Germany top France in penalties, win 2024 U-17 World Cup: Tournament results, schedule
The first U-17 World Cup since 2019 hit Indonesia and delivered a fine final, as Germany overcame a blown two-goal lead, a red card, and missed chance to seal the shootout in a six-round penalty triumph in Indonesia.
Germany built a 2-0 lead through a Paris Brunner (Dortmund) penalty and Noah Darvich (Barcelona) marker, but France answered two minutes later through Saimon Bouabre (Monaco) to make it 2-1 in the 53rd minute.

But German midfielder Winners Osawe (Leipzig) was sent off in the 69th minute and France found a leveler from Mathis Amougou (Saint-Etienne) five minutes before the end of the 90 to force extra time.
Germany missed its first penalty, but France missed attempts three and four. That set Germany up with a chance to win it in round five, but the eventual winners did not convert the chance. One round later, Germany were champions.
It's a first U-17 World Cup for Germany, whose only other final appearance came in 1985 as West Germany. France was bidding to win a second U-17 tournament. Nigeria's the top all-time winner with five crowns to Brazil's four.
How did the U.S. do at the U-17 World Cup in Indonesia?
The Baby Yanks got off to a great start in the tournament, riding a brace from 15-year-old Nimfasha Berchimas to a 3-1 win over South Korea and then beating Burkina Faso 2-1 on Wednesday. But a 3-0 loss to France left them with a Round of 16 match versus Germany. A valiant effort came up short, late, as the Germans scored an 87th-minute decider to win 3-2 and they would go on to reach the final.
It was the 18th appearance for the U.S. U-17s, who got back to the business of knockout round play after a disappointing showing in 2019 saw them exit in the group stage. The Baby Yanks' best finish was a fourth-place run in 1999, but they failed to reach the knockout rounds in two of the previous three tournaments. The 2021 tournament in Peru was canceled as a result of the pandemic, and former Costa Rican international and ex-Chicago Fire star Gonzalo Segares led the U.S. U-17s into Group E with Burkina Faso, France, and South Korea.
England were flying early in the tournament but were stunned by Uzbekistan in the Round of 16, the same round that saw CONCACAF powers Mexico smashed by Mali who went all the way to the semifinals. The other two CONCACAF sides — Panama (0-2-1) and Canada (0-0-3) — failed to register a win and bowed out in the group stage.
Players to watch at the U-17 World Cup
Seventeen of the 21 players on Segares' roster are based in the United States, with Liverpool, Augsburg, Eintracht Frankfurt, and UE Cornelia also boasting representatives on the U.S. roster.
Keyrol Figueroa is a key piece for Segares' United States squad. The son of Honduran star Maynor Figueroa, Keyrol had four goals and three assists in 12 U-18 Premier League matches for Liverpool last season. He scored seven times at the CONCACAF U-18 Championship and has a goal in the win over Burkina Faso.
Nimfasha Berchimas, a Charlotte FC reserve and just 15 years old, has captured eyeballs after scoring in both games including a brace in the opening win over South Korea.
Staying in CONCACAF, Mexico's Fidel Barajas is earning regular minutes for Charleston Battery in the USL Championship and has appeared for the U.S. and Mexico U-17s.
Spain's Marc Guiu has already made his Barcelona first team debut and became the youngest debutant to score for the Blaugranas in La Liga. Similarly, Brazil's Rayan has debuted and scored for Vasco da Gama, while Assan Ouedraogo of Germany is playing for Schalke in 2.Bundesliga. Claudio Echeverri of Argentina — and River Plate — is one of the most in-demand teenagers in world football.
For England, Jayden Meghoma has been on a bench for Southampton and Sam Amo-Ameyaw has four appearances for Saints' first team, while Chelsea's Ishe Samuels-Smith is a high-ceiling prospect. Luton's Joe Johnson has appeared for the Hatters in this season's League Cup, while Chris Rigg has become a regular for Sunderland in the Championship. Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri made his first team debut last season.
