News
comes out today that Steve
Smith, teammate of Plaxico Burress, had a gun pointed at his head on
November 25th in a robbery that took place inside his own gated community.
First things first: Smith is fine, and he played this weekend against the Redskins. He did lose a substantial amount of cash and jewelry, the amount of which is unknown. And no arrests have been made.
From there, of course, one wonders if this incident is what made Plaxico Burress feel like he needed to be strapped when he left his house on the night he ended up shooting himself in the thigh. Neither Smith or Burress have said so themselves, but one can't help but wonder.
Obviously, Smith and Burress spend a lot of time together, and have quite a bit in common, in terms of environment, stature, and social standing. If Smith is a high-profile enough guy to be targeted for a robbery, then Burress is even more so.
Maybe this changes some minds about Burress. Maybe some people hear this story and think, "Okay, maybe Plax does have reason to carry a gun."
I wouldn't be one of those people.
I'm just not convinced that having a gun makes you any safer. As evidence, I offer this: Steve Smith didn't have a gun, was robbed, and is walking around today, happy, healthy, and wealthy, though maybe slightly less wealthy than he was before. Plaxico Burress did have a gun, no one made any attempt to rob him, and today, he's got a bullet hole in his leg, is facing three-and-a-half years in prison, and potentially the end of his career.
So tell me, how did carrying a gun work out for Plax? Was he a lot safer?
To me, if the Smith incident influenced Plax to carry a gun, it's just another example of bad judgment on Plax's part. I feel terrible for Smith that he had to go through something like that, but in that situation, can we really say for sure that he's better off with a gun? I don't see any reason to believe that.

If you aren't willing to get a simple permit for a weapon, I have little pity for you.

These are two isolated incidents. Just because Smith didn't have a gun and is fine, and Burress had a gun and injured himself, does not condemn guns as being evil. Guns are completely safe when used correctly.

Plax and Steve are both looking out for each other.
Only thing I'm thinking is that Steve's jewelery must have been an heirloom or a keepsake from, say, a passed relative or parent or long-lost family member.

If you read between the lines on the charges he is being brought up on, then I've stated a potential truth in this matter. I'm looking forward to this trial simply because I want to see the truth brought out.

And YES, the gun issue is the core of this incident, not the ignorance of professional athletes. We all know that millionaires should hire drivers and bodyguards to shelter them from avoidable encounters but sadly some professional athletes choose stupidity over logic.
What is wrong with our society? Why does ANYONE other than a law enforcement agent or a licensed protector of others need a CONCEALED weapon? Answer: to hide a deadly weapon they have no business carrying. Concealed pistols were NEVER what the second amendment was about. It was not about an idiot out for a night of drinking on the town carrying a gun in his sweat pants in a city with the largest police force on the east coast. (Not to mention that Manhattan is arguably the safest borough of NYC) The amendment was about stopping a government from taking away all the power from its citizens and to keep foreign powers from attacking a defenseless new country. To keep a balance, it was deemed in 1791 that WHITE MALE citizens were allowed to own firearms as a last resort to a runaway political power refusing to listen to their vote. It was about public defense long before there was a huge standing army.
How can anyone in 2008 who compares USA gun use and murder statistics to other modern, western, civilized nations NOT see that gun laws need to be tightened in the USA? Um, newsflash, it's not 1791 and the only reason you are hiding a glock 40 in your pants is to harm others. You're not some farmer protecting his herd from wolves with a shotgun nor are you some threatened gunslinger in Silverado in the 1800's. To cling to the second AMENDMENT (amendment means a change) and act like it can't be further AMENDED is ignorance.
If you buy into Fox Fear News, then own a licensed gun and keep it at home as protection (public defense) in case you are attacked. DO NOT GO carrying that weapon around hidden in your pants looking for trouble. By the way, statistics say that a legally owned gun for protection is 15 times more likely to be used in an accidental shooting than it is for legitimate protection.

From all reports I've read, Pierce had no foreknowledge that Plax had a gun.
The group out partying was Pierce, Plax, another player (Bradshaw?), and PLAX'S WIFE. If you are going to do some dirty work, you don't bring the wife.
Besides, Plax had MONEY - if he needed someone offed, he'd pay a guy to do it and take the fall.
