49ers practice participation report: George Kittle limited in 1st practice before Week 1

The 49ers on Wednesday had their first regular season practice of the year, which means their first practice participation report of the year was due after the session.

There weren’t any major surprises in the report and the only absences weren’t injury-related.

One omission is defensive end Nick Bosa, who agreed to a contract extension just before the session and did not participate.

Here’s the full report from Wednesday:

C Jon Feliciano (illness)
LT Trent Williams (not injury related – resting player)

Nothing to worry about here, although if for some reason Feliciano can’t play Sunday it would leave the 49ers woefully thin on the offensive line.

Limited participation

LB Oren Burks (knee)
S Tashaun Gipson (back)
S Talanoa Hufanga (knee)
TE George Kittle (groin)
RB Jordan Mason (foot)
WR Ray-Ray McCloud (wrist)
K Jake Moody (right quadricep)

All of these players were dealing with ailments to close the preseason so limited work on the first practice of the year is more likely good news than bad. McCloud’s return is especially good news since he broke his wrist early in the preseason and looked like he may not return until sometime around Week 4. A limited Wednesday session is a good sign of progress even if he isn’t good to play by Sunday.

Kittle getting a limited practice in is noteworthy since he spent Monday’s workout on a side field doing sprints. He’s dealing with a hip injury that may wind up holding him out of Week 1. However, his participation Wednesday is a good step in the direction of suiting up vs. the Steelers.

S George Odum (shoulder)
QB Brock Purdy (right elbow)

Odum had an AC joint sprain in his shoulder and shed his blue non-contact jersey Monday. Purdy has been working without any major restrictions since his return on Day 2 of training camp.
