2017 Raiders Free Agent Profile: LB Lorenzo Alexander

Lorenzo Alexander is the one that got away. After a one-year stint with the Raiders, the Bay Area product blossomed in Buffalo. A stand-up edge rusher for the Bills, Alexander tallied a career-high 12.5 sacks. Plus, he added 76 tackles and a pick last season.

“We did not see that in him or we wouldn’t have let Rex get him,” Raiders Head Coach Jack Del Rio

On March 9, Alexander can sign with any team come March 9. Under those circumstances, Oakland needs to bring him back home. A bargain for the Bills last year — Alexander made $885,000 on one-year pact — the price for the linebacker’s services no doubt multiplied exponentially. A one-year $2.5 million deal, similar to one Dwight Greenery signed with Atlanta, would be a good starting point. But a $5 million figure is what Alexander is likely to fetch on the open market. Spotrac values Alexander at a $6.5 million annual salary.

Consequently, it would be money well spent, both on the field and in the locker room. To this day, Alexander and QB Derek Carr remain close. As an illustration, the signal caller sent a signed jersey to Alexander. Alexander can provide not only a solid veteran presence, but another pass rushing option alongside Khalil Mack, Bruce Irvin and Aldon Smith. Alexander could become an invaluable mentor to No. 99.

Age (Alexander turns 34 at the end of May) and scheme fit (he flourished in the 3-4 alignment) are cause for concern. On the other hand, with John Pagano on board (a 3-4 specialist) and the Raiders using a 3-4 base later last season, Alexander is a fit.

“I’m a football player. I fit any scheme” Alexander noted.
