17 straight: Yuba College men's BB perfect in BVC with three games left

Feb. 15—Three of Yuba College's top sophomores paved the way for the men's basketball team's 17th straight victory Wednesday as the 49ers remained perfect in the Bay Valley Conference action with a 82-68 win over Mendocino on the Marysville campus.

Devon Malcolm led Yuba (23-2, 13-0 BVC) with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Majer Sullivan added 17 points and 13 rebounds. Demarreya Lewis-Cooper chipped in 15 points and seven assists for the 49ers, which travel to Pittsburg to take on No. 30 Los Medanos at 6 p.m. today (Friday) — the first of three remaining games left in the regular season. To date, Yuba leads the BVC over Los Medanos (18-7, 11-2) by two games.

The Yuba men and women end the regular season at home Thursday against Napa Valley College beginning with the women at 5:30 p.m.

Yuba is on the road Tuesday to take on Contra Costa in a doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m.

Yuba men No. 8 in state CCCMBCA poll

As of this week, Yuba stands at No. 8 in the California Community College Men's Basketball Coaches Association Poll, a spot below San Diego City College and one up on West Los Angeles. The top-3, this week, is unbeaten West Valley, Fullerton and City College of San Francisco, a team that Yuba beat in November.

However, as the CCCMBCA noted, Yuba's strength of schedule is not on par with the top-10 as evidenced by its RPI rating that ranks 13th in the state — eighth in Northern California — at .596.

RPI is a quantity used to rank teams based upon its record and strength of schedule.

Yuba's winning percentage index is top-4 in NorCal — No. 1 in the BVC — as of Feb. 5.

The NorCal Regional seed meeting is Feb. 25, with playoff brackets released for NorCal and SoCal shortly after, as noted by the California Community College Athletic Association.

Yuba women fall to Mendocino

The women were beaten 74-49 on Wednesday to fall to 1-24 overall and 0-12 in conference.
