Shutdown Corner - NFL

News comes out today that Steve Smith, teammate of Plaxico Burress, had a gun pointed at his head on November 25th in a robbery that took place inside his own gated community.

First things first: Smith is fine, and he played this weekend against the Redskins. He did lose a substantial amount of cash and jewelry, the amount of which is unknown. And no arrests have been made.

From there, of course, one wonders if this incident is what made Plaxico Burress feel like he needed to be strapped when he left his house on the night he ended up shooting himself in the thigh. Neither Smith or Burress have said so themselves, but one can't help but wonder.

Obviously, Smith and Burress spend a lot of time together, and have quite a bit in common, in terms of environment, stature, and social standing. If Smith is a high-profile enough guy to be targeted for a robbery, then Burress is even more so.

Maybe this changes some minds about Burress. Maybe some people hear this story and think, "Okay, maybe Plax does have reason to carry a gun."

I wouldn't be one of those people.

I'm just not convinced that having a gun makes you any safer. As evidence, I offer this: Steve Smith didn't have a gun, was robbed, and is walking around today, happy, healthy, and wealthy, though maybe slightly less wealthy than he was before. Plaxico Burress did have a gun, no one made any attempt to rob him, and today, he's got a bullet hole in his leg, is facing three-and-a-half years in prison, and potentially the end of his career.

So tell me, how did carrying a gun work out for Plax? Was he a lot safer?

To me, if the Smith incident influenced Plax to carry a gun, it's just another example of bad judgment on Plax's part. I feel terrible for Smith that he had to go through something like that, but in that situation, can we really say for sure that he's better off with a gun? I don't see any reason to believe that.

But i posted this yesterday as cirmcumstances in extenuation that will lead to a fine and not prison time. Here's some more of it. Antione Walker was robbed at gunpoint in his home with his family. he's never been the same. Javon Walker held Darrent Williams in his arms when he was murdered after a visit to a club. His assailant has finally be charged. Javon Walker has never been the same. To say today that Steve Smith is Ok is foolish.

I agree with sam on smith being "ok".he might be physically but he has got to be still "shook" up in the mind. also plax has a right to have a gun just like everyone else carrying right now but just not in a club. still hope newyork loses in playoffs.

Yeah, that's wild. Anyway, if you go back to your post of yesterday about his lawyer, you can pick up my prima facie case for Plaxico. with your earlier post that 3 years seems excessive, i think you could put my rudimentary lawyering together and i could maybe even get the Grand jury not to indict because he had a reason to be fearful. his action weren't really unreasonable giving that athletes have become targets all over the country.
so you're on the Grand Jury, i can i have your vote not to indict?

So what? If Smith had a gun as someone held one to his head, what was he going to do, pull it and get the robber to shoot him in the head? Eff that nonsense that carrying the gun would've helped him. The only that helped him was not having one in that situation, otherwise he'd be dead or on life support today.

would it have mattered if plax had been robbed and had a gun?? If it were slipping down his thigh, it shows he did not have it properly holstered and probably couldn't hit a cows a$$ from twenty feet with a shotgun. Get a bodyguard for your club excursions. One licensed to carry a gun and have your back.. Idiots...

If you're going to carry a gun, get a permit and learn how to use it. I'm not for or against guns but I think if you have one you need to accept all the responsibilities that come with them. It's a tool that serves a singular purpose, to kill in the event of danger (for some to kill at will).
If you aren't willing to get a simple permit for a weapon, I have little pity for you.

I agree with #8, how can you make light of how it feels to get robbed at gunpoint, the loss of not only a feeling of security but in faith in humanity, and then say callously that... 'look, see he's (steve smith is) fine.' The second amendment of the constitution of the United States gives every citizen the right to defend him or herself. The reason Plaxico probably let the license expire on his gun in May of this year is that he had faith in the law enforcement of the state of new york to protect him, a faith which was obviously shattered a few days earlier.

Obviously the moron doesn't know how to handle a gun. He's lucky someone DIDN'T try and boost him, otherwise he probably would have killed himself instead of just wounding his dumb ass self !

#6 Dave P and a few others need to learn how to read before making stupid comments. Read the article again SLOWLY and you will realize how lame your post is. MJD clearly states he doesnt agree with Burress carrying the gun based on the Smith situation. As far as those whining that Smith "isn't OK" because he was still robbed at gunpoint are missing the point that Smith is better off than Plax at this point. It's clear that MJD's point wasn't to diminish what Smith went through, but to point out that in using better judgement, Smith will fare better in the long run. I do agree that hiring a bodyguard who is LICENSED and TRAINED to carry and use a firearm would be exercising better judgment if in fact there is a threat to these athletes.

I agree with #11, MJD. You cannot say Steve Smith is "okay" after an incident like that. You did not get robbed at gunpoint last week. He did.
These are two isolated incidents. Just because Smith didn't have a gun and is fine, and Burress had a gun and injured himself, does not condemn guns as being evil. Guns are completely safe when used correctly.

They don't pat noone down at the clubs anymore?
Plax and Steve are both looking out for each other.
Only thing I'm thinking is that Steve's jewelery must have been an heirloom or a keepsake from, say, a passed relative or parent or long-lost family member.
    Stupid is as stupid does.

Plax brought an illeagal gun in place that had alcohol. Throw the man in the slammer. Plax knows the laws he has a chip on his shoulder and having a firearm to his side gives him even more of a chip.

If I understand it correctly, Plax (possibly with Pierce's assistance and/or compliance by the bar security) circumvented the bar's security to take the gun inside. He then shot himself while - as one witness claims - trying to remove the gun from his waistband. To me this signifies that something else entirely was going on. That is, Plax had a motive other than protection for bringing the gun and may have in fact been about to commit a much more serious crime then simply possession.
If you read between the lines on the charges he is being brought up on, then I've stated a potential truth in this matter. I'm looking forward to this trial simply because I want to see the truth brought out.

This incident is under the spotlight because it is a famous athlete injuring himself but the truth is that accidental gunshot wounds happen every day in the USA. In fact, accidental injuries with guns FAR outnumber people using a concealed weapon as life-saving protection. To think you will stop violence with violence is idiotic. "I will stop others from using guns and hurting people by carrying a gun." That sounds about as smart as bombing people into freedom and democracy. Ugh. Probably the same people who yell at their children to stop yelling.
And YES, the gun issue is the core of this incident, not the ignorance of professional athletes. We all know that millionaires should hire drivers and bodyguards to shelter them from avoidable encounters but sadly some professional athletes choose stupidity over logic.
What is wrong with our society? Why does ANYONE other than a law enforcement agent or a licensed protector of others need a CONCEALED weapon? Answer: to hide a deadly weapon they have no business carrying. Concealed pistols were NEVER what the second amendment was about. It was not about an idiot out for a night of drinking on the town carrying a gun in his sweat pants in a city with the largest police force on the east coast. (Not to mention that Manhattan is arguably the safest borough of NYC) The amendment was about stopping a government from taking away all the power from its citizens and to keep foreign powers from attacking a defenseless new country. To keep a balance, it was deemed in 1791 that WHITE MALE citizens were allowed to own firearms as a last resort to a runaway political power refusing to listen to their vote. It was about public defense long before there was a huge standing army.
How can anyone in 2008 who compares USA gun use and murder statistics to other modern, western, civilized nations NOT see that gun laws need to be tightened in the USA? Um, newsflash, it's not 1791 and the only reason you are hiding a glock 40 in your pants is to harm others. You're not some farmer protecting his herd from wolves with a shotgun nor are you some threatened gunslinger in Silverado in the 1800's. To cling to the second AMENDMENT (amendment means a change) and act like it can't be further AMENDED is ignorance.
If you buy into Fox Fear News, then own a licensed gun and keep it at home as protection (public defense) in case you are attacked. DO NOT GO carrying that weapon around hidden in your pants looking for trouble. By the way, statistics say that a legally owned gun for protection is 15 times more likely to be used in an accidental shooting than it is for legitimate protection.

This is getting as old as Pack It Up , allready. # 21 made a fine point, when You take ANY firearm in a place that serves alcohol it changes the whole context of the situation. Hire a bodyguard if You're that paranoid or better still stay away from the Dives alltogether.

Scott E - you should go meet those guys that think we hoaxed the Moon landings, I bet you'll have a lot in common.
From all reports I've read, Pierce had no foreknowledge that Plax had a gun.
The group out partying was Pierce, Plax, another player (Bradshaw?), and PLAX'S WIFE. If you are going to do some dirty work, you don't bring the wife.
Besides, Plax had MONEY - if he needed someone offed, he'd pay a guy to do it and take the fall.
