2022 Auburn football preview: Tight End

Auburn’s tight end room is one of the deepest on the roster and has several versatile players.

John Samuel Shenker is the unquestioned leader after catching 33 passes for 413 yards last season, both program records, but luke deal, tyler fromm, Brandon Frazier, and even true-freshman Micah Riley-Ducker bring something interesting to the position.

With the uncertainty at the quarterback and wide receiver positions, this group could be asked to do a lot but has the talent to do just that. Tight-end coach Brad Bedell has done a great job filling this room with players who have skill sets that complement each other.

John Samuel Shenker

He is coming off of a record-breaking season for Auburn and is now a leader of the team. Entering his sixth season he should once again be a reliable pass-catcher for the quarterback. He’s more than just a receiver though, he is capable of lining up at fullback or as a traditional tight end and is a good blocker. He has a chance to break more records this year and look for him to catch his first touchdown since 2019.

Luke Deal: He has been primarily used as a blocker in his time on the Plains but has become a better receiver each season. With Auburn’s expected emphasis on running the ball, he should see plenty of action as an extra blocker.

Tyler Fromm: Much like Deal, Fromm primarily served one role for the offense. However, his was as an extra receiver. Look for him to build on his eight receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown last season.

Brandon Frazier: With the departure of King, Frazier may be the most intriguing player at tight end. The 6-foot-7, 262-pounder is still looking to breakout. If he can take the next step it could be huge for a passing attack that needs a red zone target.

Micah Ducker Riley: The true freshman has plenty of potential and if this room was a little less crowded would likely challenge for playing time. He is a willing blocker and a talented receiver who may still earn a role despite the veterans ahead of him.
