Aberdeen Roncalli's Claire Crawford leads area golfers with sixth-place finish
RAPID CITY — St. Thomas More freshman Rylan Horning captured the individual title and Sioux Falls Christian nailed down its third-straight team championship in the state Class A girls golf tournament that concluded Tuesday at Meadowbrook Golf Course.
After back-to-back fourth-place finishes the last two years, Horning opened play Tuesday in second place but only one shot behind Aberdeen Roncalli junior Claire Crawford. Horning took over with the best round of the day, a 2-over 74 and won by six shots. She finished with a two-day total of 12-over 156.
Defending champion Olivia Sorlie of Canton also surged on Day 2. After opening with an 85, she followed with a 5-over 77 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 162. That was good enough for second place.
Dakota Valley seventh-grader Katie Betsworth (84-80—164), Vermillion junior Stephanie Carr (83-85—168), Sioux Falls Christian junior Tori Peterson (83-87—170) and Crawford (81-90—171) rounded out the top six.
Sioux Falls Christian won the team title with a 687 total, winning by 12 shots over Vermillion (695). Claire Lamfers (seventh), Ceceila VanDenTop (ninth), Aubrie Van Beek (17th) and Chloe Attema (17th) also medaled for Christian.
The top six teams and 25 individuals were honored.
Carley Guthmiller of Groton Area tied for 12th with a 175 (90-85). Roncalli finished eighth (791) and Groton Area 12th (831) in the team standings. Complete results are posted on www.thepublicopinion.com.
