Aaron Rodgers officially has torn Achilles tendon, lost for season

Confirmation came Tuesday morning what New York Jets officials feared Monday night, that Aaron Rodgers has suffered a torn Achilles tendon and will be lost for the season. ESPN's Adam Schefter said "officially" it meant Rodgers would not be back in 2023 and it remained unclear if Rodgers' career was also finished.

Rodgers, the biggest story of the NFL offseason after he was traded from the Packers to the Jets, played just four snaps and did not complete a pass in the opener against the Bills on Sept. 11 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. He was sacked by Bills pass rusher Leonard Floyd ― a familiar face to Rodgers with Floyd spending four seasons as a member of the Chicago Bears ― and after getting to his feet, sat down on the turf as trainers approached.

The Packers swapped first-round draft picks with the Jets as part of the deal and received No. 42 and No. 207 in the 2023 draft (while surrendering pick No. 170), as well as a conditional 2024 draft pick. That pick would have been New York's first-rounder if Rodgers had played 65% of his team's snaps this season; it will now revert to the Jets' second-rounder.

Green Bay drafted Lukas Van Ness in the first round with the No. 13 pick (the Jets took Waukesha native Will McDonald with the No. 15 pick that originally belonged to Green Bay), and the Packers used the No. 42 pick on tight end Luke Musgrave. The 207th pick was used on kicker Anders Carlson.

Rodgers, who will turn 40 in December, has endured a number of major injuries during his time with Green Bay but has never played in fewer than seven games in a season since becoming the Packers' full-time starter in 2008. He was limited to nine games in 2013 and seven in 2017.

The future Hall of Famer has won four NFL Most Valuable Player awards and made 10 Pro Bowls in his Packers career.
