247Sports releases spring practice bowl projections. Where is Penn State?
Penn State and a majority of college football programs are in the midst of spring football practices right now, but that hasn’t stopped 247Sporys from taking a stab at projecting where every team will be playing in the bowl season for the 2022 season. The Nittany Lions are looking to rebound from a mediocre 2021 season that ended with a loss to Arkansas in the Outback Bowl, which will have a new name beginning this upcoming season.
As currently projected by Brd Crawford of 247Sports, it doesn’t appear as though there are high expectations for a rebound season from Penn State. Judging by Crawford’s projection of Penn State facing Louisville in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, the 2022 season is looking to be one with some setbacks along the way.
The Big Ten’s bowl alignment agreement with the Duke’s Mayo Bowl is set to rotate sending a Big Ten team three times over a six-year period expiring in 2025, with the Las Vegas Bowl getting a Big Ten the other three years on an alternating basis. The Big Ten was represented in the Las Vegas Bowl last season by Wisconsin. Wisconsin also filled the Big Ten’s spot in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in 2020. So it would likely be time for the Big Ten to call on another school to fill the obligatory spot in Charlotte.
The bowl projections from 247Sports are clearly less optimistic about Penn State’s 2022 season than previous bowl projections released by Brett McMurphy of The Action Network. According to McMurphy’s way-too-early bowl projections (posted in late February), Penn State could be playing in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Day against the Florida Gators.
Penn State will wrap up spring football practices later this month with the annual Blue-White spring game on Saturday, April 23 in Beaver Stadium.
Penn State’s 2022 season begins on Thursday, September 1 at Purdue. The game will air on FOX.
