Here are 3 Sioux Falls Roosevelt players you should know heading into the 2023 season

The official start of South Dakota high school football season is less than two months away, but teams are only two and a half weeks away from getting back on the gridiron for practice.

Most South Dakota teams are set to kick off the 2023 season Aug. 25.

Sioux Falls Roosevelt is coming off a 3-7 season in which they made it to the first round of the playoffs. This year, the Rough Riders are returning multiple offensive skill players at key positions who will have another year of experience under their belt.

Here are three Roosevelt players to keep an eye on this fall who will be looking to help their team make another playoff run.

Jaxsen Grevengoed

Position: Running back

Grade: Senior

Scouting Report: Grevengoed’s size and strength alone could cause problems for opposing defenses. At 5-foot-10, 195 pounds, he’s a wrecking ball of speed and force. When he rushes at opposing defenders he can force them on their back heel with brute force. The multisport athlete combines that strength with the speed and playmaking that had him leading Roosevelt in receiving yards for two years. He’s shown he can create something out of nothing with his quickness and footwork on the run.

Coach’s view: “Jaxsen Grevengoed has been our leading receiver for two seasons and was our leading rusher last year as well.  His combination of strength and speed makes him one of the best players to come from Roosevelt in a while.” – Kim Nelson

Tayden Nave was one of the team leaders in receiving yards and tackles for the Rough Riders last season.

Tayden Nave

Position: Linebacker/ Wide Receiver

Grade: Senior

Scouting Report: Nave is the definition of versatile. He plays both the defensive and offensive end for the Rough Riders, and is one of their top players on both sides of the ball.  He’s got the strength to pressure opposing quarterbacks at the line of scrimmage and the quickness and agility to be a threat as a wide receiver on offense. At 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, he’s a tough guy to knock down when he’s coming off the catch.

Coach’s view: “Tayden has been our leading tackler for two seasons and one of our leading receivers each of the last two seasons.  Tayden is a very versatile player and has been a three sport athlete for the Rough Riders!” – Kim Nelson

Jackson Brouwer

Position: Quarterback

Grade: Senior

Scouting Report: Now a senior with two years of starting QB experience, the Rough Riders will look to Brouwer to lead the offense and the good thing is he can handle pressure. At 6-foot-3, Brouwer has the size to see over the defense. That helps him make quick, decisive reads, even when the defense is rushing him. He can throw on target passes on the move just as well as when he throws from the pocket. He has the ability to make plays after scrambling and keeps calm through the pressure.

Coach’s view: “Jackson Brouwer has started at quarterback the past two seasons and has passed for over 3500 yards and 34 touchdowns during that time. He will be a crucial part of our offense again this season!  I expect great things from him this season!” – Kim Nelson
