team reaching such highs without Schofield’s contributions. That run ended Thursday in a Sweet Sixteen overtime thriller against Purdue.

Now, Schofield will turn his attention to the NBA draft, but he also decided to raise some eyebrows Friday night with a quote tweet of San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich going berserk on a ref.

That tweet is undoubtedly a shot at Tennessee’s own head coach, Rick Barnes. Despite originally committing to Donnie Tyndall at Tennessee, the only head coach Schofield has known with the Volunteers is Barnes.

Even though he has overseen Tennessee’s rise, Barnes has a reputation for being somewhat passive on the sidelines, and it appears Schofield is now showing that he had a problem with that when it came to pushing refs. A bizarre decision from Barnes also arguably cost Tennessee its best chance at advancing over Purdue, which might still hold some sting for the Volunteers players.

Whether or not that’s a fair criticism from Schofield, it’s typically not the best look to immediately air grievances on your way out of a program. At the very least, it’ll be something to talk about during draft interviews with teams.
