4 Bills players in line for contract extensions during the 2024 offseason

Again this offseason, Buffalo GM Brandon Beane and the front office have their work cut out for them.

This year, in particular, we might see offseason player personnel decisions ranging from last year’s supplemental short-term free agency additions to what could prove to be another asset packing and NFL Draft board movement masterclass to go up and get cost-controlled impact talent.

The Bills are among the teams with favorable Super Bowl odds ahead of their 2024 NFL season, this before they settle their roster via free agency and the draft.

While a number of players on the Buffalo roster are free agents, others may be up for contract restructuring or extensions.

Those extensions could be beneficial to players and the team alike, in that inking those new deals could also mean creating needed salary cap space for free-agency and draft timeframes.

With that here are four Bills players who could be in line for a contract extension this offseason:

The name at the top of this list is one of the latest success stories in the Bills’ commitment to player development.

Soon-to-be 30-year-old offensive lineman Dion Dawkins took the next step at the pro level this past season for a breakout year, one that saw some of the best O-Line performances in HC Sean McDermott’s tenure.

Dawkins is signed through the end of next season and is a logical extension candidate to offer a pact through 2026. The new deal would eliminate the two void years on his current agreement and spread his money out a bit considering his current $16.61 million cap hit and $9.3 million base salary for 2024.

Speaking of the offensive line, C Mitch Morse is headed into the final year of his current deal and could stand to add some time in a new pact.

Eventually, the Bills brass will need to start thinking of life after Morse’s career as a starter, but in the short term, he is still playing at an effective and high level to justify a short extension as a logical move that can create cap space, much like the team did with S Micah Hyde in recent years.

Extending through 2025 with some void years through 2027 would keep Morse in the fold while opening up some cap flexibility.

Another signature BBB trade deadline addition, the 29-year-old Douglas is slated to hit free agency following the 2024 NFL season,

With Tre’Davious White’s recovery timeline from injury unknown and the immediate and consistent impact Douglas has had since joining the team, an extension would make sense.

Some preliminary restructuring could create around $6 million in savings to create the space to help facilitate the extension as well. The Bills could also offer a fully guaranteed roster bonus for the 2025 season which would give them flexibility to prorate the future years of a deal.

27-year-old Taron Johnson has seen his role increase in recent seasons and only has a year left on his current deal, making him another logical extension candidate.

He has a 2024 cap hit of $12.41 million with a $6.45 million base salary and an extension could create more cap space with a new deal.
