Ada wrestlers pin Plainview on Senior Night

Jan. 27—Leave it to seniors Jagger Caldwell and Cord Coffee to put the exclamation point on Ada's 48-36 win over Plainview on Senior Night inside the Cougar Activity Center.

Caldwell — who was officially a state qualifier Cougar wrestler a year ago but is now being borrowed as a co-op wrestler from Allen High School for his senior campaign — turned a 9-1 lead over Rye Blackwood of Plainview into a second-period pin at the 46.8 mark of their 175-pound match. That snapped a 30-30 tie and gave the Cougars the lead for good.

One match later, Coffee pinned Devyn Anderson less than a minute into their 215-pound match, much to the delight of the Cougar Activity Center crowd to seal Ada's victory.

"I told these guys I wanted to send these seniors out with a big night and I think that was accomplished," Ada head coach Kyle Bohannon told The Ada News following the dual.

"We had a lot of guys wrestle big matches for us. Everybody takes wrestling as an individual sport, but you line up and sit on that bench with your teammates and we go out there and put points on that scoreboard together," he continued. " That's what we did tonight to send these seniors out with a win over a good, well-coached Plainview team."

BOYS

Ada 48, Plainview 36

With the boys' Class 5A Regional less than a month out (Feb. 16-17), Bohannon said his club is trending in the right direction.

"We just had this conversation. What I always tell people — the way my dad always taught me was 'It's not the way you start the race, it's the way you finish the race.' I've seen an upward progression from my guys," he said. "We want to peak at the right time. You don't want to peak too early. We want to peak 19 days from now when we head to regionals."

Ada junior Kaden Laviell got the first win of the night for the home team, pinning Axel Ortega at the 30.4 mark of the first period with the 113-pound match tied at 3-3.

Ada got back-to-back pinfall victories by a pair of freshmen later in the dual.

Jace Davis pinned Bryce Smith of Plainview at the 1:40 mark of the third period in the 126-pound match. and Ryan Gaches recorded a quick pin of PHS foe Hunter Lee at the 1:08 mark of the opening frame. That put Ada ahead 18-12 on the scoreboard.

With the Cougars trailing 24-18, sophomore Lane Haines got a huge pinfall victory over Matthew Chapo of Plainview in the 150-pound match. Things were all tied up at 5-5 after Haines secured a takedown and shortly after he got the pin at the 58.4 m mark of the second period. That victory knotted the match at 24-24 and set up the big finish by the Cougars.

GIRLS

Ada 2, Plainview 1

Ada and Plainview wrestled just two actual matches in the girls' portion of the dual. Ada's Makenna Howell led 5-1 before pinning Reilly Stewart with just 11.5 seconds left in the opening period.

At 120 pounds, Plainview's Jolie Thomas was able to pin Reilly Vietzke of Ada at the 18.6 mark of the opening frame.

EllaBabe Fisher got a forfeit at 105 pounds. Fisher is a junior age-wise but plans to graduate early in May.

The Ada boys and girls wrestling squads are competing at the Midwestern Conference Tournament that began on Friday and continues today at the Firelake Arena in Shawnee. Ada then heads to the Glenpool Tournament on Feb. 2-3.
