Bedford's rules Sheriff's Invitational for first time since 2019

MONROE – The trophy is going back to Temperance.

Bedford’s wrestling team took first place in Saturday’s Monroe County Sheriff’s Invitational at the Jefferson Recreation Center, capturing the crown for the first time since 2019.

“It’s been a couple of years,” Bedford coach Kevin Vogel said. “The kids showed improvement. We’re starting to see what we do in the (practice) room transfer onto the mat.”

“It feels good,” said Bedford junior Noah Benore, who won the 144-pound championship. “We’ve been working hard.”

The elephant that wasn’t in the room was Dundee.

The state powerhouse decided to send it’s starting lineup to another tournament Saturday. The Viking B team posted an impressive fourth-place finish, but it took some of the luster off the Sheriff’s without Dundee’s best there.

“We can only wrestle who is here,” Vogel said. “It’s their decision.”

Said Jefferson coach Ryan Nadeau, “Their B team is as good as most people’s first team. I understand. They need to get the best competition they can, but we’d like to have them here.”

Other coaches were raving about the third-place showing by Huron, but coach Logan Ritchie always is striving for more.

“Overall we did pretty well,” he said. “There were some tough teams here, but we have high expectations. Even if we won it, I would find things we need to work on.”
