4 matchups to watch for Commanders vs. Eagles

Carson Wentz and Jalen Hurts are the most-talked about players in Week 3’s matchup between the Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles. However, there are plenty of intriguing players on both sides of the ball for each team.

Outside of the quarterbacks, there are several high-profile matchups to watch. Each team features an outstanding defensive line and wide receivers.

Specific matchups will likely determine the outcome of this game. Which matchups favor the Eagles? How about the Commanders?

We’ve identified four matchups to watch in Sunday’s Week 3 battle.

No, Jack Del Rio isn’t suiting up again to play linebacker for the Commanders. However, Del Rio better have a plan for Hurts. Hurts was an issue for Washington in both games last season and the defensive personnel hasn’t changed much. Ideally, you make Hurts sit in the pocket and beat you with his arm. The more he’s on the move means trouble for the Commanders.

Terry McLaurin has dominated the Eagles in his three-year career. And he did that with little help. Now, he has a quarterback who can throw deep and two other wideout options who can also change games. Samuel has been reliable underneath for Washington, but it’s only a matter of time before he breaks loose. Dotson is the polished rookie, capable of beating you at every level.

The Eagles’ secondary got better after signing James Bradberry. Darius Slay had a game to remember on Monday night. McLaurin has found success against each of Philly’s top three corners. Winning this matchup is critical for the Commanders.

Eagles offensive line vs. Commanders defensive line

The Commanders need more from their defensive line. Jonathan Allen has been good and Daron Payne has been great. Defensive end Montez Sweat needs to do more. With Chase Young still out, Washington doesn’t have a dynamic pass rusher opposite of Sweat. The Eagles have one of the better offensive lines in the NFL, and if the Commanders can’t make Hurts’ life difficult Sunday, it will be a long day. Washington needs to win its share of battles here.

A.J. Brown is going to make his share of plays. There is no shutting him down. Washington needs to limit tight end Dallas Goedert. Goedert had success against the Commanders last season and Hurts like throwing to the tight end. Washington’s linebackers struggle in coverage, so don’t be surprised if we safeties Kam Curl, Bobby McCain and Darrick Forrest match up against Goedert.
