76ers' Jimmy Butler corrects his coach: 'My name isn't James'

Jimmy Butler has always been Jimmy Butler — nothing more, nothing less and nothing different.

The 29-year-old’s radiant personality and impressive ability on the court have carved out quite the NBA career for him since going 30th overall to the Chicago Bulls in the 2011 draft.

The last few years especially have resulted in the emergence of a Jimmy Butler that is much more mature and focused on the process necessary to help his team succeed.

The refinement of his character hasn’t changed his name though.

Following a 94-89 win for the Philadelphia 76ers over the Toronto Raptors in Game 2 of their second-round Eastern Conference playoff series on Monday night, 76ers head coach Brett Brown spoke to the media about Butler’s performance.

After putting up a team-high 30 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, Brown only had glowing things to say about his maturity. In fact, he felt that Butler’s play was so developed and complete that he referred to him by a different, more sophisticated first name.

“This was James Butler,” said Brown following the game. “Like, that was the adult in the gym.”

While he likely enjoyed the praise, Butler made it very clear when it was his turn to address the cameras that ‘James’ isn’t his name.

“My name isn’t James,” he said to some laughs. “Literally, it’s Jimmy.”

Whatever you want to call him, Butler and his 76ers return to Philadelphia after splitting the first two games of the series at Scotiabank Arena.
