So yesterday, after police found Javon Walker laying in the street after having been beaten and mugged, some rumors surfaced about how he may have gotten there. I opted not to pass them along here, as they were completely unsubstantiated and not totally believable.
The story went that Walker got in some kind of champagne-spraying contest with Floyd Mayweather and his pals (and Walker was photographed spraying some champagne), and afterwards, some members of Mayweather's crew beat him down in the street. Nuts, right?
Well, yes ... but no less nuts than the story Walker told himself. TheDirty.com has the following statement from Walker, which they claim to be first-hand, from Javon himself. Walker says the Mayweather story is false, which I believe, and then he tells this story:
“I was just back at my room and at about 5:30 in the morning I got a knock at the door. I opened it and 3 guys with guns were there. They cracked me in the head a few times, knocking me unconscious. They then robbed me of everything I had; my watch, money, everything! Somehow they got me to a car and dropped me off in the street. That’s what happened.”
Oooooookay. A gang of thieves came to your room, knocked you out, took your money, and then dragged your limp body through a hotel and dumped you in the street because ... wait, why would someone do that?
But hey, who am I to try to figure out the mind of a master criminal? Maybe for some guys, it's just really, really important to be known as an outdoor criminal, as opposed to an indoor criminal. Maybe there's some unwritten code among criminals that you do not rob people if they're minding their own business and sound asleep in their hotel room, like a good little Raider.
And as pointed out at PFT, there are surveillance cameras everywhere in Vegas. It seems unlikely that you could drag an unconscious and presumably bloody man through a hotel, and not have someone notice.
Anyway, the good news is that Walker's injuries don't seem serious enough to threaten his season. Unless thugs break into his dorm at Raiders' training camp, beat and rob him again, and then drive him off to a Wal-Mart parking lot somewhere. Could happen.
